Mercs 2 has Bono under fire

Activists call on religious leaders to join petition asking U2 frontman to stop release of Pandemic's sandbox shooter set in Venezuela.

By Tim Surette, GameSpot

Posted Mar 21, 2007 7:49 pm GMT

Militaristic games set in contemporary times benefit greatly from incorporating as much realism as they can. Real-world weapons, vehicles, and tactics bring an air of authenticity that doesn't require risking life and limb for. However, add what many claim to be a plausible plot based on current events and the fictionalized "real world" hits a little too close to home for some.

One man come he to justify...

The Venezuelan Solidarity Network is asking for help to stop production of Pandemic Studios' upcoming game Mercenaries 2: World in Flames. The game follows guns for hire as they help topple a "power hungry tyrant" in Venezuela. While no real names are used, protestors see the plot as a clear parallel to the Unites States' troubled relationship with Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez, and are labeling the shooter as anti-Venezuela propaganda.

The organization is seeking to gather the signatures of various religious leaders for a letter (PDF format) intended for the one man they feel can and should stop the game from going to market--U2 frontman Bono. The Irish crooner and part-time activist is one of the board members of Elevation Partners, the venture capital firm that is a majority stakeholder in the partnership between Pandemic and BioWare, which brought the two independent game developers together under the name BioWare/Pandemic Studios.

...one man to overthrow.

The letter from the Venezuelan Solidarity Network to Bono reads: "The aim of the video game is full devastation, so any 'person' who moves should be 'shot,' and all the buildings, such as the headquarters of PDVSA, the Venezuelan public oil company, can be 'destroyed.' Our concern is that this game will only deepen an already antagonistic relationship between the U.S. and Venezuelan governments. Millions of Venezuelans fear an invasion from the U.S.; knowing that a company that works for the US military has created a game in which their country is completely destroyed will increase those concerns."

The reference to Pandemic working for the US military stems from the studio's work on an Army-commissioned military-training program, which later was polished for retail as Full Spectrum Warrior.

The deadline for signatures to be included to the letter is March 31, 2007. The network plans to send the letter to Bono the following day.

This isn't the first attempt by the group to reach out to Bono to stop the game from being made. The organization pleaded with the artist to stop production of the game last July. One month before that, a member of the Venezuelan government publicly decried the game, calling it a "justification for an imperialist aggression."

In response to the protest, Pandemic sent GameSpot the following statement from cofounder Josh Resnick: "While we're flattered that people think Mercenaries 2 is a commentary on the real world, it is just a video game--and as they say in the movies, all characters and events are purely fiction. Our setting provides gamers with the overall look and feel of Venezuela, although it is not an accurate street by street depiction and the characters as well as the storyline are completely made up. More to the point, the characters are categorically not based on any real political figures in Venezuela or elsewhere."

The statement continues: "It's common practice in the entertainment business, both movies and video games, to set fictional storylines in real places. This isn't any different than setting a movie like Goodfellas in New York. And while we certainly hope Mercenaries raises the adrenaline flow, anyone wanting to experience or learn more about the real world, we recommend a good history book."

Bono, Edge at centre of Clarence row

A LEADING conservationist has launched a vitriolic attack on U2 rock stars Bono and The Edge accusing them of a "fetish for glamour" in what he calls the "bast*rdisation" of their landmark Dublin property the Clarence Hotel.

"Unfortunately for its owners, the Clarence Hotel is not a pair of sunglasses or a hat," says Michael Smith, the former head of An Taisce, objecting to their plans to re-develop the iconic Dublin hotel and referring to their recent legal battles with stylist Lola Cashman.

"The common good is not served by allowing the richest people in Ireland to build with the benefit of tax incentives, only to demolish when they get bored," says Smith, who, along with barrister Colm Mac Eochaidh, was responsible for launching the Flood (Mahon) Tribunal and who lives across the river Liffey from the U2 hotel. Mr Smith said he was making the objection as a "neighbour and frequenter" of the hotel.

"The City Council has indulged U2 and Mr Paddy McKillen [their property partner] long enough," he maintains. "The owners clearly still have not found what they are looking for."

In their plans, the owners of the Clarence have applied for permission to demolish an award-winning extension and to put a "sky-catcher", or glass dome, on top of the newly developed hotel - which would alter its current boutique status to five-star hotel.

Smith is not the only one concerned that the planning application may be influenced by the "celebrity names" associated with the development.

"I would ask Dublin City Council to consider the possibility that it is not the architectural quality of the Foster design, or its response to the urban context of the Quays, which are the real selling points of this proposal, but rather the weight of the celebrity names associated with it," says conservation architect Richard McLoughlin in his observation on the plan.

They are just two of the nine groups and individuals, including An Taisce and the Irish Georgian Society, who have objected to the €150m revamp of the Clarence.

The hotel was originally owned by the four membersof U2 and well-known Dublin trucking millionaire Harry Crosbie. But Larry Mullen, Adam Clayton andMr Crosbie are no longerassociated with the venture.

The Clarence is now owned by U2’s Bono and the Edge and the low-key Dublin developer Paddy McKillen, who has substantial property interests in the city. The celebrated London architect firm Foster and Partners have been employed to design the new development.

But it is Mr Smith, who has been involved in manny planning battles in the past - through a company called Lanesford, who has been most voiciferous in his objection.

"The fact that the current owners are not up to running a hotel, having allegedly lost €12m on their plaything, does not give them the right to demolish it and start again," says Mr Smith.

He also asks: "The building won a conservation award as recently as 2005 from the Royal Insitute of Architects in Ireland (RIAI). So why demolish it?"

Originally built as a hotel in 1852, it was a well-known haunt of country people and parish priests visiting Dublin until it was taken over in 1992 by members of U2. Since then it has become a hit with some of the world’s biggest names in the worlds of politics and show business, including former US President Bill Clinton and a whole host of supermodels from Naomi Campbell to Christy Turlington and Kate Moss.

Now the owners plan to demolish the Georgian building and transform the 44-bedroom boutique hotel into a nine-story, 141-bedroom five-star hotel and spa complete with signature restaurant, bar and fresh food market. A key feature of the proposal, however, is the "sky-catcher" atrium, which is said to have been inspired by the sleek shape of a Viking boat.

The new expanded hotel will encompass the former Dollard printing works and four other Georgian buildings on Wellington Quay.

Other objectors include An Taisce, which says the proposal is completely inappropriate for both the protected structures and their historic city-centre location, and the Irish Georgian Society, which believes that the development would dwarf adjoining buildings and dominate the Liffey quays.

When contacted, Foster, the architecture firm responsible for the hotel’s proposed development, said they did not wish to make any comment on the matter.

U2 guitar hero The Edge is donating his beloved 1975 Gibson Les Paul guitar to help raise money to help people still struggling from Hurricane Katrina.

The auction will benefit Music Rising, a charity that the U2 guitarist co-founded to replace musical equipment that was lost or destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. The Edge has logged thousands of hours on stage and in studio with the 1975 Les Paul. The 45 year old guitarist has played the 1975 Les Paul throughout his years with u2.

"I wanted to give something really significant that would really mean a lot for me to give. It deserved something that I would miss," The Edge told the Associated Press.

The Icons of Music auction will feature 196 rock-related items, including a guitar that belonged to the legendary Jimi Hendrix, a saxophone signed by former President Bill Clinton, and an original Elvis Presley recording contract.

The Les Paul will be considered a top item in the exhibit of auction highlights that will travel from Los Angeles to Dublin, Ireland and London, England before the auction ends April 21 at Manhattan's Hard Rock Café.

U2 band members Adam Clayton donated a bass guitar, Larry Mullen donated a pair of tom-tom drums, and Bono donated a pair of Emporio Armani sunglasses.

"It's some great poetry to ask the people like myself, who've earned a good living from rock 'n' roll, to donate items to an auction that would help protect and stave off the decline of the music culture in the Gulf Coast," he said.

The Edge, whose real name is David Evans, felt compelled to help New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina in part because New Orleans is considered the soul of American music. He helped to created Music Rising in 2005.

"One of the good things about globalization is it has created a single international music community, and I feel very much part of it," he said. "So this doesn't seem like it's someone else's problem. It's really our problem, too."

The Edge first discovered New Orleans' rich musical culture when he was a young member with U2. He was enamored with New Orleans' jazz funerals. In those scores of musicians would parade down the street in colorful costumed covered with flowers and feathers.

Hurricane Katrina hit the southeast US in August 2005, causing flooding in the Louisiana city of New Orleans that killed about 1,300 people.

The population of New Orleans fell from nearly 500,000 to less than 200,000 as a result of Katrina.

Dublin churches to play U2

Ireland is to see the first celebration of a Christian religious service based on the songs of rock band U2.

Dubbed the U2charist, the event originated in the US and features songs by the group that strike a religious note.

Now two Church of Ireland organisations in Dublin have banded together to arrange a Sort of Homecoming for the service, with its first Irish performance set for St George`s and St Thomas` Church on Sunday April 1.

One of the organisers of the Palm Sunday service insisted, however, that it would be celebrating the Christian faith and not the Irish rockers.

"This service isn`t about the worship of U2, it`s about the worship of Jesus Christ," said Greg Fromholz, of the Christian group 3Rock Youth.

"The U2charist is a great opportunity to reach out to the people in your congregation and larger community, especially young people."

The U2charist service is a liturgy that uses the lyrics and music of U2 songs, many of which are inspired by the Christian beliefs of the band members.

Organisers say the service was originally designed to call people worldwide to a deeper faith and engagement with God`s mission of global reconciliation, justice for the poor and oppressed, and the importance of caring for your neighbour.

All are welcome to attend the U2charist which is to be led by rector of St George and St Thomas` Revd Katharine Poulton and features the Discovery Gospel Choir.

The Dublin event will have a special emphasis on the church`s Millennium Development Goals, including issues such as HIV/Aids and global poverty.

HARRY ENFIELD SENDS UP U2 IN HIS ALL-NEW SKETCH SHOW

By Nicola Methven

COMEDIAN Harry Enfield and his old pal Paul Whitehouse are to poke fun at U2 stars Bono and The Edge in their all-new sketch show.

The pair have reunited on BBC1 for the first time since Harry Enfield and Chums left the screen in 1994.

In the controversial sketches Bono boasts he’s discovered a cure for all ailments - including hayfever. The Irish rocker, an avid campaigner against Aids and poverty, raised eyebrows after mega-rich U2 moved one of their firms to Holland to avoid tax.

Advertisement But Harry, 45, insisted: "It’s all quite affectionate. It’s as much about us as it is about the people we’re doing. When we insult Bono and the Edge, we insult our whole generation."

He added that old favourites like the Self-righteous brothers, famed for their cry of "Oi! No!", will be left out of the latest show. "It’s all new, which is a bit risky," he said.

Whitehouse, 48, added: "It’s like going back in time - but with less hair."

The Food Bank Of New York City will salute the Edge at the annual Can-Do Awards Gala, which is being held at the Pier Sixty restaurant in the Chelsea Piers complex on April 23rd. U2 has supported the Food Bank for years, both by recording public service announcements and by contributing memorabilia to the organization's charity auctions -- and the Edge has also been a buyer, having picked up a lunchbox designed by former president Bill Clinton.

Clinton is the honorary chairman for the Can-Do Awards dinner, which will also pay tribute to actor and former Saturday Night Live castmember Jimmy Fallon, among others.

Tickets for the event run from $500 for an individual admission, all the way up to $50,000 for two prime tables that each seat 10 people. For more information, go to foodbanknyc.org.

U2 memorabilia on display in Dublin

U2 memorabilia - including a pair of Bono’s trademark shades - is going on on display in Dublin. Instruments, clothes and jewellery belonging to Ireland’s most famous sons will sit alongside items linked to some of the best known names in rock music at the city’s Clarence Hotel.

The exhibition comes ahead of the Icons of Music auction in New York’s Time Square during April 16-20.

The collection of rock memorabilia is going on show in LA, Dublin and London ahead of the US sale.

The auction will be one of the most important of its kind including 200 lots holding memories of greats such as Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin.

The proceeds will boost the Music Rising campaign co-founded by The Edge to aid musicians of the Gulf Coast Region after the devastation of hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

The exhibition comes days after U2 frontman Bono accepted an honorary knighthood in a ceremony at British ambassador David Reddaway’s official residence in Dublin.

Fellow band members The Edge and Adam Clayton joined the lead singer’s wife Ali and their four children - Jordan, Eve, Eli and John - for the reception.

The award was in recognition of the band’s contribution to music and the charity work of its members.

U2’s Bono On “American Idol Gives Back” Special Program Tonight

Tonight’s results show, beginning at 8:00pm EST, will feature performances by not only the contestants, but they will be joined by a host of stars, most stunningly, the legendary U2 frontman and recently knighted humanitarian, Bono.

Not surprisingly, Bono’s global efforts to fight AIDS and poverty make him a perfect spokesperson to help publicize the hugely successful Fox shows philanthropic efforts aptly title American Idol Gives Back.

Bono will be meeting with the final six contestants to discuss the organization he works with One.org and their efforts in Africa to bring awareness to the deadly disease AIDS and how it has devastated that continent. The contestants will also be performing a song that Bono and Dave Stewart wrote called “American Prayer” about the AIDS epidemic.

Also appearing on the epic 2-hour special with Bono is a veritable dream team of stars, including Celine Dion, Kelly Clarkson, Gwen Stefani, Earth, Wind &Fire, Il Divo, Keira Knightley, Hugh Grant, Josh Groban with the African Children’s Choir, Jack Black, Helen Mirren, Rascal Flatts, Quincy Jones, Carrie Underwood, Annie Lennox.

Viewers will be able to phone in contributions to toll-free pledge lines during the show and proceeds will go to various charitable organizations being represented by the “Idol Gives Back” cause.

Ryan Seacrest also announced that something shocking would be happening on the show tonight also in the closing of last night’s performances.

I wonder if Paula’s going to string a sentence together? Or Ryan’s going to make out with Simon? Or Randy’s going to lay off the donuts? Whatever it is, I will be tuning in to see Bono and the host of cool stars talk about something more important than themselves.

For a change.

Has Bono had plastic surgery?

Sunday 29 April 2007, by Dom

See online : Daily Mail

Source: U2 France

He is almost as well known for his distinct wraparound sunglasses as he is for his music. But now the glasses have gone.... as has a recently seen plaster.

Which rather begs the question - has international superstar Bono had a little remedial eyework?

http://www.u2france.com/local/cache-vignettes/L468xH304/BonoNoGlassesAP_468x304-13815.jpg

Beaming from ear to ear, the 46-year-old musician took the incredibly rare step of removing his distinctive orange shades and posing for photographers.

Boasting a fresh-faced complexion, and no hint of any under eye bags, the U2 frontman has every reason to smile.

http://www.u2france.com/local/cache-vignettes/L468xH508/BonoHalfOffG_468x508-74e21.jpg

He made his wrinkle-free appearance at the launch of a new third world documentary, We Are Together, in New York, as he posed up with members of an orphanage featured in the film.

When one cheeky youngster pointed up at his face, Bono laughed before happily removing the offending shades and plonking them over the giggling tot’s eyes.

The move ensured that all attention focused squarely on the Irish star’s remarkably bright and smooth eyes.

http://www.u2france.com/local/cache-vignettes/L468xH516/2BonoNoGlassesBIG_468x516-31a6c.jpg

Last night, leading plastic surgeons suggested that scarring from recent plastic surgery had now healed, prompting Bono to remove the glasses and show off his new, evergreen face.

"I definitely think Bono has had lower blepharoplasty - lower eyelid surgery - which the plaster covered up back in December," said top plastic surgeon Dr Lucy Glancey.

"He probably had quite a bit of bruising under the eye at this time - sometimes you get no bruising after surgery, sometimes you get bruising under just one eye, giving what looks like a black eye.

"A proper black eye could take up to six weeks to heal, on top of slight scarring, which would explain why Bono has remained hidden under sunglasses until now.

"As well as the eye lift, he has probably had Botox to lift his brows becuase there is still a skin overhang in this area which wouldn’t be there if he had had an upper blepharoplasty.

"He also looks to have had Botox all around the eye area, resulting in a softening of the lines and, on top of this, a mid and low face-lift.

This stubble- beard that he’s grown will quite cleverly cover any scarring.

"I think Bono has had a reasonably good result - his work hasn’t been overly done, and he just looks a lot fresher. I’m sure he’s pleased with the results which is why he’s so much happier to show off his face."

Of course, the Live 8 star has never publicly admitted to having had any cosmetic work.

And he was rumoured to be livid when an unauthorised biography published four years ago suggested that he considered having extensive liposuction.

He is, though, notoriously precious about his aesthetic appearance.

Two years ago, along with fellow band mate Larry Mullen Jnr, he took his former stylist to court, accusing her of stealing one of his outfits.

The singer - real name Paul Hewson - accused Lola Cashman of taking a pair of his black trousers, a green sweatshirt, a pair of silver earrings and the "iconic" Stetson he wore on an album cover.

U2 make 'worst-ever pop lyric' list

http://newsfeed.tcm.ie/images/people/u2grammys.jpg

The competition was fierce, but a song by Nineties star Des’ree has been voted the worst ever pop lyric.

“I don’t want to see a ghost/It’s the sight that I fear most/I’d rather have a piece of toast/Watch the evening news,” she sings on Life.

It was the runaway winner in a listener poll for BBC6 Music’s Marc Riley show.

U2 also made the top 10 with this lyric from 'Elevation':

"I’ve got no self control/Been living like a mole now/Going down, excavation/High and high in the sky/You make me feel like I can flySo high/Elevation."

Second was the astonishingly awful lyric from Snap’s Rhythm Is A Dancer: “I’m as serious as cancer/When I say rhythm is a dancer.”

Current chart darlings Razorlight were third.

On their 2005 hit Somewhere Else, Johnny Borrell sings: “And I met a girl/She asked me my name/I told her what it was.”

Riley counted down the top 10 on his radio show tonight. Listeners had voted for the past three weeks.

Other entries included Champagne Supernova by Oasis: “Slowly walking down the hall/Faster than a canonball/Where were you when we were getting high?”

Duran Duran and Black Sabbath also earned a mention.

“Bad lyrics can come in all forms – some acceptable, some less so,” Riley said.

“For instance, in the right hands, defiantly dumb lyrics such as Manfred Mann’s Do wah Diddy Diddy can be more than acceptable as part of the pop idiom. In fact, we embrace them – let’s not forget it was a number one smash.

“But imagine the same words streaming from the crown prince of gloom, Leonard Cohen, accompanied only by a forlorn expression and a battered banjo. It would, quite rightly, be mocked and held up for much ridicule.

“In short, dumb is sometimes ok, whereas pious and pretentious and pompous are obviously never to be encouraged nor tolerated.”

Top 10 Worst Pop Lyrics:

1 Des’ree: 'Life':

I don’t want to see a ghost

It’s the sight that I fear most

I’d rather have a piece of toast

Watch the evening news

2 Snap: 'Rhythm Is a Dancer'

I’m as serious as cancer

When I say rhythm is a dancer

3 Razorlight: 'Somewhere Else'

And I met a girl

She asked me my name

I told her what it was

4 ABC: 'That Was then but this Is Now'

More sacrifices than an Aztec priest

Standing here straining at that leash

All fall down

Can’t complain, mustn’t grumble

Help yourself to another piece of apple crumble

5 U2: 'Elevation'

I’ve got no self control

Been living like a mole now

Going down, excavation

High and high in the sky

You make me feel like I can fly

So high

Elevation

6 Toto: 'Africa'

The wild dogs cry out in the night

As they grow restless longing for some solitary company

I know that I must do what’s right

Sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti

7 Oasis: 'Champagne Supernova'

Slowly walking down the hall

Faster than a cannonball

Where were you when we were getting high?

8 Duran Duran: 'Is There Something I Should Know?'

And fiery demons all dance when you walk through that door

Don’t say you’re easy on me you’re about as easy as a nuclear war

9 Himan League: 'The Lebanon'

Before he leaves the camp he stops

He scans the world outside

And where there used to be some shops

Is where the snipers sometimes hide

10 Black Sabbath: 'War Pigs'

Generals gathered in their masses

Just like witches at black masses
