Bono says he Got Under Sinatra’s Skin

http://i48.tinypic.com/2n24oy0.jpg

BONO admits he annoyed Frank Sinatra so much on a video shoot for their 1993 cover of I’ve Got You Under My Skin that the crooner stormed out.

The U2 frontman said: “We turned up at a bar to do the shoot but our cameras didn’t work – twice.

Frank was known as ‘One Take Frank’ so when we asked him to do it again he bellowed: ‘What’s going on?!’

He said we were amateurs – and disappeared.”

Ousted former "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" director Julie Taymor unexpectedly joined former collaborators Bono and the Edge of U2 onstage at the musical's Broadway opening June 14, 2011.

advertisement

Like in any great theater production, the conflict between director Julie Taymor and the producers of the Broadway production of "Spider-Man" peaked in intensity just before the resolution.

A tentative deal settling a dispute over her role in the musical was disclosed in a document filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan. It said the case could be reopened within two months if the agreement breaks down. Settlement terms were not released.

Dale Cendali, lead attorney for the producers, said she could not comment on the agreement in principle, except to confirm that it was reached Thursday.

The stage seemed set for a January trial.

Just last week, lawyers for "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" wrote that "the lesson Spider-Man offers us — that with great power, comes great responsibility — appears to have been lost on Taymor, who continues to seek to avoid her obligations."

And that court filing came not long after lawyers for Taymor complained that the producers in a counterclaim had "launched a full-scale attack on Taymor aimed at assassinating her character and seeking to hold her singly responsible — financially and reputationally — for the musical's problems."

Taymor filed the lawsuit in November, saying her copyrighted written works were violated when she was fired last year and the musical's script was rewritten after the $75 million production had trouble getting past previews. The musical has since become a success. She was seeking damages exceeding $1 million.

Taymor sued the producers in November and they countersued, saying Taymor's treatment was based on pre-existing "Spider-Man" comics and films.

In the countersuit, lawyers said Bono and Edge of the rock band U2 had originally suggested Taymor serve as the musical's director, and she joined the production team in 2004, writing a three-page treatment.

Bono turns tables on pal Gavin as Electric Picnic off to a hot start

http://i47.tinypic.com/2eqcqkj.jpg

BONO was a surprise addition to the Electric Picnic festival when it kicked off in brilliant sunshine yesterday.

Arriving by helicopter at 6.15pm, the U2 frontman wasn't performing but turned up to catch a set by his long-time friend Gavin Friday on the first day of the music and arts event.

For decades Friday has jetted around the globe as U2's 'special adviser', giving them notes about their live shows.

But last night the roles were reversed as Bono sized up the former Virgin Prune's performance on the main stage just after 7pm.

The only problem with having a superstar pal watching your show is that photographers' lenses were all trained on Bono watching from the mixing desk rather than on the stage.

Playground

Nevertheless, Gavin dedicated his song 'Angel' to Bono and his wife Ali who are celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary this month.

It was Bono's first visit to the Electric Picnic, which is now in its ninth year.

Take That's Gary Barlow admitted on the 'X Factor' last weekend that he had never heard of the Electric Picnic, but for the 32,500 Irish music fans in Stradbally, Co Laois, this weekend it's the highlight of their music year.

Wayne Stuart (30) spoke for many. Originally from Co Clare but now working in Glasgow, Wayne had returned to Ireland specially for the three-day event.

"It's not just the music. There are so many other attractions to the Electric Picnic like Mindfield and Body & Soul," he said.

"I'd describe it as an adult playground. I went to Oxegen for the first eight years but I'm not 18 any more and the age range at Electric Picnic goes from kids to senior citizens.

"I love the atmosphere so much that it got me back from Scotland."

The biggest drawback to any Irish music festival is the unpredictable weather, but by teatime last night the meadows of the 600-acre Stradbally estate were bathed in balmy sunshine.

There's more good news, with Met Eireann promising today will start off dry and bright, and tomorrow will be even warmer and sunnier, with temperatures hitting 20C or 21C.

Tailbacks didn't prove a problem either, with heavy but steadily-moving traffic around Stradbally last night.

Spirits

That left one genuine problem for festival-goers -- the clash of top names on different stages with Ed Sheeran, Christy Moore and Icelandic band Sigur Ros all performing between 11pm and midnight last night.

Even a three-hour set from Goth doom merchants The Cure tonight seems unlikely to dampen spirits.

One of the more unusual performers on the many stages over the weekend will be celeb agent Noel Kelly. (See The Diary -- Review Section).

More used to representing Ryan Tubridy and Grainne Seoige, the 49-year-old will be fronting the Transformation Blues Band on the Salty Dog stage at 7pm this evening.

However, the NK management boss said his "singing the blues" had nothing to do with salary cuts for his stars in RTE.

Rather, he's doing a favour for the band whose singer had been unavailable for the festival and looking forward to a return to his former role as frontman with Dublin blues band The Leadbellies.

Weekend festival tickets are still available for €230. Sunday day tickets are €99.50.

U2 frontman Bono must have vertigo after his ethical clothing firm Edun reported it was down millions.

Accounts show Edun Apparel, founded by the rock star and his wife Ali Hewson in 2005, suffered losses to the tune of €6.8million in 2011.

The company is also 49 per cent owned by the world’s largest luxury goods group LVMH which put €6.7million into Edun in 2009.

The Paris-headquartered group also owns some of the world’s top brands — including Louis Vuitton, Donna Karan, Moet Chandon and Veuve Clicquot champagne.

Bono and Ali have featured in Louis Vuitton’s Core Values ad campaign wearing Edun’s organic cotton clothes, which are mainly sourced in Africa.

The Hewsons set up Edun — a play on the word ‘nude’ — to help create a positive trading relationship with Africa.

It works in Kenya, Morocco, Madagascar, Uganda and Tunisia — and aims to produce 40 per cent of its seasonal fashion collection in Africa by 2013.

According to its 2011 accounts, the company had a shareholders’ deficit of €23.2million in December 2011, up from €16.3million the previous year.

LVMH holds its interest in Edun through Irish-registered firm UFIP. That company’s main debt at the end of 2010 was a €9.5million loan to Edun, not due for repayment until 2024.

LVMH itself saw a 15 per cent rise in sales last year.

Scrawl I want is you: U2 fans warned off autograph faker

AN eBay trader is making a mint by passing off faked Bono autographs, the Irish Sun can reveal.

Alarm bells about the London scammer’s signings first rang after a U2 fan began probing his wares.

Sharp-eyed Gary Paul spotted a suspect signature of motorbike legend Carl Fogarty on the site of ‘warriorsquare2011’.

But when he contacted the world champ to see if it was genuine, Fogarty tweeted back: “Definitely a fake!!”

Autograph-hunter Gary, from Dublin, raged: “This guy is making a fortune from unsuspecting buyers around the world on the basis that what he is passing off is quality merchandise.

“He’s selling lots of U2 stuff. His Bono and Noel Gallagher autographs in particular are terrible. I know that from all the ones I have as a collector.

“I’ve sent at least six mails to eBay informing them this seller is milking people.”

Gary said he can’t contact other bidders on the items — which come with a Certificate Of Authenticity — to warn them as the auctions are private.

In an email seen by the Irish Sun, ‘warriorsquare2011’ bragged of having the scrawls of Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Bruce Springsteen and Mohammad Ali in his “filing cabinet”.

eBay and the seller behind the warriorsquare2011 account were unavailable for comment.

How much does a Bono autograph trade at these days?

'U2: Trans-' conference booked for 2013 in Cleveland, with help from Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum

Bono and the lads of U2 have been more than a mere rock ‘n’ roll band for decades now, having transcended themselves into a global cultural icon whose music, tours and other creative works are an expression of the essential conflicts of the modern age. The band even has its own big-time academic confab – the U2 Conference – and the 2013 meeting will take place April 26-27 right here in Cleveland with the help of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.

The 2013 conference theme is “U2: TRANS-,” and will focus on the band as a boundary-crossing creative collaborative whose work gets folks thinking about everything from the tension between spirituality and technology to individualism and global citizenship. The conference will draw scholars, critics, teachers and fans from around the world, and will be keynoted by Ann Powers, a U2 expert and popular music critic for National Public Radio.

Local venues for various conference events have yet to be announced. Some will likely take place at the Rock Hall.

This will be the second U2 Conference. The first, held in 2009 in at North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC., drew attendees from seven different countries and featured more than 40 formal presentations, three films, and a weekend of networking opportunities. It also produced the edited collection of essays Exploring U2: Is This Rock ‘n’ Roll

Paul McCartney, Bono Cited As Richest Singers

September 13, 2012 at 11:44 AM (PT)

PAUL MCCARTNEY and U2 singer BONO were cited as the two "Richest Lead Singers In The World," according to CELEBRITYNETWORK.COM. MCCARTNEY's net worth is estimated to be around $800 million, while BONO is tabbed to be worth $600 million.

Interestingly, BONO's net worth once topped $1 billion when his private equity venture's investment in FACEBOOK took off during the IPO, but the social giant's worth is now just 40% of its opening high.

The rest of the top 10 include JIMMY BUFFETT ($400 million), ELTON JOHN ($320 million), MICK JAGGER ($305 million), GENE SIMMONS ($300 million), STING ($290 million), PHIL COLLINS ($250 million), DAVE MATTHEWS ($250 million) and PRINCE ($250 million). The only women listed in the top 100 were GWEN SETFANI (#29, $80 million) and STEVIE NICKS (#38, $65 million).

The figures were acquired from all publicly available information including salaries, real estate holdings, divorces, record sales, royalties and endorsements -- minus taxes, manager’s fees, agents’ fees, and lifestyle.

Bono was left in a panic when he ran out of cigarettes at a celebrity party he was hosting

The U2 front man threw an exclusive bash after the GQ Men of the Year Awards in London on Tuesday for a host of celebrities including Sacha Baron Cohen, Alan Carr and Liam Gallagher but was dismayed when he ran out of cigarettes for those of his guests who enjoy a smoke.

According to the Daily Mirror newspaper, after an initial panic an enterprising butler popped out to the local corner shop on behalf of the guests.

Bono also invited a host of Olympians including Greg Rutherford, Louis Smith, Christine Ohuruogu to the party at PR guru Matthew Freud’s London home and while they don’t smoke, they were thrilled to find a games room downstairs complete with ping pong table.

After a few competitive games, the entire group returned to the party.

Bono was recently linked to a role on ‘American Idol’ after exiting judge Jennifer Lopez tipped him for the judging panel, saying they needed someone big to replace her.

When asked who should take her place on the show, she said: "I think Bono or Bon Jovi or Mick Jagger. You know me, I think big."

Bono's wife has ancient wardrobe

Cover MediaCover Media – 18 hours ago

Bono’s wife’s wardrobe is full of clothes which are over 20 years old.

The U2 frontman has been married to Alison Hewson for 30 years. Although his band is one of the biggest on the planet, Alison has no interest in spending her husband’s wealth on designer items.

“I like to look simple relaxed and uncomplicated. But you would die if you saw the state of my closet: most of my clothes are 20 years old and I hate shopping with a passion,” she laughed.

“I love Vivienne Westwood and the way she hits the female form, though there is nothing uncomplicated, simple and relaxed about her clothes.”

Alison is proud of her slim figure and takes steps to maintain it. She watches what she eats and exercises regularly.

“I try not to eat anything out of a packet. Fresh food seems to give more energy but, like most women, my weakness is chocolate,” she told Amuse magazine.

“[i do] mainly yoga. I don’t normally get the chance to do it with an instructor so I have a guide, a little piece of paper.”
