Bono gave Jake Shears advice on being a rock star.

The Scissor Sisters frontman thought it was ''surreal'' when he met the U2 rocker at a gig and he proceeded to lecture him on staying grounded in the music industry.

Jake said: ''He did! He came to see us play New York's Museum of Modern Art. There was this art installation, a completely white room with no ceiling so you saw blue sky above you, and my mom, boyfriend and some friends were there.

''Bono gave me the speech about not losing your way, keeping focused and staying grounded. It was one of the most surreal moments of my life!''

The 'Laura' hitmaker said he only realised just how famous he really is when he heard his entourage was protecting him from a violent stalker.

Jake revealed to Time Out magazine: ''I travel with my trainer, and he'd f*** anyone up if they laid a finger on me. There was a weird moment when we were playing The 02 and I had three bodyguards sleeping on either side of my hotel room. I was like, 'Wow, I guess I'm really famous!'

''Afterwards I found out someone had been sending letters saying that they were going to shoot me.''

However, Jake is no diva and says he hasn't let the band's success go to his head and would never spend money on lavish gadgets like a helicopter.

The singer added: '' If I had that kind of money, I'd hire 100 go-go dancers. Or throw a house party: get a smoke machine, some lasers, a decent DJ and have a good time!''

U2's Larry Mullen returns to the big screen.

A man of many talents, U2's Larry Mullen is now turning his hand back to movies. Can he act? Well, perhaps we should consult his acting debut, 2011's Man on the Train to find out; I'm not quite sure myself. Reported this morning by IFTN, the world's biggest rock group's drummer will star opposite Maria Doyle Kennedy (The Commitments, also the evil wench ruining Bates' life in Downton Abbey) and French beauty Juliette Binoche in an Irish-Norwegian-Swedish co-production, A Thousand Times Goodnight. The movie centres on the story of Rebekka (Binoche), a war photographer caught between a rock and a hard place - that being the needs of her family and the demands of her job. Game of Thrones star Nikolak Coster-Waldau takes on the role of Binoche's husband.

As for Mullen? Well he's set to take on the best friend role to the struggling couple. While it's hardly a front and centre role, it's certainly a start.

Bono thanks Vatican for helping with debt forgiveness

Published: November 18, 2012

U2 singer Bono travelled to the Vatican on Friday to thank the Church for its work to free the world's least developed countries from their foreign debt, enabling them to invest in education, reports the Catholic News Agency.

Bono spent nearly an hour speaking with Cardinal Peter Turkson, president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, according to Vatican Radio.

In 2000, the Church was an important backer of the “Drop the Debt” campaign, which coincided with the Church's jubilee year. Bono was one of the leading figures in the campaign, and is known for his activism for world’s poorest people.

Drop the Debt was an effort to persuade first-world nations to forgive the debt owed them by the poorest countries.

The success of that effort has made possible “an extra 52 million children going to school,” Bono told Vatican Radio, since governments were able to use the money they would have had to pay back for investment in schools.

Bono said the Church deserves “incredible credit” for their role in securing debt forgiveness, and that Catholics should be made aware of how their faith was central in the efforts.

Calvin Harris, U2's Bono, Tiesto for charity album 'Dance (RED)'

Published Wednesday, Nov 21 2012, 10:25 GMT | By Lewis Corner

Calvin Harris and U2's Bono are among the artists recruited by Tiesto to feature on a new charity album.

The DJ has secured a number of big electronic dance music names to appear on new collection Dance (RED), Save Lives.

Avicii and Diplo have also recorded cuts for the set, which aims to raise money for the anti-AIDS organisation (RED).

"When I went to Africa in 2006, I was struck by the devastating effect of AIDS," said Tiesto in a statement.

"Now the world has an incredible chance to make sure that babies are born HIV-free by 2015, and the dance community is going to make a lot of noise to help make this happen."

(RED) CEO Deborah Dugan added: "What Tiesto and his friends in the dance music community are bringing to this fight is invaluable.

"They bring the kind of heat that is so desperately needed to keep this issue at the top of the agenda."

The album will feature Tiesto's recent collaboration with Bono on a remake of U2's 'Pride'.

Dance (RED), Save Lives will be accompanied by a YouTube live stream from Tiesto and other DJs during Melbourne's Stereosonic Festival, which will be staged during World AIDS Day weekend on December 1 and 2.

Dr Dre eclipses U2 on Forbes' rich list

Last year's highest-paid musicians U2 came in at number four this year with combined earnings of $78 million from their three-year 360 tour.

Irish rock band U2 are the fourth highest-paid musicians in the world, according to the latest Forbes' rich list.

The band was eclipsed for top spot by veteran hip-hop star Dr Dre who topped Forbes' list of the 25 biggest-earning musicians in 2012.

Dre's lucrative headphones business, Beats by Dre, helped him gross $100 million in pre-tax earnings, according to the magazine.

The list's top 10 was dominated by veteran musicians, with Pink Floyd's bassist and singer Roger Waters coming in at number two with earnings of $88 million from his lucrative The Wall Live tour, and British singer Elton John at number three with $80 million.

Last year's highest-paid musicians U2 came in at number four this year with combined earnings of $78 million from their three-year 360 tour.

1990s British boy band Take That, who reformed in 2005, rounded out the top five with $69 million, earned from an eight-date tour at London's Wembley Stadium, which became the highest-grossing single stadium tour to date.

Forbes compiles its annual highest-paid musicians list by estimating artists' earnings from music sales, live shows, endorsements and merchandising. Earlier this year, Dutch DJ Tiesto was named the highest-paid DJ in the fast-growing electronic dance music industry.

The only two artists under 30 to break the top 10 were country-pop darling Taylor Swift who tied with ex-Beatle Paul McCartney at number eight with earnings of $57 million, and Canadian pop star Justin Bieber who tied with country star Toby Keith at number with earnings of $55 million.

Pop star and "X Factor" judge Britney Spears entered the list at number seven with earnings of $58 million, cementing her comeback after a turbulent few years. Her earnings encompass her multi-million dollar "X Factor" deal, music sales and endorsements.

Spears led eight female artists in the top 25 list, including R&B star Rihanna at number with $53 million, coming ahead of Lady Gaga at number 13 with $52 million.

Grammy-winning British singer Adele notched was 22nd on the list, tied with Kanye West, with earnings of $35 million following a record year for her album "21."

Music's power couple, singer Beyonce and rapper Jay-Z, came in at 18th and 20th, respectively, with earnings of $40 million and $38 million.

Eve Hewson talks about growing up with Bono’s fame - U2 frontman's daughter can spot fakers

Savvy young actress says she can spot fake friends at NYC a mile off

Bono's daughter Eve Hewson is all grown up

Bono’s daughter, Eve Hewson said that her dad’s celebrity status can bring out the worst in people and she’s learned how to spot the fakers.

Hewson (21) is currently studying acting at New York City University and says that most of the time she is not recognized. But when people want to become friends with her because of her rock star connection, it’s obvious. She can instantly recognize the people who are only interested in befriending her because of her father’s fame.

She told ‘Flaunt’ magazine, “It’s made it, in some ways, easier to find friends because it brings out certain bad things in people.”

She added, “Then you can see easier. Well, you can smell the desperation in people.” Hewson commented about other people, “It’s just like, how you can hang out, if you can tell a good story, if you can make a good laugh.”

Her parents kept her out of the limelight while she was growing up in southside Dublin. She said, “Obviously, every now and then someone would start singing a U2 song at a party, but aside from that, it’s not really about who you are, what you have.” She is Bono’s youngest daughter. She has an older sister, Jordan (23) and two younger brothers, Elijah (14) and John Abraham (11).

The young actress is already heading towards a celebrity status all her own. She has received praise for her performance ‘This Must Be the Place’ in which she plays the surrogate daughter of a depressed rock star, who was played by Sean Penn. However, she says she did not receive much attention while the film was in production. She said, “Nobody really cares about me. There are other famous actors on set that are more fascinating.”

Hewson recently finished filming ‘Blood Ties’, which features many big Hollywood names. Clive Owen, Billy Crudup, James Caan, and Marion Cotillard star in the film.

She says Juliette Lewis and Evan Rachel are her influences and likes that Frances McDormand chooses different, sometimes quirky roles. Hewson said, “I think you have to be very forward about what you want. You have to be confident that you have a vision and that you want to play different sides of yourself. I think the crazier and weirder you are you will be able to get out there.”

Bono Takes Family on Spiritual Trip

U2 frontman Bono has thanked his wife and children for looking after him as he recovered from back surgery by taking them on a tour of the world's most spiritual places.

4 January 2013

Bono treated his family to a round-the-world holy pilgrimage.

The U2 rocker has finally recovered from the back surgery he had in 2010 and decided to thank his wife Alison Hewson and their children Jordan, 23, Memphis, 21, Elijah, 13 and 11-year-old John for their constant support by whisking them off on a luxury tour of the world's most spiritual regions.

He told The Sun newspaper: "I've possibly had the best year personally because I've spent most of it with my family. Having been away on tour for so long, then taking so long to recover from my back injury, it was time for a trip.

"I decided to take the family on tour as a little thank you to the kids for being so patient with me. Because I wasn't busy with the band we kind of went wandering. Once in a lifetime sort of stuff, places like Africa and Central America.

"We also went to Jordan and Israel and Peru. It was really great to have time off."

The 52-year-old 'With Or Without You' crooner suffered a spinal injury while rehearsing for U2's world tour in 2010 and had to have emergency neurosurgery in a Munich clinic.

Bono - real name Paul David Hewson - has also been busy in the studio with U2 as the band are currently penning material for a new album.

U2 frontman says digital revolution is 'key to poverty fight'

By Peter Flanagan

Monday, 7 January 2013

He is a global music icon and high-profile technology investor, so it is no surprise that Bono believes technology can "change the world" for the better.

In an interview, the U2 frontman said tech has already changed the developing world "in ways we couldn't have imagined" and will continue to do so.

"The tech that's been delivered has been staggering," he said.

"For example, a complex 15-drug Aids regimen compressed into one pill a day [now saving 8m lives], the insecticide-treated bed net cut malaria deaths by half in eight African countries in the last three years, kids' vaccinations, the internet, and spread of information - a deadly combination for dictators, for corruption.

"There is no silver bullet to ending poverty and disease, no magic technology ... [but] technology provides the means [to do it]," he added.

Bono has reputedly made a fortune through his private equity firm's investment in Facebook, but he is clearly more concerned with using technology for the wider good, especially in developing countries and combating extreme poverty. "Technology has already helped tackle the extreme poverty in Africa of living on less than $1.25 [78p] a day," the multi-millionaire singer (left) said.

"The digital revolution that we are living through, the rapid advances in health and agri-technology, these things have become core weapons in [fighting extreme poverty]."

LARRY MULLEN Jr is used to being at the back of the stage, but last night he was very much front and centre.

The U2 drummer walked the red carpet without Bono as he officially unveiled himself as a film star.

He chose Dublin's IFI cinema for the opening of The Man On The Train.

Although U2's frontman didn't make the event, wife Ali was there, with The Edge and pals Guggi, Gavin Friday and Shane MacGowan.

A remake of Patrice Leconte's award-winning French film of the same name, The Man On The Train co-stars Donald Sutherland.

New spider species named in honour of Angelina Jolie and Bono

Washington, Sun, 20 Jan 2013ANI

Jason Bond from Alabama's Auburn University has identified 33 new species of trapdoor spider (genus Aptostichus), including three of them in the California desert at Joshua Tree National Park.

The park's namesake is featured in the title and cover of U2's 1987 album, 'The Joshua Tree', CBS News reported.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise reports that Bond named two of the spiders after Indian tribes and one, A. bonoi, after Bono.

Aptostichus bonoi, a newly-discovered spider species form the California desert at Joshua Tree, named for U2 front man Bono in honour of his 'Joshua Tree' album.

Bond also named other spider species after actress Angelina Jolie and civil rights activist Cesar Chavez.

All but three of the new species were discovered in California.

Other species have been named after naturalist John Muir, photographer and photojournalist Dorothea Lange, magician Penn Jillette, President Barack Obama, Sarlacc, and Bond's 9-year-old daughter, Elisabeth. (ANI)

POSTMEDIA NEWS, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS JANUARY 19, 2013

Irish rocker Adam Clayton, still reeling after his former housekeeper was jailed for defrauding him of $4 million over a four-year period, is taking no chances with his personal security.

The U2 bassist has applied for planning permission with Irish authorities to build a security lodge outside his 18th century stately home, where he has lived for more than 20 years.

It is believed the standalone building would be used to employ security guards on rotating shifts, the Irish Independent reported.

The house, in the Dublin mountains, is famous to U2 fans as the birthplace of the group's chart-topping album Joshua Tree.

According to a report in the Independent, Clayton's former personal assistant, Carol Hawkins, was jailed for seven years after being convicted on 181 counts of theft.

U2 Donated $6.67 Million From 2009 Gigs to Irish Music Education

Posted on Jan 22nd 2013 11:05AM by Jason MacNeil

U2's longtime manager Paul McGuinness has revealed the group gave their entire profits from three massive gigs back in 2009 at Dublin's Croke Park to charity on their 360 World tour.

The Irish Times reports the group donated 5,000,000 Euros ($6.67 million U.S.) from the gigs in Dublin in July of that year to Music Generation which funds structured music education across Ireland. While McGuinness didn't reveal any other numbers, he did say it was U2's practice "going way, way back" to give the profits away, but it was done discreetly. The generous donation by U2 in 2009 came after the Irish government announced it couldn't afford the project across the country.

The revelation coincided with The Edge appearing at an announcement by the Irish government that they will co-fund Music Generation from 2014 onward with the goal to take over funding of the project two years later.

"In this case we really wanted to put our names to this because we feel strongly about it," the guitarist said, adding the project would be "enhanced" with their support and that music education should be "a top priority" around Ireland.

"We also had the encouragement to use the music rooms when we first formed the band," he added. "At that stage none of the members of the band had an idea where it would lead. We were just doing it because it was fun. The chance to pass that opportunity on is important."

In other news, McGuinness said the group are working on a new studio album with the hope "they will finish the album soon and it will be out this year." The album would be the follow-up to 2009's No Line on the Horizon.

Bono: Micro Bill is my biggest idol

ROCK God Bono reckons Bill Gates has changed the entire world TWICE.

He showed tycoon pal Bill around Dublin this week — and was full of praise for the billionaire’s giving nature.

Bono said: “Bill didn’t just change the world once with Microsoft. He’s changed it twice, because what they are doing with vaccinations is a giant thing if you live in certain parts of the world — saving countless lives.”

Bono and Bill enjoyed a few late night tipples at the plush Westbury hotel, with the U2 frontman revealing: “He’s a good friend and it was terrific to have him here in Ireland.”

The rock star appeared alongside Bill and his wife Melinda on the cover of Time when the trio were named the magazine’s People of the Year in 2005.

Bono added: “There’s now 160 people working in two charity organisations I am involved with — Red and One — and that’s because of Bill and Melinda.”

Bono and his wife Ali, accompanied by The Edge and his wife Morleigh, supported pal Guggi at the launch of his latest exhibition in Dublin on Thursday.

The Edge revealed U2’s new album is well on its way. He said: “We’re looking at having it out around the end of the summer.”

U2's Bono Joins Advisory Board of Hurricane Sandy Relief Organization

5 February 2013

U2 singer Bono has become a member of the Honorary Advisory Board for the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund. New Jersey’s first lady, Mary Pat Christie, announced on Tuesday that the famed rocker and humanitarian, along with NBC newsman Brian Williams, had joined the nonprofit organization’s board. Celebrities already serving on the charity’s advisory board include Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi.

“It’s an honor to be asked to support the governor [Chris Christie] and first lady in this ongoing effort,” says Bono in a statement. “New Jersey is always a highlight of any U2 tour. What’s inspiring about the New Jersey relief effort are not the names on the Board, which I’m humbled to serve with, but the volunteers who have rallied all over the state, in fact all over the tri-state area.”

Mary Pat Christie launched the relief fund just four days after the devastating hurricane struck the northeastern U.S. this fall. So far, it has raised more than $32 million dollars to help rebuild the damaged area.

“We are thrilled that Bono and Brian have lent their names to assist New Jersey families in rebuilding their lives and overcoming the most destructive storm in our state’s history,” says Mrs. Christie, who is the chair of the fund. “The dollars we have raised will support organizations on the front lines of the recovery effort and address the unmet needs of New Jersey communities.”

U2’s frontman has optimistic view for the future

By KERRY O’SHEA, IrishCentral Staff Writer

In a supplement for The Irish Times this week, U2’s frontman Bono writes a piece in which he envisions not only Ireland, but the entire world ten years on in 2023. The piece is a part of The Irish Times’ support for Hireland.

Bono’s view for just ten years from now is an overwhelmingly optimistic one. In the piece, he sees himself delivering his own answers from space, indicating that U2 would be the first band to go outside Earth’s boundaries.
