Clinton supporters snub U2

Hot Press, June 27, 2007

When fans were asked to choose a theme song for Hilary Clinton's Presidential campaign, it seems U2 didn't quite cut it.

U2 have missed out on the possibly dubious honour of soundtracking Hilary Clinton's Presidential election campaign.

Wanting a rousing tune to rally her Democratic troops over the next 18 months, Hils put a shortlist of eight songs on her website and asked her supporters to pick their favourite.

Although presented with such quality options as U2's "Beautiful Day," K.T. Tunstall's "Suddenly I See," Dixie Chicks' "Ready to Run" and the Temptations' "Get Ready," the song that got the nod was Celine Dion's execrable power ballad "You + I."

ONE campaign launches Iowa effort targeting presidential candidates

Radio Iowa, June 28, 2007

O.Kay Henderson

An Iowan who grew up in Africa joined two former state officials this morning to kick-off an effort to get presidential candidates to address global poverty issues. The ONE campaign, launched by rock star Bono, is the united effort of a variety of groups to wipe out poverty in Africa and now the ONE organization is targeting their message to Iowans because the state holds the first event of the presidential nominating season.

Natalie Sugira (photo at right) grew up in Rwanda and moved to the United States 17 years ago with her husband. Sugira, who now holds a masters degree, was the first person in her family to finish elementary school. "I have the greatest responsibility to speak for those Rwandan women, African women who have never gotten the chance to go to school," she said.

Sugira lives in Cedar Falls and works part-time at the University of Northern Iowa. She told a crowd gathered this morning at the State Historical Building that Americans have been very generous, but there's more work to be done. "As you go home, talk to you community leaders, to your church leaders, anybody," Sugira said. "You have a powerful voice and I urge you to use it. We can end poverty."

Sugira is a U.S. citizen now and will vote for the very first time in the coming election. "Back home there were many elections, but I wasn't given an opportunity to vote as a woman, so I hold it very, very precious for me to vote among you all," Surgira said. "I urge you to exercise your civic duty. It is a privilege."

Former Iowa Governor Terry Branstad said the "ONE Vote 08" campaign is calling attention to the scourge of diseases like AIDS and malaria as well as the extreme poverty that exists in other parts of the globe. "This is really a bipartisan effort to fight some of the biggest challenges we face in the world," Branstad said.

The ONE Campaign is asking presidential candidates to commit to doubling U.S. foreign aid from one percent of the federal budget to two percent.

Former Iowa Lieutenant Governor Sally Pederson said providing the basic elements of life -- food, vitamins and clean water -- can have a dramatic impact on children in Africa. "America is a great nation. We've accomplished great things historically," Pederson said. "I can think of no better imprint on history than being the generation that works to save millions of children from senseless death."

Over 20,000 Iowans have already signed up to be part of the ONE campaign. There's a new website for the group's latest effort to target presidential candidates: www.onevote08.org.

Bono, the lead singer of the band U2, may visit Iowa before the Caucuses to attract more attention to the effort. Nine presidential campaigns -- both Democrats and Republicans -- had booths at the ONE campaign event in Des Moines this morning.

Saw that in the paper. Funny how Bono is ALWAYS seen holding hands on beaches with gorgerous women, yet no-one ever dares to suggest he might be having an affair

If it was anyone else, they would be doomed :P

Gisele Bundchen to star in U2's next music video

(Aceshowbiz)

Updated: 2007-07-17 15:03

A supermodel, already acclaimed as the most famous and the highest-paid one in the world, Gisele Bundchen is trying her hand at acting. Not in big screen movie as she did in "Taxi" (2004), the beauty is about to star in the upcoming music video for U2's next song.

Gisele, who's claimed to be picky about the jobs she does, reportedly agreed to do the job after becoming friend with the music group's frontman, Bono, upon meeting him when she helped promote his charity RED campaign by appearing in the adverts for free.

While there has any official confirmation just yet, Gisele has just signed on to star in the film version on Dan Brown's bestselling "Angels & Demons", the prequel to the 2006 international smash "The Da Vinci Code" set for December 19, 2008 release date.

New vid? :o :cheer:

Wonder what it's for? :o

Oh and speaking of Angels & Demonds, apperently Tom hanks will get the biggest pay cheque in film history. :o

They probably don't even have a song yet. Just a video with Gazelle (or whatever she's called) in it.

I may be in a minority here but I loved the Da Vinci Code film. ^_^

Bono & Penelope Cruz Romance Questions Emerge

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By Angela Carson

Jul 29, 2007

Bono and Penelope Cruz raised eyebrows and questions when they spent the past week together on the French Riviera making eyes at each other and holding hands in public. The first inkling of the new relationship came when the unlikely couple partied the night away at a St Tropez nightclub before sharing a car home at 4am.

Bono & Penelope Cruz Romance Questions Emerge

Snappers caught them holding hands as they exited the club they cozied up and seemed lost in conversation as they were driven away. Earlier that day they had taken a boat at the Club 55 harbor in Saint Tropez. All of the "action" in public was caught on camera.

***

The Aussie telegraph notes that Bono has been married to the mother of his four children, environmental activist Ali Hewson, since 1982 and the couple have been widely credited with one of the strongest marriages in show business.

In the past Bono has referred to Hewson as his "rock'', and penned his hit The Sweetest Thing as an apology for once forgetting her birthday.

***

Still Penelope is known to be a big admirer of the U2 frontman and has spoken glowingly of him in the past, reports the Daily Mail. Back in September 2006 she told OK Magazine: "I'm very interested in following up all the work Bono is doing. He's so powerful and so human and seeing him investing all his time and effort is something to admire.

"He's definitely getting the message across - I think he's definitely changing the world."

Brown Pushes Development Plan at U.N.

By DAVID STRINGER

UNITED NATIONS - British Prime Minister Gordon Brown moved to build new international alliances for a fight against global poverty Tuesday, pressing nations, businesses and individuals to back ambitious plans to revive a stalled global development plan.

"It's time to call it what it is, a development emergency which needs emergency action," Brown said in a speech at the U.N. He pressed an audience of business leaders, non-governmental organizations and international delegates over failures in meeting the Millennium Development Goals.

Brown said he had won support from 12 world leaders and 20 leading businesses, including Microsoft Corp., Google Inc., and Wal-Mart to back his drive toward meeting the goals.

Achieving the standards would help the international community "eradicate the great evils of our time: illiteracy, disease, poverty, environmental degradation, underdevelopment," Brown said.

His call for a push on aid and diplomacy followed a two-day summit with President Bush, where the new British chief pledged support for military action in Iraq and Afghanistan and tough measures to tackle terrorism.

British officials have insisted Brown's foreign policy will be marked by his desire to mix the use of force and sanctions with backing for development and economic aid programs. Brown has called it a balance of "hard power and soft power."

His attempts to lead the international community in efforts to break an impasse on stalled world trade negotiations and on halting violence in Sudan's Darfur region are read by some as a bid to atone for predecessor Tony Blair's unpopular backing for the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

Officials said Brown hopes to harness the popular global support won by campaigns such as Make Poverty History and Live Earth to support his development drive.

A report card published earlier this month showed that progress toward achieving the benchmarks on reducing global poverty and increasing access to childcare and education, agreed to at a U.N. summit in 2000, was poor, Brown's aides said.

"We are off track on some of the goals," U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said. "Some say we will not make it, I say we still can."

Ban insisted the "goalposts cannot be moved," on meeting the targets by 2015.

A failure to meet the objectives would leave current world leaders "remembered as the generation that betrayed promises rather than honored them," Brown said in his speech.

Brown has held talks with U2 singer and anti-poverty campaigner Bono about the goals and plans to enlist businesses to help governments achieve the development goals, British officials said.

The prime minister's plan to corral industry, government, individuals and religious organizations would "summon into existence the greatest coalition of conscience in pursuit of the greatest of causes," he said.

Brown compared the plan to President Kennedy's 1960 call for a new international Peace Corps.

European leaders and heads of state from India, Japan, Ghana and Brazil are backing the project, Brown's office said.

President Bush was expected to give his consent later Tuesday after Brown outlined the plan during the weekend summit.

World leaders will meet for emergency talks on the development goals next year to discuss progress.

Brown also was hoping to win a first foreign policy success, with U.N. security council members expected to vote on a joint British-French resolution on Darfur within 24 hours.

The resolution calls for a hybrid U.N.-African Union peacekeeping force to begin deploying by October in an attempt to halt the fighting between ethnic African rebels and the pro-government janjaweed Arab militia in the western Sudanese region, and for peace talks to begin in Tanzania on Friday.

"It's no a slam-dunk, or in the bag, but we hope it will be voted on Tuesday afternoon," said a British official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government policy.

In his speech, Brown warned he would back new sanctions against the Sudanese government, if efforts to halt bloodshed in Darfur failed.

Former President Clinton held brief discussions with the British leader at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel on Monday evening about his U.N. speech and work to helping developing nations, Brown told reporters.

Bono-struck P. Diddy

BANG Showbiz

Jul. 31, 2007 08:27 AM

P. Diddy was star-struck when he met Bono last week.

The music mogul - real name Sean Combs - was blown away when he saw the U2 singer in hot St. Tropez nightspot Club 55, partying with Hollywood beauty Penelope Cruz.

A source said: "Diddy came over to their table and asked Penelope to take his picture with Bono. She ended up taking about five because Diddy kept asking her to take another one until he got one he liked."

The hip-hop star is sailing in the French Riviera with rapper Dr. Dre and has been enjoying the single life since his recent split from long-term girlfriend Kim Porter.

At a party a few nights later - while partying at the villa of Louis Roederer Champagne's Chief Executive, Jean-Claude Rouzaud - Diddy was seen canoodling with French supermodel Noemie Lenoir.

The couple left the party together in his white Maybach car.

Cruzing Along With Her Friends

MaryEllen Fillo | JAVA

August 1, 2007

You might have heard the other day how St.-Tropez gossips twittered over Bono and Penélope Cruz's hand-holding on a beach. We cautioned that Cruz is one of a group of friends on Bono's yacht and that his children are aboard. Now comes further word that his wife, Ali, is also on the holiday.

Saturday night, after partying on Diddy's yacht, the happy U2 family left together, leaving with Helena Christensen, Michael Stipe and John Galliano. Our spies did notice that Cruz stayed behind.

Rolling Stones, U2 with concert films this fall

Film Notes

July 31, 2007

The Rolling Stones and U2 will be storming movie theaters this fall in concert films that aim to please the eye as much as the ear.

When the Stones played New York's Beacon Theater last fall, Martin Scorsese brought in a small army of Oscar-winning and nominated cinematographers to capture the event for his film "Shine A Light." Robert Richardson, cinematographer for Scorsese's "The Aviator," supervised a formidable camera team that includes John Toll ("Braveheart"), Andrew Lesnie ("The Lord of the Rings" trilogy), Stuart Dryburgh ("The Piano"), Robert Elswit ("Good Night and Good Luck"), Emmanuel Lubezki ("Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events") and Ellen Kuras ("Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind").

Scorsese is a seasoned hand at music documentaries, most notably for The Band's memorable 1978 farewell, "The Last Waltz" and "No Direction Home: Bob Dylan." Soorsese's editor on the Bob Dylan film, David Tedeschi, will do cutting honors on "Shine a Light," which Paramount has scheduled for a Sept. 21 release.

Audiences will be able to reach out and touch Bono's hand in "U2 3D," an IMAX 3-D chronicle of the band's Vertigo tour of Latin America. A 56-minute preview of the 80-minute film was shown to great acclaim at the past Cannes Film Festival. Culled from seven different concerts in early 2006 by directors Catherine Owen and Mark Pellington, "U2 3D" will feature 15 songs. A firm autumn release date is pending.

Highest Fidelity

U2's new 3-D concert film is near perfect. Which is kind of a shame.

If the concert film is simply a non-narrative souvenir of a unique live experience, then directors Catherine Owens and Mark Pellington have reached the genre apex with U2 3D. Bono's hand reaches off the movie screen in an eerie technological benediction. The Edge threatens decapitation with his swinging guitar neck. Arenawide shots boast depth of field so realistic that your seat feels like a stadium bleacher. Impeccable close-ups offer intimacy usually reserved for VIP rock journalists and corporate sponsors. It's a mesmerizing, masterful film of musical performance. Is it worth watching? Absolutely. But is it worth remembering?

Think of Jimi Hendrix lighting his guitar on fire in D.A. Pennebaker's Monterey Pop (1968), the National Guard bringing in food and medical aid to the hippie crowd in the split-screen Woodstock (1970), or the crowd-control Hells Angels rampaging at Altamont Speedway in the Maysles brothers' Gimme Shelter (1970). The Last Waltz (1978) with the Band. Stop Making Sense (1984) with Talking Heads. These movies are products of directors who massage epiphany out of spectacle.

Fashion photographer Bert Stern virtually invented the concert film in 1960 with Jazz on a Summer's Day, a time capsule of the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival that immortalizes Anita O'Day, Louis Armstrong, Mahalia Jackson, and others using voluptuous, impressionistic camera work. He swaddled his reportage in a style that not only reflects the music but also downright illuminates it. U2 3D does the same thing (if briefly) during "The Fly," when swarms of platitudes scissor their way throughout the image, conflating JumboTron wizardry with the band's raw energy and creating a uniquely cinematic sequence.

Moments like that upgrade U2 3D from perfect to transcendent. Here's hoping the inevitable U2 3D: 2 has more of them.

Foolish Forecast: Whither Swings Marvel?

By Anders Bylund August 3, 2007

Tuesday morning ain't just a discount store -- it's also when we'll get the web-slinging second-quarter lowdown from Marvel Entertainment (NYSE: MVL). One Fool has donned his best Spandex to get the inside view of what to expect.

What analysts say:

Buy, sell, or waffle? Fourteen Wall Street firms cover the company. Four of them have a buy rating on the stock, one wants to sell, and the other nine are holding. In our Motley Fool CAPS database, Marvel's an on-again, off-again four-star stock, based on more than 930 user ratings.

Revenue. Management likes to stay attuned to long-term results, and it doesn't offer quarter-level guidance. Wall Street doesn't mind a shorter perspective, of course, and the current consensus points to about $109 million in net revenues. That's 30% better than last year's $84.4 million.

Earnings. $0.39 per share would satisfy the average analyst's demands, up from $0.19 a year ago.

What management says:

In the last earnings report, Marvel Chairman Morton Handel told us about a variety of ways in which the company will broaden its earnings base in the coming years. Here's one unexpected tidbit:

Work has also begun on Marvel's first Broadway project, with the development, by our licensee, of a Spider-Man musical led by director Julie Taymor. Music for the project is being created by Bono and The Edge of the rock band U2. Both initiatives will take several years to develop but are expected to support Marvel's core objectives.

What management does:

Here's a snapshot of Marvel's slow-and-steady margin decline from ancient times, including significant Spider-Man 2 contributions. That movie came out in June 2004, but the lucrative DVD release happened a bit later, and it still mattered to the December 2005 and March 2006 quarters on a trailing basis.

The uptick at the end was Nicholas Cage doing better than expected as Ghost Rider, along with strong licensing revenues and publishing results. Some of the merchandising licenses for Spider-Man 3 were accounted for in the last quarter, lowering their contributions to this one.

Penelope is very beautiful.... but B man...pls keep your pants on  Ali is your sweetest thing

No willy worries for U2 guitarist The Edge

- Rocker is all go in the down low

U2 guitarist The Edge is proud of his pen*s. :w00t:

The rocker - real name David Howell Evans - wasn't jealous when his bandmate Adam Clayton was chosen to show his member for the cover of Achtung Baby, because he is confident in his own appendage.

When asked is there was any pen*s envy within the group, The Edge replied: "No, I think we're all pretty confident in that department. I'm happy, yes."

The 46-year-old musician revealed he owns a staggering 365 hats.

He said: "I have 365 hats at the last count  , with 14 to 15 bandanas. My favourite one is a moleskin top hat that I wear on state occasions and when I'm driving my hearse. I keep them all in the hat wing of the house."

The Edge, who is married to dancer-and-choreographer Morleigh Steinberg, also claims he is a keen belly dancer.

He said: "She's shown me a few cool moves alright. But not in the belly-dancing department! There's some Japanese form, Butoh, that she studied which is interesting. I've gone to a few classes in Los Angeles.

"I'm obviously not very good. But it's pretty cool."

The couple - who married in 2002 - have two children together, a nine-year-old daughter, Sian Beatrice Echo, and a seven-year-old son, Levi.

The Edge also has three daughters with his first wife Aislinn O'Sullivan
