It just sounds like stereotypical thrash. No doubt some people will lap that up, but aside from a few songs of that nature, I've always thought Slayer were at their best when playing more structured, intelligent thrash, like on South Of Heaven and Seasons In The Abyss.

It's Slayer doing what Slayer are known for.... No-nonsense, full-on, fat-free Thrash Metal....

Question though - is this enough in a Metal scene in the 00s where the rules have been more-or-less re-written by bands such as Mastodon, Slipknot, Emperor, Opeth, Tool, Machine Head and Lamb of God....?

When I think about the last two Slayer albums soberly, setting aside the euphoria I felt about Dave Lombardo returning to the drum kit for "Christ Illusion", I have to conclude that the best of Slayer's 00s albums was indeed "God Hates Us All" which was certainly more intricate and varied than "Christ Illusion", and did take into account the changing attitude more....

I've heard absolutely blinding full-on Metal albums this year by Lamb of God, Mastodon and Devil Driver, so, the question is, can Slayer in '09 actually pass muster and compare to these....? On this evidence, I'm hearing a good enough Slayer song, but I just hear a lot more from these other bands in what they do with the genre as a whole....

Mastodon's album was a self-indulgent mish-mash of cliched riffs with no melody or groove to hold anything together. The concept was entirely ridiculous as well. It's progressive metal at it's poorest. All these people calling Mastodon the next Metallica, I can't even begin to contemplate that until Mastodon write a truly defining metal anthem, which they've still miserably failed to do.

IMO, Mastodon takes the metal genre to a different level.

Unpredictable and out-of-earth drummings and drum rolls and fresh sounding riffs are the unique attributes to the band.

Okay, the latest album may not have the catchiest, most memorable tunes (in fact, I've forgotten what from 'Quintessence' to 'The Last Baron' sounded like ), the album had a very different concept to the album. The other albums' ('Blood Mountain', 'Leviathan' and 'Remission') songs have a more "mainstream" structure/concept, which became easier to listen to.

That's so completely wrong I dont even know where to begin tbh.... "Crack the Skye" almost certainly takes more than one listen to really appreciate, which might be difficult for those who have the attention span of a braindead goldfish.... I've listened to this album about 20 times now and I still keep picking out something new, the riffs are fukkin' MONSTER.... As for Mastodon not writing a defining album - poppycock.... You've clearly never even listened to "Blood Mountain" or "Leviathan" have you....? But then, you seemed to think that the last "Guns N Roses" (which in reality was a fukkin' Axl Rose solo record) album was so sh!t hot.... Well, the first part is right, it was sure SH!T.....

I didn't think it was "$h!t hot" - I just thought it was a decent album that a lot of people slated without giving a chance. I could just as easily say it takes several listens to appreciate (which it does btw), but it's obvious you've just listened to it once - or at all?

And yes, I've listened to ALL of Mastodon's albums - I'm a music fan, I had to hear this new metal band everyone has been raving about. For me, they don't live up to the hype in the least. I'm sorry, but the riffs just sound a jumbled mess, there's no coherent structure. The main thing I don't like though is the vocals - not the style itself, but the fact they don't compliment the music in the least. They seem to be to an entirely different tune.

Don't get me wrong, Crack The Skye is not a terrible album, Mastodon are not a terrible band. I just think they've been hit by a hype train they don't live up to.

Believe me, I gave Chinese Democracy a good few listens, each time I hated it more and more.... Axl Rose is a pompous fukkin' arse who's just lost it totally, even if CD had dropped on us in '98 it still would've sounded hideously dated in the face of bands like Deftones, Slipknot, Korn, Tool, Fear Factory, Type O Neg, Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, etc; in the face of Machine Head, Mastodon, Dark Tranquility, Arch Enemy, Opeth, Lamb of God, Iron Maiden's second or third wind ("A Matter of Life and Death" - a superb album...), and Metallica's glorious return to form with 'Death Magnetic', it sounded even more pathetic, useless, irrelevant and LAMER....  It had no right to call itself a Guns N Roses record. PERHAPS I could have tolerated it slightly more as an Axl Rose solo record, but he chose not to call it that, he chose to pish on the legacy of his once great band... No Slash, No Izzy, No Duff, No Steve, no point, IMO....

Put it this way....

Metacritic:

Chinese Democracy - 64

Blood Mountain - 82

Crack The Skye - 82..

I rest my case..... If anything was "hyped" it was Chinese fukkin' Democracy and all the bullsh"t surrounding it for the best part of 15 years.... Mastodon deserve their good reviews, I've heard three albums of theirs and they're getting progressively better with each one, and live, they are absolutely astounding.... The footage I saw of Guns N Roses was frankly pathetic and a travesty of a once great band... Axl should be killed for dragging the once good name of Guns N Roses in the gutter.....

And Chinese Democracy wasn't hyped?

I am listening to it at the moment and I haven't heard such a bloated washed-up wreck of a once great band for a long long time.

Crack the Skye pisses all over this turd from a f***ing great height.

Illusion I and II were completely over-blown but they were fantastically so. And more importantly GnR were a band not the vehicle for one man's ego.

Spot on Grebo... Not that I was really a great fan of "Use Your Illusion" tbh... It was one perfectly decent album ill-advisedly stretched out into two rather mediocre ones, imo.... Bloated and utterly pompous, I thank god that Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Smashing Pumpkins, RHCP, RATM, Faith No More's "Angel Dust" record, etc, came along and just blew them out of the park totally.....

I just couldn't take G 'n' R seriously after listening to that lot..... And now, I just dont have any regard for Axl at all... He's a washed-up has-been dragging the name of his band through the mud....

For me, the only truly great Guns N Roses album is "Appetite for Destruction" - the work of a superb, young, hungry, totally pumped-up and exciting Rock band.... "Appetite..." was sorely needed to wash away the excesses of 80s Hair Metal, unfortunately, Axl then became subject the same sort of excesses and egocentricity....

Yeah, the same excesses which gave all-time classic tracks like 'Sweet Child O'Mine', 'November Rain' and 'Estranged'. Yes, Axl may be a looney, but people forget - the rest of the band ALL WENT ALONG WITH HIS IDEAS! It was only after the release of the Illusions records that the rest of the band really became disillusioned with the musical direction.

And it's not as if Slash, Izzy and co. have produced anything of GNR standard since they left the band. Velvet Revolver are good, but about 10% of the behemoth GNR were.

However, I agree wholeheartedly that Axl should NOT be using the Guns N' Roses name. I think it's a mistake that he'll live to regret for the rest of his life.

I'm sorry but the first Izzy Stradlin and the JuJu Hounds album is ten times the record that Chinese Democracy is.

That's only because it's a shameless Rolling Stones rip-off. Izzy didn't try anything even remotely new on that album.

Still better than Chinese Democracy. I mean that is really is a shining example of pushing against musical boundaries.

Well, the last two weren't even on "Appetite..."  And frankly, I cant fukkin' stand "November Rain".... That to me is the very nadir of just how cr@p G n R went..... A bloated, pompous, wanky "ballad".... Yeah, like I aint gonna prefer "Smells Like Teen Spirit", "Jesus Christ Pose", "Rhinocerous", "Jeremy" or "Would" to that bloated, cliched pile of sh!t.......

'November Rain' is a brilliant ballad IMO. And the video made it a lot better.

That was used to put people to sleep at night as well. :heehee:
