I'm very surprised by how poorly Fiona Apple's Grammy nominated Extraordinary Machine is ranked in the odds. I thought it was so different that it would go down well.

 

But obviously it is too musically & lyrically subtle for its own good.

 

Serves me right for nominated one of favourite songs of all time, from an artist who is not appreciated in the UK.

 

I do love Fiona Apple. Would have got my vote if I was in your semi. :(

I mean if Lenka can win, then surely a similar Jazz tinged track with a kooky clever lyric and a very subtly funny video (clue: Apple) should comfortably qualify?

 

To be honest there have been a few occasions when I thought I was sending something very touch and go to qualify for the Final.

 

But this semi Final is was not one of them, as I know how well this song was critically acclaimed and well received, so I thought it would go down well with the BJSC types, as I was amazed that Fiona Apple has never been entered before in the contest considering she is the head of the alternative post Lilith Fair female singer/songwriter movement from the USA.

one of my all time favourite singer's is the in my opinion very similar (to Fiona Apple that is) Sarah McLachlan, who would likely bomb in the BJSC...the only song I could think of hers that might do well is Stupid, but I still don't reckon it would have any chance of coming top ten :( anyway, I liked Extraordinary Machine on first listen, but I'm not in your semi

Fiona Apple is alright in my opinion. I adore the singles from Tidal, which I think would have suited you better in this competition (I was considering Criminal at one point to enter). Extraordinary Machine is a good song though, but not one of my favorites by her unfortunately. A hint for doing well in the BJSC: don't send critically acclaimed stuff ever unless it's Robyn. ;( Will not do well lawlz. BJSC favors songs that are enjoyable without much thought / deeper listening. Songs with a pop quality, even if they don't fall under the genre of pop. Not that it's a bad thing. I love good pop music. ;D I'm just not silly enough to enter something incredibly obscure and then moan when it doesn't do well.
