U2's 'Zoo' Expands For DVD Debut

August 11, 2006, 4:25 PM ET

Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

Originally released on VHS in 1994, U2's "Zoo TV -- Live From Sydney," will make its DVD debut Sept. 19 via Island/UME. The release will be available both as a single-disc version and a double-disc package with a host of extras.

The main body of the concert includes 23 songs and goes heavy on "Zooropa" album tracks such as "Lemon," "Numb," "Dirty Day" and "Daddy's Gonna Pay for Your Crashed Car" but also features a cover of Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling in Love" and vintage favorites such as "New Year's Day," "Angel of Harlem" and "Pride (In the Name of Love)." Throughout, the band performs avid a visual spectacle captured by 28 cameras.

The bonus disc features the previously unreleased songs "Trying To Throw Your Arms Around the World," "Desire," "The Fly" and "Even Better Than the Real Thing," three behind-the-scenes documentaries and even a karaoke version of the Edge-sung "Numb."

As previously reported, U2 will return to live duty Nov. 7 in Brisbane to make up a host of shows postponed last year. An early July email to members of U2.com's paid fan club broke the news that the band was back in the studio, although it is unknown at what point in the process the sessions are.

"ZOO TV LIVE FROM SYDNEY" ON DVD

‘U2 Zoo TV Live from Sydney’ will be released on DVD for the very first time by Island Records on September 18th. As well as the legendary live show, the new release comes with a bonus DVD, featuring live tracks, mini-documentaries and the famous Zoo TV "Interference".

Directed by David Mallet and filmed at the Sydney Football Stadium, Australia in November 1993, "Zoo TV Live From Sydney" has previously only been available on VHS.

From its dazzling opening moments featuring hundreds of video monitors, Zoo TV was an elaborate multi-media show designed by Willie Williams; inspired by the video age, cable TV chaff, 24 hour hard news - it set out to satirise the mid-90’s media overload.

Originally filmed on analogue video, the film has been transferred to a digital format with the pictures re-graded and cleaned. Great care has been taken to maintain the original look by simply enhancing it with an added degree of sharpness and contrast unavailable when originally filmed. The DVD also features PCM stereo, Dolby Digital 5:1 Surround Sound, and DTS 5:1 Surround Audio.

This DVD will be available in two formats, a single disc concert only set and a special double disc limited edition format featuring a bonus special features disc. This special features DVD includes never seen before footage from the "Video Confessional" - a room in the outdoor stadium where people went to announce their secrets to the world, alongside a series of mini documentaries including "Trabantland" and "A Fistful of ZOOTV" All of this and more…the bonus disc also features a number of surprises for the discerning U2 fan.
