John Hughes, film director who created The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off & other 80s classics http://bit.ly/18Kz0G Director John Hughes dies at 59 Helmer died of a heart attack By PAT SAPERSTEIN John Hughes, director of culturally significant films such as "The Breakfast Club," "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and "Planes, Trains and Automobiles," died suddenly today of a heart attack while taking a morning walk during a trip to Manhattan. He was 59. John Wilden Hughes, Jr., born on Feb. 18, 1950 in Michigan, began as an advertising copywriter in Chicago. In the last decade, he stepped back from the legacy he created to enjoy time with his family, maintain a functioning farm in northern Illinois and support independent arts. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Nancy, two sons, John and James, and four grandchildren.
August 6, 200915 yr Author John Hughes films include The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Pretty In Pink, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Planes, Trains & Automobiles, Weird Science, so many great films R.I.P. :(
August 6, 200915 yr RIP, you played a big part of my adolescence with some of my favourite films ever.... oGawOk107eU OMD - If You Leave (Pretty In Pink OST  ) - before La Roux murders this song. Although am I the only one who hated Home Alone?
August 6, 200915 yr Author RIP, you played a big part of my adolescence with some of my favourite films ever.... oGawOk107eU OMD - If You Leave (Pretty In Pink OST  ) - before La Roux murders this song. Although am I the only one who hated Home Alone? I wasn't a big Home Alone fan either, but i loved his 80s films...The Breakfast Club, Pretty In Pink, etc great films.
August 7, 200915 yr This is really sad news actually, and so sudden as well... For those like myself and Richard (ie, BJers of a certain generation), we kind of grew up with Hughes' films and they played a significant part in our teenage years - Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Pretty In Pink (which he wrote, not directed), were pretty damn significant films and a significant cut above the usual bland Teen fare, I can certainly still enjoy these films even now, even though they were very much of their time... I fell hopelessly in love with Molly Ringwald because of him.....  IMDb celebrates him as "The Bard of Teen Angst"... Surely no more fitting a tribute than this.... We'll, er, just forget about "Home Alone"......
August 7, 200915 yr WOAH, Ferris Bueller's Day Off one of my favourite films ever, sad news. Top Man Chris... Good to see his films kind of crossing over the generations..... Ferris Bueller's Day Off is probably Hughes' best film in a lot of ways.... Here's a very amusing review of Ferris Bueller as a character.... Basically, the author puts across the argument that Ferris is actually a psychopath-in-training.....  Mind you, he seems to back up his claims pretty soundly.... http://www.ruthlessreviews.com/5911/ferris...-misunderstood/
August 7, 200915 yr I loved The Breakfast Club, I'm gonna playing ''Don't You Forget About Me'' on loop in tribute :(
August 7, 200915 yr We'll, er, just forget about "Home Alone"...... Well I actually liked Home Alone II (its the Tim Curry line 'do bundle up ... its rather cold outside' that did it for me). Besides ... after Curly Sue (after which Hughes never directed again) HA is positively Oscar material! Personally the man who directed Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Uncle Buck is well worth doffing one's cap to! Not to mention his involvement in the National Lampoon Vacation films (Christmas being my favourite) and the aforementioned Pretty In Pink (my personal favourite of that 'teen' genre film) and FBDO. RIP Looking at his pictures on IMDb - he's a ringer for Stephen King! Norma

August 7, 200915 yr Curly Sue Cheers Norma... I had actually successfuly forgotten about that one.....
August 7, 200915 yr I feel really sad. His films, as Grimly said, formed such a big part of my adolescence. I think I did wear out my copy of The Breakfast Club I saw it so many times. And it made me fall in lust with Ally Sheedy (Not Molly!) So many good films. Think I'll be giving The Breakfast Club another airing tonight.
August 7, 200915 yr Haaaah my friend -made- me watch FBDO when I was midway through my first year at Uni. It spoke to me on so many levels because at the end of the day, if I see a boundary, I eat a boundary, and wash it all down with a hot steaming cup of rules.
August 7, 200915 yr And it made me fall in lust with Ally Sheedy (Not Molly!) In my adolescence, I dreamt about a "three-way" with Ally Sheedy and Molly Ringwald.....   But Ally would be the diiiiirty shag behind the bike sheds, Molly I'd romance..... Teenage lust, eh....?

The first time I saw her was in a brilliant made for tv film called 'Packin' It In' - about a family that tries to escape the mad hustle and bustle of city life to 'go country' only to find themselves surrounded by people just as bad ... and survivalists. This was one of the first 'tv' films I'd seen with an absolutely stella cast - Richard Benjamin, Paula Prentiss, Kenneth MacMillan and Tony Roberts (Tony Roberts especially - him being Woody Allen's long-standing film partner - he was also the original Mayoral Assistant in the original Pelham 1-2-3). If you get a chance to see this film (Packin' It In) give it a go - its well worth it. Norma Edited August 7, 200915 yr by Norma_Snockers
August 7, 200915 yr Author Here's an interesting blog, about a fan who kept in touch since writing a fan letter, and also gives an insight into why he left Hollywood at the end. Quite touching. http://wellknowwhenwegetthere.blogspot.com...ohn-hughes.html
