A PREGNANT woman jailed for drug trafficking in Laos described her ordeal as an “unimaginable nightmare” on her return to the UK today.

Samantha Orobator, who escaped the death penalty because she is pregnant, said in a statement: “I am enormously relieved and happy to be back on British soil.

"It has been an unimaginable nightmare.

“I would like to thank all those who were involved in my return, including various British Government officials, for their efforts on my behalf, and for their support.

“Meanwhile, I would be grateful for a little peace as this has been a very traumatic experience both for me, and for my unborn child.”

The 20-year-old was given permission to serve the rest of her prison sentence in the UK and returned home today in time to give birth to her child, which is due next month.

Am I the only person repulsed by the sight of this grinning woman being returned to British soil yesterday, to languish at British taxpayers expense?

This is a drugs trafficker, a fact even her mother could not deny when interviewed.

She intentionally impregnated herself, in prison, with help from another prison inmate to avoid the death penalty she had received.

And now we are supposed to be happy that she is back, for a "life sentence" which means little here, in a mother and baby unit at Holloway, at our, no doubt, vast expense.

If we argue for the hacker to be prosecuted under our laws - then surely she should be prosecuted under the laws of the country she committed the offence in??

How do you know she is a drug trafficker? Her trial - including deliberating over the verdict - lasted 30 minutes. She was only questioned by the prosecution. Her defence team were not able to ask her anything. Before the trial she was never allowed to talk to lawyers in private.

At the time she became pregnant her trial was expected to take place in August next year so the suggestion that she deliberately got pregnant to avoid the death penalty doesn't stack up. Even if she did, are you telling me you wouldn't do whatever it takes to avoid facing a firing squad?

I've been to Laos. It's a lovely country. But their judicial system falls woefully short of international standards.

Riiiiiight.. So, the Govt will fight the corner of a drug trafficking piece of sh!t who was totally aware of her actions and even went so far as to get herself impregnated to escape her just desserts in Laos, and yet the Govt will do nothing to help a guy with Asperger's be extradited to the States when he committed his crimes here, and it would actually be infringing on his human rights as an EU citizen to be put into an institution where his needs likely couldn't be met as he has a mental condition (Supermax prisons aren't exactly known for their humanitarian regimes)....

Nice to see this Govt has its priorities right - if you're a fraudster responsible for embezzling billions, or a drug trafficker who gets herself knocked up, the Govt will fight for you, if you're some poor b'astard with a mental condition, then sod you..... <_<

I think it says something how much this Labour Govt has screwed up that you and I are in agreement with "Daily Mail man".

Oh so you think she got a fair trial?

Oh so you think she got a fair trial?

Put it this way she was about as innocent as Ronnie Biggs.

This was the classic UK teenager abroad agreeing to carry a suitcase/bag by a stranger for money through customs stitch up.

I'm getting fed up about how every fukkin' time a stupid teenager does this drug trafficking abroad, the bleeding hearts do gooders always assume they are innocent and are victim of a miscarriage of justice.

It is precisely this superiority complex that hacks off the rest of the world.

As the old Nu Labour manifesto really should go "Soft on crime, soft on the causes of crime, unless the US Government wants to make an example of you"

Isn't it great that the UK taxpayer can now pick up the bill for her stay in UK jails (£30K+ per year + the baby that she cynically had to avoid being shot dead). :arrr:

Sorry mate, but she did this in a country that have shot dead 39 drug traffickers since 2003. Therefore, as I believe in when in Rome ..... then she should have faced the firing squad.

I'm not saying she's innocent. I have no idea whether she's guilty or not. Unless you have a contact within the Lao police neither do you. Her trial lasted 30 minutes. How can such a short trial possibly be considered even close to being almost a little bit fair? Everyone, no matter what they are accused of, deserves a fair trial. She didn't get one. That's not being a bleeding heart Liberal (although I consider the term do-gooder to be a compliment considering what the opposite of do-gooder is), it's simply being in favour of justice.

She should have been executed to set an example that you do not f*** about and bring drugs into countries

I am old enough to remember Patricia Cahill and Karen Smith too who were caught with 32kg of heroin in Bangkok and the government of the time (Major) bent over backwards to secure their release and there has been several cases since

People are prepared to risk it because they know the government will bail them out so it is time one of them was executed to make an example of them to every idiot that is prepared to drug deal

I know you like to make provocative statements but the idea that someone should be executed on the basis of a 30 minute trial is totally abhorrent. I assume that notwithstanding your opposition to abortion you would happily have killed her unborn baby too. Her trial can't even be described as a kangaroo court as that would be unfair to kangaroos (although given what's happening in the cricket maybe that's not such a bad idea).

How many have happened over the years ? dozens, they can't all be stitch ups

There seems to be an automatic assumption in this country that anyone in a foreign prison who is British their $h!t smells of roses and they have been fitted up by nasty old Johnny Foreigner, there has been dozens of cases of young mostly but not exclusively girls carrying drugs into the golden triangle

Even her own mum agrees that she was guilty mate

Exactly.

This British Government should make it abundantly clear to young people that you do not travel to these countries, unless you are prepared for the consequences. I mean WTF was she doing in a communist despot country like Laos in the first place.

I cannot be the only one who finds it disgusting how a succession of Labour and Conservative governments are happy to bail out these stupid people; whilst short changing law abiding tax payers.

I haven't said whether I think she's guilty or not. I have no idea. Whatever the truth is, a 30 minute trial is not the way to find it.

As for whether she should serve her sentence her, it works both ways. Yes, we will now bw paying for her upkeep in a British prison. However, there are plenty of people convicted in Britain who are serving their sentences in their home country. Making people serve their sentence in the country where the offence was committed punishes the family as well as the prisoner. Why do you think that is a good idea?

They are showing complete disregard for their family when they are carrying heroin into countries that they know carries the death penalty

Someone would have to spent their entire life living on the moon not to know that if get caught drug trafficing in places like Thailand, Malaysia, Laos, Burma it is punishable by death, they take that risk by flying out there to make good money so they have to be willing to accept the consequences if they get caught

They don't give a damn about their families of the families of those who will be affected by the heroin they import

So because, in your view, some people don't care about their families, noone else should? And you're still assuming that the result of a 30 minute trial is the truth.

She is clearly guilty as hell

Her tour itinerary was Amsterdam (drug capital of Europe), Bangkok (an integral part of the golden triangle) and Laos (unlikely ever to appear on the BBC Holiday program) those 3 places she went to are the drug capitals of the world along with maybe Ghana

And she can plead no real defence, I fly regularly over the years and every time at check in/security I am asked if I packed my bag myself and did anyone else pack it for me, by saying YES I packed it myself I am taking full and complete responsibility for the contents of my case/hand luggage so anyone that answers yes has no real defence if anything dodgy is in the suitcase

Well, I've visited all three (including flying from Bangkok to Laos) so maybe I should hand myself in now.

And I was in Bangkok in January, and I remember clearly at check in being asked if I packed my bags myself and did I know anyone that could have had access to my bag and I said yes I had packed it myself and that no one else had access to it, had I after saying I packed my bags been caught in Bangkok with drugs it would have been my tough $h!t and I would deserve no sympathy and would expect the full weight of the local law, I of course didn't carry any drugs but it is a 100% certainty that this girl was asked the SAME questions as me so its her tough titties that she got caught, the suitcase fairy didn't put drugs in her suitcase mate she did it herself or knowingly accepted a package which she put in her case

You're still ignoring my main point. Her trial lasted 30 minutes. How can anyone (you, me or anyone else) have the remotest idea what is the truth based on such a joke of a trial?

Well if she was asked why the drugs were in her case, when the airport staff found them and she didn't have a good reason, she is guilty, that would take about 5 minutes in my book. Why should a trial last for days on end, the defence pulling out dozens of witnesses to say "oh she was such a good child" or "she has been suffering from stress" blah de blah. If you ask me our country could learn something by reducing the length of court cases.

Everyone knows if you get caught smuggling drugs in this part of the world what the consequences are, ignorance is not an excuse anymore.

Oh for goodness sake, just think about it for a moment. Her defence team didn't even get the opportunity to challenge any of the evidence. Maybe we should adopt the same idea but take it just one step further. Let's do away with trials altogether and just assume that anyone arrested must be guilty. Think of the money we'd save.
