Just what is it you have against Bob Marley? You can hardly call his songs dirges!

And why is it that people like Dio who sang on Neon Knights. Bloody poison dwarf. Heaven and Hell is a $h!t album and I will never understand why anyone likes it.

cant stand his music... 'could you be loved' IS a dirge imho...it just plods on , his brand of music doesnt reprisent my life at all in any way. and rastafarianism is the most ridiculous religion ever invented!

So you don't like any reggae at all then or is it just Bob Marley?

Norma

^^

Norma: Yellow Magic Orchestra - Computer Games (Theme From Invaders) wasn't the theme from a TV programme but literally the theme from the computer game "(Space) Invaders"! Quite a different song and needless to say it only received any radio play on the Top 40 show on a Sunday...

This is the 12" version - the 7" edited version starts at 1:50 in.

again, can someone tell me how to embed a youtube video straight to here. I can never remember.

not a bad chart. I owned the following:

2 David Bowie - Ashes To Ashes

6 The Gap Band - Oops Upside Your Head (12")

9 The Jam - Start

13 Odyssey - Use It Up And Wear It Out (12")

21 Grace Jones - Private Life

27 The Undertones - Wednesday Week

39 New Musik - Sanctuary

In addition, a number of the songs in this chart, most of them varying in degrees of awfulness were on the then latest K-Tel compilation which I owned. The album had the awful title of "Mounting Excitement", which is probably one of the worst album titles K-Tel ever dreamt up.

And what a pile of sh/te it was! Glad I didn't recall it! And thank you radio stations at the time for keeping it from my eardrums! Once a week would have been once to many to hear this tripe!

So happy they didn't make a tart's boudoir out of the brilliant TV series then!

Just as well one of YMO went on to bigger and better things coz Ryuichi Sakamoto frequently makes great music.

Top 40 Hits of Mid August 1980

1 Abba - The Winner Takes It All - one of their greatest - a truly brilliant pop single, and Agnetha looks hot in the video, even with blue eyeshadow

2 David Bowie - Ashes To Ashes - my fave Bowie track by miles, and from his best album, too, IMO

3 Diana Ross - Upside Down - Great... production on this is incredible.

5 Roxy Music - Oh Yeah (On The Radio) not their finest, but still a great song

9 The Jam - Start as above.... but is there ever a bad Jam single?

10 The Piranhas - Tom Hark - fun and daft, but holds some memories

12 Kelly Marie - Feels Like I'm In Love - ugly Scottish cow, but a fun disco track, even if her voice could shatter eardrums...

13 Odyssey - Use It Up And Wear It Out - don't know why, but I liked this

15 Electric Light Orchestra - All Over The World - as above

16 Kate Bush - Babooshka - one of her worst singles, but as with the Jam, is there ever a bad Kate Bush single? Clever video, though

17 Bad Manners - Lip Up Fatty - gotta love ole Buster and his Boys

20 Bob Marley & The Wailers - Could You Be Loved - classic, really love this one, great bassline, too

21 Grace Jones - Private Life - the ice queen descends on nation al consciousness - and has there ever been a cooler TOTP performance? Astonishingly brilliant.

24 Olivia Newton-John & Electric Light Orchestra - Xanadu - trashy junk.... but great trashy junk. The Xanadu movie is awful, too.... but a must-see awful movie!

25 The Clash - Bankrobber - one of their weakest singles, but still a great one... kinda shows how great they were, doesn't it?

26 Sue Wilkinson - You Gotta Be A Hustler If You Wanna Get On - an overlooked classic - I LOVED this track and annoyed my parents with it no end as a kid singing it!

27 The Undertones - Wednesday Week - a long way from their best, but it was nice to see them in a mellower mood

28 Darts - Let's Hang On - loved Darts - whatever happened to vocal powerhouse Rita Ray? Awesome voice...

29 Ultravox - Sleepwalk - when Ultravox were great - love this.

31 Billy Joel - It's Still Rock And Roll To Me - hate him, but gotta give him a thumbs-up on this track

33 Bow Wow Wow - C30 C60 C90 Go - superb.... loved Bowwowwow

34 Yellow Magic Orchestra - Computer Game (Theme From 'the Invaders') - YMO.... surely they and Kraftwerk invented leftfield electronica as we know it

36 Joan Armatrading - Me Myself I - so did she or didn't she have a bit of Valerie Singleton, then? Like this a lot.

38 The Skids - Circus Games - even though he danced like he was having a fit, Mr Jobson released some great tunes with The Skids... shame about Big Country afterwards, tho... minus Mr J.

39 New Musik - Sanctuary - liked this one

40 Stacy Lattisaw - Jump To The Beat - a classic.... would hate to hear it now, tho!

some classics there, gotta be said.... you know you have strange childhood memories? One of mine if the week after this, Bowie knocked ABBA off the number one slot.... and I remember listening to the cgart rundown at the Radio One roadshow in Porthcawl. This has to be one of the greatest top 3s in living memory - 2 of my all-time favourite records in the top 2 positions....

SUE WILKINSON - YOU'VE GOT TO BE A HUSTLER IF YOU WANNA GET ON

In this age of shabby prostitutes posing as footballer's wives and girlfriends, reality TV show ho's and tacky tarts like Jordan, Paris Hilton et al... has there EVER been a better time to hear this?

YOU'VE GOTTA BE A HUSTLER IF YOU WANNA GET ON

Sue Wilkinson - 1980

I remember Sally from number four

She always had boys queueing up at her door

She wasn't so good looking, but she seemed to have such fun

While I had none, I asked my Mum, "How come?"

Mother said Sally was loose and cheap

And girls like that ended up on the street

Not like me, I was good, you see

Now I saw Sally in the deli today

She's a lady now in every way

So darn rich, people tell me she's a witch

With lovers by the score, do I have to tell you more

Oh, you've got to be a hustler if you want to get on

Principles can only hold you back

The only women makin' it are women who are shakin' it

They're faking all their morals on the mat

It's an act, it's a fact

You've got to be a hustler if you want to make a name

Bein' good can only get you hurt

Chastity and virtue never brought a woman fame

And men will always crave a cunning flirt

When you read the newspapers every day

There's always some hussy that's having her way

By dating someone famous, she makes herself a name

And no one blames her, I guess we'd all do the same

But then they get married and before you know

She wants divorce and half of his dough

Gets herself a lawyer who's a really shrewd guy

And get's the judge's sympathy by crying and crying

Yes, you've got to be a hustler if you want to get on

Principles can only hold you back

The only women makin' it are women who are shakin' it

They're faking all their morals on the mat

It's an act, it's a fact

You've got to be a hustler if you want to make a name

Bein' good can only get you hurt

Chastity and virtue never brought a woman fame

And men will always crave a cunning flirt

Well, the next time it happens as she starts to write

Of her schemes through the days and her men through the nights

And even though it's tasteless, the book sells coast to coast

On all the chat shows, you can see her boast

And now they're makin' a film of the book

And no one gives a damn that the girl was a "Huh"

They've got posters obscene, now she's mixin with the cream

No one even cares what she's done or where she's been

Ooh, you've got to be a hustler if you want to get on

Principles can only hold you back

The only women makin' it are women who are shakin' it

They're faking all their morals on the mat

It's an act, it's a fact

You've got to be a hustler if you want to make a name

Bein' good can only get you hurt

Chastity and virtue never brought a woman fame

And men will always crave a cunning flirt

Yes, you've got to be a hustler if you want to get on
