Showbiz 411 colunmist Roger Friedman, an extended member of Mariah Carey's PR team, continues to serve up information about to expect from the diva's forthcoming 'Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel' album - today confirming that Foreingers cover 'I Want To Know What Love Is' will be the record's 'first official single' (rolls eyes).

Just to be anal I've edited your post since this is the second single as opposed to the 'first'. Obsessed isn't a buzz single. I know Roger Friedman implies that in his article but he says we'll "hear the album and single on September 29th", and if it isn't being heard until then it obviously isn't the new 'lead' single. Hope you don't mind about the edit. :P

 

Can't WAIT to hear this. It sounds like it's the perfect song for her to cover. Tricky Stewart and Big Jim Wright's production should be epic.

I'm a little un-easy about the news of this release, but who knows, it could really smash. I'm just dying to hear the full record now.

As long as this era does something, Obsessed has been around forever and not done too much, I must admit I'm kind of dissapointed its a cover version but still the rave reviews are a good sign.

"Bye Bye" created the same kind of reaction, so I'm not getting my hopes up. Plus, "I Want To Know What Love Is" is one of my most hated songs of all time, but I won't shoot it down until I've heard her rendition.

Mariah's 2nd single, "I Want To Know What Love Is," will reportedly premiere at radio after Labor Day (Sept. 7). A firm date has yet to be announced.

This is apparently premiering on radio across Germany at 6am tomorrow (that's 5am UK time). 10 hours!

I don't think it sounds dated. Does sound good. I think it'll be a whispery first chorus, power second chorus a la Fly Like A Bird.

I was a bit disappointed with the song Vocally until the final chorus kicked in and she just goes BAM! Which is what i wanted. Just before the final chorus came in, i was like Oh Mariah :( This was your chance to get back to the 90s goodness, and then it kicked in and then i was like OH MARIAH <3 but less orgasmic than it sounds :lol: but her voice does still sound a bit strained..

Yeah vocally this is an interesting one because she had adlibs much less strained on some E=MC2 songs but emotionally these are her best vocals in just about forever, she sounds like she's HURTING which is obviously a good thing, it's an emotional song.

 

I'd give it a 9/10 for now, in radio rip form. My only criticisms are that it's quite short so I hope this was just a radio edit - the original is like five minutes - and that the key change is so big it's kind of jarring. And I don't think it's radio-friendly. But regardless of how well it may or may not do as a single it's a great song. Mariah has a very good eye for what to cover and she's done this justice.

Apparently this might just be a European single, I'm really not sure on it. It sounds alright but it doesn't sound like a single, its too short and personally I feel it lacks the emotion of some of her better songs.

As expected (being a power ballad WHORE), I FACKING LOVE IT! I think it really is emotional as Jark says, the key change is a bit drastic but I think it works. I don't think this is just an edit though, I think this is the whole thing, remember all of the listening parties said it seemed to end a bit quickly?

I noticed the ballads on the last album seemed to end really quickly as well. Especially I Stay In Love. It was like, as soon as the song really begun, and Mariah was ad-libbing all over the place in her MAJORLY POWERFUL voice, the music started to fade.

I really like this! As what everyone else has said, the last chorus is definitely the best bit. But it is very short.
