1979, 25 years after his first UK No.1 single Cliff Richard had his 10th chart topper with 'We Don't Talk Anymore' his first No.1 for eleven years.

1979, The Knack started a five week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'My Sharona', the group's only US chart topper, a No.6 hit in the UK. Lead singer Doug Fieger said he was inspired to write the tune by Sharrona Alperin, a 17 year old senior at Los Angeles' Fairfax High.

well according to 'on this day' cliff reached #1 today, not last week as the chart i posted suggests.

we had the knack 'my sharona' in last nights music quiz :)

well cliff held off the gary numan attack, bugger! lol and elo climbed significantly.... why ill never know!

some very interesting new entries this week... punk with the uk subs and the ruts making the top 50, and nice too see kate bush entering too. squeeze with one of their best 'slap n tickle' at #33 whilst the jags 'back of my hand' gets in too.

noteable though are the tourists 'lonliest man in the world' starting out on annie/daves chart run with another 80's stalwart group, madness, debuting @#37.

rainbow too with 'since youve been gone' adding rock into the chart... which is a great chart, full of variety!

the tourists 'lonliest man in the world'

madness 'the prince'

squeeze 'slap and tickle'

kate bush 'them heavy people'

jags 'back of my hand'

whatever happened to the jags?.... seemed a fair group, should have had more hits..

I liked all the new entries, especially Madness & Squeeze. The Jags were a very short lived band, think they only had 3 singles but really only 1 hit. Does anyone else think the song sounds like an Elvis Costello one?

1979, The film Quadrophenia was released. Based on The Who’s 1973 rock opera the film featured Phil Daniels, Toyah Willcox, Ray Winstone, Michael Elphick and Sting.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

saw this film and thoughroughly enjoyed it. the timing was perfect as the nations mood was right for a 60's revival and with the emerging two tone and new wave scenes pandering to the 60's nostalgia circus made this a huge hit. 'mods' were back in fashion (but in truth they never went away, as mod = modernist, or a person indulging in current modern fashion.... but mod seems now to be fixed as a mid 60's-esque style)

well gary numan got to the top eventually, but for how long? the highest new entry, 'message in a bottle' by the police is storming up the charts to eventually top them.

the second highest new entry was from the 'future king of pop'... NOT! with one of his better tracks 'dont stop till you get enough'.. the aptly named status quo were the third highest new enrty with the boring, bland 'whatever you want'..

well what a mixture of new entries, some good, (blondie, buggles) some bad (dr hook, lena martell) and some in between (sad cafe). personally my fav new entry was the charlie daniels band 'the devil went down to georgia' ... im partial to abit of fiddle playing!

blondie were the 'in' group wiith a huge new entry, although tbh it was not one of my favs as they drift into their disco phase.

the police had their first #1, and the rather prophetic 'video killed the radio star' by a decent producer, trevor horn, added abit of classy pop.

the rather odd 'ok fred' also entered the charts...but wtf was/is a 'yagga yagga'?

1979, Scottish guitarist Jimmy McCullough died from a heroin overdose in his flat in Maida Vale, London, aged 26. Member of Stone The Crows, Thunderclap Newman and Wings (1974 to 1977). When ‘Something in the Air’ by Thunderclap Newman went to No.1 in 1969 it made McCulloch the youngest guitarist to ever play on a UK No.1 single, he was sixteen years old at the time.
well what a mixture of new entries, some good, (blondie, buggles) some bad (dr hook, lena martell)

3 of these songs will eventually get to number 1, and Blondie is not one of them :o Worse of all 2 of them will be number 1 and number 2 for 3 weeks and its not Buggles <_<

:puke2:, they started out interesting, but by 'rivers of babylon' were pure cheese, and thats NOT a good thing.
