August 29, 200915 yr Times have changed though with the internet. Bands can be HUGE and never have a charting song. Radiohead sell out huge stadiums in the US yet had only a minor hit on the US Rock Charts with a single from In Rainbows. If you're expecting something completely NEW, you're going to be out of luck. At least something new in the complete mainstream music scene. You can't really create a new sound now; if you wanted completely new music, it would have to be made by someone who had never heard music before. (Also, I did say "which are two relatively recent genres that have been developing. They're not necessarily new by any means but all music is based on older music, a solid progression with some new changes"). All music is influenced by other music. The bands you listed had influences. People have been reviving a lot of older genres lately though and creating new interesting scenes. The indie scene of today is almost like one giant youth movement, you could be surprised what you can find if you just looked. You're out of luck if you're just going to look in the Top 40.

Oh, I'm fully aware of what Radiohead (and Nine Inch Nails, who absolutely upped Radiohead's ante, IMO, and they've not exactly been bothering the charts for a good while now...) did with regards to Internet music, the Net is almost certainly a good thing for acts, it's better for artists than it is for record companies..LOL.... And, I most certainly WOULD rather go to little intimate gigs around Camden, North London (my patch..), etc, than anywhere else.... It's all very well to revitalise old genres, and I do enjoy the nights out I have, and have gotten to know a lot of younger bands on the scene, but ultimately, it's a case of "all been done before" innit...?

Don't you think that's just a matter of age? The likes of you and I are old enough to remember the bands who influenced many of today's musicians. Earlier this decade there were a whole host of bands who had obviously been listening to their parents' Joy Division albums. A few years on we are now getting acts influenced by early eighties electro-pop. To many teenagers all these bands will have sounded fresh and new. To those of us not quite so young, it had all been done before.
August 29, 200915 yr Personally I don't give a flying one if it's all been done before as long as the music sounds good. And I am old enough to remember a lot of the bands the first time around.

To those of us not quite so young, it had all been done before. influences/revivals are as old as music itself, the mid 70's was littered with rock n roll revivalists bringing old sounds to a new generation.... punk opened the door for a '60's revival' which ultimately influenced original indie.. and of course 'original' (older) fans of any style pretty much derided the 'new' version... so in all, nothing new there then! Personally I don't give a flying one if it's all been done before as long as the music sounds good. And I am old enough to remember a lot of the bands the first time around. i agree ....
August 30, 200915 yr The question is though - "is there an age limit on songwriting talent..."? And, I would say, that some (such as U2, Sting, etc...) should give up because they've utterly lost it.... But others (such as Depeche Mode, Metallica, The Cure, The Killing Joke, etc) have clearly still got their mojo and the hunger to continue to do good music... And it IS a fact that the standards are still being set by the good older bands who've still "got it", Metallica doing that great album last year has led to a lot of the younger Metal bands having something to aim for, the competition to be "Bigger Than Metallica" is really heated up in the past year, and it's led to some quite astounding Metal albums in the past 12 months, and now Megadeth and Slayer (Metallica's contemporaries) have upped their game in response.... The effect of "Death Magnetic" has been incredibly positive on the Metal scene, so, the likes of Metallica, Maiden, etc, shouldn't just "quit" merely because they're in their 40s, that's just absolute cr@p as far as I'm concerned.....
