But new Pink suddenly looks out of fashion

Pink's featured single, 'Stupid Girls,' and its CD have sold poorly.

Chalk up another win for the dumbing down of everything.

Recently, smarty-pants singer Pink offered her witty critique of our culture's most celebrated airheads - from Paris Hilton to Lindsay Lohan - in her astringent single "Stupid Girls." The result got her gobs of press attention, and even won her a bully pulpit on an installment of Oprah.

Unfortunately, it now looks like the goofballs are having the last laugh. Pink's latest CD, "I'm Not Dead," just plunged out of the top 100 after 10 weeks in play, with sales of only 374,633.

"Dead" will have trouble enlivening those numbers anytime soon since it currently has no major radio play. "Stupid's" followup single (the equally appealing "Who Knew?") has yet to chart.

Pink had several things going against her before the CD was even released. (Ergo the "I'm Not Dead" title). Her last CD, 2003's "Try This," sold a flaccid 707,000 copies, a plummet from her peak in 2001 with "Missundazstood," which moved 5.2 million.

It's hard to say exactly why Pink has had trouble getting back into the black. Both "Try This" and "Dead" boast terrifically catchy pop songs, sung with more verve than most any other young female singer today. Better, the song "Stupid Girls" started with a commercial bang, racing up to No. 13 on Billboard's Hot 100 Song list, and breaking into the top 10 on the Digital download chart. Unfortunately, it seems the song has come to be seen as a novelty number, a ditty geared more to spark chatter than sales.

Ironically, a deeper reason for Pink's swoon may have to do with her greatest point of distinction: her credible rock character. All the females who sell huge these days owe some allegiance to either R&B, dance music or "American Idol" (see: Kelly Clarkson). Funnily enough, Pink started out belting commercial R&B, but abandoned it by her second CD.

Who knew?
