Amazing story. Bundled in to a car aged 11 and walks in to a police station aged 29. DNA has proved that it is her. A paedophile and his wife are in custody so she must have gone through hell. Suppose it gives the McCanns some hope!

More on this.....

A US woman found after being abducted as a girl in 1991 gave birth to two children fathered by her alleged kidnapper - the first when she was 14.

Jaycee Lee Dugard and her daughters, 11 and 15, were kept in a "hidden backyard within a backyard", police say.

Alleged kidnapper Phillip Garrido, 58, and his wife Nancy Garrido, 54, are being held in custody in California.

DNA tests are being done to establish Ms Dugard's identity, but meanwhile she has been reunited with her mother.

"She was in good health, but living in a backyard for the past 18 years does take its toll," El Dorado County Undersheriff Fred Kollar said.

Ms Dugard disappeared in 1991, aged 11, apparently taken by two people who bundled her into a car.

Mr Kollar said that since the kidnapping she had lived with the couple, isolated from view at a property in Antioch near San Francisco, 170 miles (273km) from her home in South Lake Tahoe.

"The tents and outbuildings in the backyard were placed in a strategic arrangement to inhibit outside viewing and to isolate the victims from outside contact."

She and the children spent "most of their lives" there, he said, adding that they had never been to school or seen a doctor.

Their identities were revealed after police spotted Mr Garrido as he handed out religious literature at the University of California Berkeley campus with the two young children.

He raised suspicions because as a registered sex offender he was not allowed to be with young children.

He was called in by his parole officer for questioning, and brought the two children and a young woman he called Allissa with him.

During questioning he revealed that Allissa was actually Ms Dugard. She also confirmed her identity to police.

In a telephone interview from prison with the KCRA-TV station, Mr Garrido said he had not admitted to abduction and that the birth of the first child 15 years ago had changed his life.

"If you take this a step at a time, you're going to fall over backward and in the end you're going to find the most powerful, heart-warming story," he said.

"I tell you here's the story of what took place at this house and you're going to be absolutely impressed.

"It's a disgusting thing that took place from the end to the beginning. But I turned my life completely around," he said.

Some of those who had had contact with Mr Garrido over recent years said he had developed increasingly strong religious beliefs.

Tim Allen, who did business with Mr Garrido's printing firm, told Associated Press that Mr Garrido gave the impression he was planning to establish a church. "He rambled. It made no sense," Mr Allen said.

'Given up hope'

Police said they had found a vehicle hidden in the backyard of the Antioch property that matched the vehicle described at the time of the abduction.

Although Mr Garrido was previously visited by a parole officer, there was nothing odd noticed about the backyard.

The area occupied by Ms Dugard and her children was concealed by shrubs, rubbish bins and a tarpaulin.

Ms Dugard's stepfather, Carl Probyn, who witnessed the abduction on 10 June 1991, said he had "given up hope" she would be found alive.

"It broke my marriage up. I've gone through hell, I mean I'm a suspect up until yesterday," Mr Probyn, 60, told AP.

Mr Probyn saw the young girl being taken away by two people as she walked from her home to a school bus stop in South Lake Tahoe.

He said a stranger drove up and grabbed Ms Dugard, bundling her into a grey car even as she tried to resist by kicking and screaming.

Mr Probyn believed a man and woman were in the vehicle. Despite several false reports of sightings in the intervening years, Ms Dugard was never seen again.

"She sounds like she's okay," Mr Probyn said. "I hope she's been well-treated this entire 18 years.

I very much doubt that Maddie's still alive. Two dogs told us that and two people, initials G & K know exactly what happened to her and where she is. I'm 99% sure of that as are many other people if you read other forums.

I think you should be careful what you say Chris

Posts like this are deeply libellous and could get the board in all sorts of $h!t, while some things don't add up about the case the McCann's have never been charged with any sort of offence

If there was any proof that the McCann's were involved they wouild have been charged by the Portugal police, there is not a shred of hard evidence linking them to murdering Maddie, I am not saying they didn't but in the eyes of the law they had nothing to do with Maddie's disappearance

so you reckon that theres a big cover up, all these people know what happened but are putting on a show? you reckon the portugese know what happened but are keeping it to themselves?

i said EVIDENCE, a book isnt evidence, its a money making scam!

There's not ENOUGH evidence. Simple as that. I admit that. They've just said, through their spokesman, that today's news gives them new hope. However the girl in California was snatched off the street and bundled in to the car and that's how most stranger abductions do happen.

Nothing to do with The Sun either as they've been Pro-McCann as all the UK papers generally have. I dig deeper and have read translations of Portuguese papers that haven't been gagged.

One thing, she can remember her family as she was 11 at the time of her disappearance. Maddy probably wouldn't they're saying today as she was only 4.

Rearrange the letters of Maddie and you get I'm dead. Coincidence?

:o Never realised that!

Rearrange the letters of Maddie and you get I'm dead. Coincidence?

actually theres alot of very strange coincidences in anagrams ....

I very much doubt that Maddie's still alive. Two dogs told us that and two people, initials G & K know exactly what happened to her and where she is. I'm 99% sure of that as are many other people if you read other forums.

Of course you believe Gonçalo Amaral, then head of the regional Polícia Judiciária who headed the enquiry and wrote the book, when on June 10 2009 he and four other Portuguese police officers, were charged with alleged offences relating to the inquiry into the disappearance of Joana Cipriano, from a village seven miles (11 km) from where Madeleine disappeared.

Their trial is still to occur probably early 2010.

Whilst in relation to this case Jaycee Dugard stepfather was the chief suspect for her disappearance for 8 months, as he was the only witness of the kidnapping.

Going to a similar abduction case: Natascha Kampusch (Austria): Was abducted 1998, aged 10. Eventually, after a tabloid media campaign her mother was charged and convicted of her disappearance/murder in 2002 (with the father as an accessory to the murder) and committed suicide in jail always proclaiming her innocence in 2004. 17 months before Natascha escaped from her captor in 2006.

Then there was the famous Australian Dingo running off with 9 week old baby from 1980 (Azaria Chamberlain). Where after a media campaign the mother was charged and convicted of her child's murder, with the father as an accessory to the murder, before the chance discovery of a piece of Azaria's clothing 4 years later in an area full of dingo lairs led to Lindy Chamberlain's release from prison. It was famously turned into the movie A Cry in the Dark starring Meryl Streep & Sam Neill.

Yeah, Jaycee's stepfather actually witnessed her being bundled in to a car at a bus stop but no-one else was around so no-one else saw anything. He took at least 3 lie-detector tests, which, whilst not accepted as evidence in the US, showed him to be telling the truth!! Yet still cops thought he'd had something to do with it and made up the car and kidnap story. He suffered years of abuse in the street and receiving hate mail so I read today.

Suppose it gives the McCanns some hope!

Yeah, cos the thought of their daughter being repeatedly raped and abused for the next 15 or 20 years is really something for a parent to hope for innit.....

Personally, I think I'd rather be dead than go through what this poor girl/woman has suffered.....
