Steve Hargrave, showbiz correspondent

Robbie Williams has launched his pop comeback with his first single in three

Bodies is already tipped to go straight to number one in the charts.

The former Take That star will be desperate for a hit following the relative failure of his last album.

During that time his former band-mates found huge success after relaunching their own careers.

Speaking on BBC Radio 1 Williams told listeners to be prepared for "something cosmic to happen" when they hear the track.

He also hinted he would like to appear on stage again with Take That but said various doubts put him off.

Although he had not watched the group's sell-out concerts live, he said he and Gary Barlow watched a recording of one together at his home.

He said: "I was with Gary Barlow a couple of weeks ago and we watched the whole show together at mine and I just thought it's one of the best shows I have ever seen.

"It was an amazing show and I loved it."

Williams was once the biggest solo star in the country. His biggest selling album, I've Been Expecting You, sold some 2.5 million copies in the UK.

But 2006's Rudebox sold poorly, shifting only 500,000 copies. Even so, some music industry insiders think he still has what it takes.

"It is very radio friendly," said Hitsheet's Paul Kramer. "That's the most important thing of all.

"It's going to connect with the audience you know, it's got good hooks, it's powerful, it's uplifting. And it's a good song lyrically. It's going to do well."

Williams spent the last few years resting in LA and exhibiting the usual reclusive rock-star behaviour of getting fat, growing a big beard and studying UFOs.

But for the relaunch he worked hard to get back in shape - and he had a shave.

But not all DJs are so sure it's the sort of music their listeners want to hear.

"If I was Robbie Williams, well you're going to be a bit nervous," said Absolute Radio's morning presenter Christian O'Connell.

"You're going to worry about the critical reception and how well it's going to sell because whether he likes it or not, the newspapers are going to have the numbers of the Take That albums sold along with how he does, so he's always going to be compared.

"It remains to be seen whether the world of pop can have Take That being huge again and Robbie solo."

Bodies, and the forthcoming album Reality Killed The Video Star, have been produced by former Buggle turned record-creator extraordinaire Trevor Horn, who has worked with Frankie Goes To Hollywood, ABC and The Pet Shop Boys.

Following the release Williams was expected to announce some huge UK shows and was due to appear on the new series of The X Factor.

If anyone can convince the world they should let him entertain them again, it's that cheeky chap from Stoke. Even at the ripe old age of 35.

ROBBIE WILLIAMS HAS GOT THE X FACTOR

The Sunday People

Star's £20m to judge US version Cowell bid to boost his empire

Katie Hind

Robbie Williams is being lined up for a £20million deal as a judge on an American version of X Factor.

The show's boss Simon Cowell wants pop legend Robbie to be part of a dream team including British X Factor judge Cheryl Cole.

Simon hopes the reality talent show will be bigger than his current US series American Idol.

And he thinks Cheryl, 26, has a huge future in the States along with Angels singer Robbie, 35.

Simon, 49, is anxious to launch a version of the popular show in America because he sees it as a way of building his TV empire.

Control

He would keep all the X Factor profits for himself - unlike the situation with American Idol.

His former business partner Simon Fuller, who is the boss of 19 Entertainment, owns American Idol. Cowell is entitled only to his appearance fee, which is thought to be around £27million per year.

Launching the X Factor, which is his own idea, will ensure that Simon has 100 per cent ownership of the format and money. A telly insider revealed: "Robbie Williams would be absolutely fantastic. It is a serious proposition that will be put to him.

"He has the personality to drive the show and is already a global superstar, so he is a great person for Simon to have on board. And he is willing to pay for him.

"It would also be great for Robbie's career in the States. Look what doing the X Factor has done for Cheryl Cole.

"Things have taken off for her since she started on the show.

"Simon adores being his own boss and in control.

"X Factor in the US could beat American Idol and he would love it, there's no doubt about it.

"There's always been an element of Simon Cowell versus Simon Fuller.

"They've got big egos and they love their bank balances getting ever larger."

Cowell will be helped in his continuing quest to move from music mogul to a TV phenomenon by his new business associate, Sir Philip Green.

He has signed up the billionaire retailer - owner of chains including BHS and Topshop - to act as an agent for him. Last week Sir Philip jetted to the US to hold talks on Cowell's behalf with top US TV network Fox about selling an American X Factor to them.

The plan is that Cowell will make selling the X Factor to the station a condition for him signing up to judge a further two series of American Idol for 2011 and 2012.

The insider added: "The deal for X Factor is pretty much done. Now Simon is looking at potential judges - and Robbie and Cheryl are at the top of the list.

Simon does not want to appear as a judge himself, as he does in the UK version.

But he is looking to participate in America's Got Talent, which is judged by Sharon Osbourne, Piers Morgan and David Hasselhoff.

Cowell is currently the 700th richest man in Britain after his fortune soared to £100million last year - up nearly 300 hundred places from 2008. But in 1989 he was almost bankrupt after a record firm he set up hit financial difficulties. He lost his house and his beloved Porsche.

Simon said: "I had to sell everything and owed the bank half a million pounds - but it was an adventure.

I spent my last few pounds on a taxi to my parents' home."

He later discovered acts like Westlife, Sonia and 5ive before going into TV as a Pop Idol judge.

Robbie shot to fame in the early 90s as part of boyband Take That.

He quit in 1996 and launched a solo career but has not managed to crack the States so far. A single, Bodies, is released this month.

Fame

Meanwhile Cheryl, married to England footballer Ashley Cole, has become one of the most popular women in Britain after signing up to the X Factor last year. She replaced America's Got Talent judge Sharon Osbourne on X Factor, five years after she shot to fame by winning a reality show herself - Popstars: The Rivals - with her band Girls Aloud.

They have gone on to become Britain's most popular girlbands.

Cowell's spokesman Max Clifford said of a potential Robbie deal: "There's a considerable amount under discussion. Nothing has been decided as of yet, but there are plans in the pipeline.

"Simon loves the US - and the people there love him."

Robbie glad to swap home in LA for Wiltshire

POP legend Robbie Williams has talked about love, his comeback, ghosts, go-karting in his back garden and the town of Swindon.

In an exclusive interview with Wiltshire’s Heart FM broadcast today, the 35-year-old gave a candid talk on his life in this neck of the woods.

Stoke-born Robbie, who lives in Compton Bassett, near Calne, after moving over from Los Angeles this year, told showbiz reporter Jo Parkerson: “I’ve been in the countryside and I’ve been in Swindon.

“It’s lovely down there and the people have been great with us.

“I’ve been walking the dogs and I’ve also got a racing track in the garden.

“I’ve got these things called rage buggies. They’re like go-karts for grown-ups.

“I’ve got my own track.”

Robbie said his country pad, which cost him £7m, was reputed to once belong to Katherine Parr, the last of the six wives of King Henry VIII.

“It’s Katherine’s Parr old house. In fact, we’re actually not in the old house, we’re in her barn,” he said.

When asked if there were ghosts, Robbie said: “I think there are. Haven’t seen or heard anything. Felt something but it’s not scary. It’s not scary – I’m very, very pleased to say.

“I can’t even believe that a 35-year old me has bought a 500-year old place because as a 26 or 27-year-old there’s no way that I would have chosen to be there or go anywhere near it. But it’s lovely.”

Robbie, whose best friend is Wootton Bassett resident Jonathan Wilkes, caused quite a stir in Old Town in January.

He was snapped by Swindon Advertiser photographer Stuart Harrison leaving the Red Planet Bikes, in Wood Street, wearing a black balaclava, shades and jacket.

Meanwhile, Wilkes has also firmly put down his roots in Wiltshire, close to his friend, by marrying his Swindon-born wife Nikki. They are to set up a performing arts centre later this month, called the Wilkes Academy, at Lethbridge School, in Old Town.

When Robbie was asked by Heart FM if he would marry his girlfriend Ida and if she was “the one for life” he responded: “I don’t see why not.

“Yeah, I don’t see why not. She’s wonderful.”

The former Take That star also said he was excited by the prospect of teaming up with his old band members. “I don’t know in what capacity and what medium and how many times and whatever, I really don’t know,” he said.

“Every time I’ve been with them it’s the most I’ve laughed all year and I want to have a laugh.”

Robbie’s new single Reality Killed The Video Star is released on Monday, November 9. The interview will be broadcast by Heart FM on their breakfast show between 6am and 10am and during Drive between 4pm and 7pm

ROBBIE WILLIAMS - ROBBIE WILLIAMS' GARY BARLOW GUIDANCE

ROBBIE WILLIAMS' GARY BARLOW GUIDANCERobbie Williams has asked Gary Barlow - who he famously fell out with when he quit Take That - for his opinion on his new album 'Reality Killed the Video Star'. -_-

Robbie Williams has asked Gary Barlow for advice on his new album.

The 'Angels' singer - who famously fell out with his Take That bandmate when he quit the group in 1995 - invited Gary to his Los Angeles mansion to listen to his eagerly-anticipated LP, 'Reality Killed the Video Star'.

A source said: "With so much riding on Robbie's comeback, he knew Gary would tell him the truth."

The album, which is set for release in November, will be Robbie's first album since 2006's 'Rudebox' - which was universally panned.

Although it is yet to hit stores, Robbie is already planning his next album and has revealed he takes on a different personality for each LP.

He said: "For this album, I've been Luke Moody. I don't like the name Robbie. Bert Williams for the next album."

The 35-year-old star recently said he would consider rejoining Take That once his LP comes out.

He said: "Perception was such that it was, 'Oh look, he's had to get up with Take That now that 'Rudebox' has failed. I thought I'd wait a little and get my album out. Then I can go and play with my mates."

Robbie faces album battle

ROBBIE WILLIAMS will be caught up in charts bloodshed this winter as the biggest releases of the year collide in a four-week frenzy.

Robbie's album Reality Killed The Video Star goes up against JLS's as-yet unnamed first effort in November.

And the week before that, on October 26, we'll see a tasty showdown between CHERYL COLE and her protege ALEXANDRA BURKE.

Cheryl's solo debut Three Words goes head to head with her X Factor-winning charge Alexandra's first collection - title to be announced.

On November 16 LEONA LEWIS bids for glory with Echo.

And hairy angel SUSAN BOYLE unleashes I Dreamed A Dream just seven days later.

I'm not underestimating the Scottish lassie. I can see that disc taking Christmas glory.

Williams: "Thou shall not be Jay-Z"

Tuesday, September 8 2009, 17:47 BST

By Mayer Nissim, Entertainment Reporter

Williams:

Robbie Williams has suggested that he may stop rapping, despite his desire to be Jay-Z.

The 'Bodies' singer told Capital FM that his collaboration with producer Mark Ronson will not appear on his upcoming album Reality Killed The Video Star.

Williams said: "We've done a tune together, but I'm rapping on it, and Robbie shall not rap. It's alright being Neil Tennant, I can nearly pull that one off.

"In general, these are the people I wanna be; Neil Tennant, Mick Jagger, Tom Jones, all of the goodies I can do."

He added: "But Robbie, thou shall not be Jay-Z, and it's just a shame, because I do wanna be him."

Robbie Williams is the male singer people would most like to be marooned on a desert island with, according to a poll.

The star, who is currently preparing to release his new album Reality Killed The Video Star, beat the likes of Liam Gallagher, Sir Paul McCartney and Mick Jagger to the top spot.

Music royalty service PRS For Music polled over 1,000 people in the UK for the survey, which also saw Kylie Minogue topping the female category, NME reports.

The top five males are:

1. Robbie Williams

2. Sir Paul McCartney

3. Mick Jagger

4. Eminem

5. Liam Gallagher

The top five females are:

1. Kylie Minogue

2. Cheryl Cole

3. Leona Lewis

4. Madonna

5. Lady GaGa

1. Robbie Williams

2. Sir Paul McCartney

3. Mick Jagger

4. Eminem

5. Liam Gallagher

EW! You're kidding me?! Paul "Angela Landsbury" McCartney, Mick Jagger, Eminem and Liam "Unibrow" Gallager?!?!?

This is like the game "One of these things is not like the other!"

And BOO about the Mark Ronson track not being on the album. That's a shame. :(

I'm guessing people were actually given these names to choose from and they weren't the most popular random responses?

I think they should put Eminem and Liam Gallagher on an island on their own!

Robbie's neighbours keep track

Friday, September 11, 2009

Robbie Williams has installed a go-kart track at his house Robbie Williams has been compared to 'Lotto Lout' Michael Carroll after he built a go-kart track in his back garden.

But fortunately the remarks from a local in the village of Lower Compton, near Calne in Wiltshire, were made in jest as the Angels singer has managed to charm his neighbours and isn't being too noisy, The Daily Express reports.

Robbie, 35, recently revealed he had built the track in the grounds of his Wiltshire mansion, saying: "I've got a racing track in the garden, I've got these things called rage buggies - they're like go-karts for grown-ups."

Carroll drove his neighbours mad after winning £9.7million and blowing it all on his wild party lifestyle which included installing a demolition derby track in his grounds.

A local source said of Robbie: "The go-karts have been heard. There were a few people joking that he'd become like that lottery winner who ruined his neighbours' lives with a stock-car track in his back field.

"When he first moved in, there were a few people who were worried, thinking it would be all rock star parties late at night but like all of us, he loves living here because it's quiet and friendly. We've all seen him walking the dogs."

Wonder if he wears that stupid looking helmet while go-karting....
