Although ironically the one time I thought Azerbaijan genuinely had a competitive contender, in 2010, they were expected to challenge Lena for the win and came 5th in the end. Running Scared was a bore, badly sung, and agreed it was lucky to get through a weak and spread out field with unexpected results similar to what happened this year. Even more strange than this year as the odds bore absolutely no resemblance to the final results (France vs UK was the predicted top two, they came 15th and 11th). But 2013 was the real jumping the shark moment for them. I could see at least some charm and worth in their other top fives but Hold Me was absolutely hopeless, and to say that came above stuff like Margaret Berger is ludicrous. And the fact that the 2013 split results were never released tells you all you need to know about the legitimacy of the result, the jury rankings were probably a dead giveaway.

I don't think we really need another one for at least 15-20 years. However many albums are released between now and then is anybody's guess.

Absolutely, I think because the 2011 contest was so wide open the vote fiddling would have worked better, and the same has happened here with Israel. But most of the Azeri songs that did well I would be suspicious of, When The Music Dies 4th as well!! I’m sure one year as well, it might have been San Marino, one of the smaller countries basically made up their televote in the semi final because they didn’t get enough votes and it wasn’t valid and just used that country’s jury. Something like that anyway I recall happening.

It makes me wonder what else has happened that the EBU never investigated and the country got away with. It's interesting and also delightful to see how the delegated K-pop segment in iHeartMedia stations has diversified the pop radio landscape and given representation to so many new groups and international markets. We've had the likes of JO1 and A2O May (who are Chinese but based in California and K-pop adjacent thanks to connections with Lee Soo Man, who founded SM) charting, but the segment has also played songs from BINI (who are Filipino) and more recently no na, who are Indonesian. That's not including the many K-pop and K-pop adjacent groups that they also spotlight (I see you &TEAM, your time is coming). It's fantastic to see especially in AANHPI Heritage Month when our place in the racism narrative has been made unclear thanks to the system and model minority myth. Of course there are caveats such as the recurrency rules on Mediabase inflating positions, and we'll have to see where things lie on Billboard, but it's a welcome change.

Day 19: Least favourite main character in a TV show: Naoya Mukai (Girlfriend, Girlfriend) The anime community might've easily picked Takemichi Hanagaki (Tokyo Revengers) or Kazuya Kinoshita (Rent-A-Girlfriend), but I haven't watched both anime so I couldn't judge them properly. Elsewhere, Boruto Uzumaki and Asta (Black Clover) could be top picks as well, but I love them both. My pick goes to the main character from a mid-tier romance anime. Basically, he's kinda annoying because all I can remember from him in the first two seasons is his scream. Luckily, one of the harems carried the entire show to make me not drop the series.
