I see that the dance forum has a "commercial dance" subforum now.

Could we have ones on here for "Emo / Goth / Kiddy Punk" and "Commercial Alternative" (heh - there's an oxymoron for you)?

That'd solve the arguments about where to stick MCR...well, it'd break it down to which of those should it go into...#

What do the mods think?

Man 100%!!!

In the past i've requested a Modern Rock forum, a Mainstream Rock forum, an Adult Rock forum with the statement that thats the only involvement that i want.

i think this action is now probs the best action esp since dance has a subforum and the metalheads wont have a disney punk tune in there.

however it wouldnt be Commercial Alternative it would just be branded as a Mainstream Rock or Adult Rock forum. The kinda place where you can find fricking Ocean Colour Scene and other boring dadrock stuff (stuff that the grey haired quizman plays before starting the quiz at the pub week after week). Also will give a home to Bon Jovi, random Winklers and all the cheese acts from the 'metal hertitage'.

More feedback would be welcomed.

I noticed the Punk and Metal is none to active recently perhaps that could be a sub forum also?

I'm not sure how it should be organise, but I'd welcome suggestions.

I think we should just have a forum called rock, then inside are all the sub forums, indie, alternative, punk, metaL ETC.

That could be the best way. Just as dance should have 'drum n bass', 'electro', 'trip hop' etc.

I'd vote for chapstick's suggestion.

"Commercial Alternative" probably has to be one of the worst genre titles ever... It is a total oxymoron. I call it what it is - Pop Rock...

Having an Emo/Kiddie Punk Forum would be alright tbh... I would put any "goth" threads into Metal though, because Goth (well, proper Goth at any rate) is a pretty dark music form... A thread on bands like Christian Death or Fields of the Nephilim aint gonna play too well in Indie/Alt let's face it...

good idea... that would tidy things up :)

yes sounds good to me

One main and four section.

I can then see pop and Rnb wanting at least the same. -_-

I'd agree with having a sub-forum inside here but only for Emo/Goth or whatever. That's the one genre that really doesn't fit inside any of the main genre forums and the one that causes the most problems as Pan!c, Fall Out Boy etc etc don't really fit in Metal, but they cdefinitley don't fit in Indie, and then they don't really fit into Pop either.

Pop doesn't need one, popular Dance, rock, and rnb are variations of pop anyway. For RNB you could just have : Proper RNB and Gasnsta rap $h!t.

If this does get done with the rock forum though i think it needs to be made very clear what bands go in what genre, maybe a pinned topic with all the really popular acts in each forum would be a good idea?

Anyway heres my opinion on how it could be split into forums:

Indie/ Alternative- Kooks, Nickel Back, Oasis etc

Popular Modern Punk/rock- Bands like Offspring, Green Day, Sum 41, system of a Down- and i suppose c**p like MCR would also go in this.

classic Rock- Bands like Aerosmith and...?

Metal- Metalica, GNR, Juda Priest, Ozzy osbourne

Goth does fit in with Metal/Punk though... Anyone who has an awareness of musical history knows that Goth is an offshoot of 70s Punk Rock/Post Punk... It was initiated by Punk/Post Punk bands like The Damned, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, Joy Division and The Cure (yes, they have been around for that long, first album in 1979...), so Goth does have home.......

I think that the 'Industrial' genre is the far more problematic one.... Just where do you put the likes of Nine Inch Nails, Skinny Puppy, Nitzer Ebb, Front 242, Front Line Assembly, CombiChrist, etc....?

why Pop Rock??? yeah or could be Mainstream Rock or Adult Rock, just Rock or Stadium Rock if you wanna group all the big bands together

and you could call the info in the genre info box "things that you could imaging being used in a sync deal for American Pie 9 - American Pie meets the Police Academy!!!"

yeah, well its a bit silly to have all the mainstream rock acts over at pop when most people will think they are rock, but obv they are neither indie, alternative or punk!!!

it does!!! yeah man you are right that pop is actually any genre the mainstream appropiates and makes a commercial success and comodity out of to be sold at tescos whether that genre has been appropiated from R&B, indie, or homosexul dance culture.

However think pop should be split into something like young and old, so in one you would get all the Radio Disney stuff and things aimed at tweens. and in the other all the MOR/adult soul/pop stuff that my mum & dad likes. Gabrielle, Marti P/Wet Wet Wet, Lighthouse Family, 'Wombling' Katie Melua, Lisa Stansfield, Seal, Simply Red etc etc

Obv you dont know jack $h!t about indie music culture man if you are gonna put motherfucking 'Nickel Back' in with all the angular stuff indie kids like. The Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy and random Trip-hoppers have more right to be in an Alternative music forum than fricking 'Nickel Back'!!! Please go read Plan B, The Wire, Artrocker, Clash etc etc before you make any more comments in this thread

also read currect issue of Classic Rock magazine and notice the word metal on the cd cover  (ie its part of metal in the rock divide not just retro)

I know NickelBack are not indie  . They are alternative rock though aren't they?

Well in my opinion having too many subforums will effectively kill the forum off. Sure 3-4 is fine but when we start bringing the likes of 'Stadium Rock' into the equation it's getting a bit silly. I mean exactly how many topics can we have in there (The Fray? Nickelback? hmm)?

I'm sure we can loosely base around 4 different categories in which we can define which band is discussed in which section. Any other than that will just ruin the forum imo as we'll just have a load of empty sub-forums with next to no discussion occuring.

And before anyone jumps on my back about which genre an artist fits into I'm not really WELL UP on these things ...
