May 4, 200619 yr WTF for Rihanna! The single stalls at the mid 30's for a few weeks now and all of a sudden a massive shoot to #1? And her album debuts at #5 with over 100k in first week sales, I must say I am very impressed with Rihanna, and Unfaithful debuts at #51!!!   That girl must be happy right now, she seems to be riding high!
May 4, 200619 yr It was finally just released as a digital song which is why it skyrocketed to #1. Unfortunately, record companies are now delaying the release of digital songs until the date of the album's release.
May 4, 200619 yr It was finally just released as a digital song which is why it skyrocketed to #1. Unfortunately, record companies are now delaying the release of digital songs until the date of the album's release. Ahhh I see, thanks for the info.
May 4, 200619 yr Bloody hell. That's quite a climb. And I was shocked when Kanye West climbed to #1 from - what was it? - #19. Guess it shows that what songs are played most are not necessarily the most popular.
May 4, 200619 yr Bloody hell. That's quite a climb. And I was shocked when Kanye West climbed to #1 from - what was it? - #19. Guess it shows that what songs are played most are not necessarily the most popular. I think it shows how stupid Billboard's 'airplay decides chart positions' system is really.
May 4, 200619 yr I think that this actually shows that airplay is creating a smaller effect for the chart pretty much every week since the downloads are increasing (actually soon the airplay might have such a small effect that Billboard will have to adjust the chart rules to protect the airplay). I mean there is just one track in the entire top 40 charting without a download (Shakira at no 19) so sales are certainly making a huge difference. Even a huge airplay hit like Mary J Blige's Be Without you stalled at no 3 because of low sales. And yeah, I do agree that it is quite stupid from the record companies to delay the download release dates to get more album sales. I mean this same thinking led in the US to the demise of the cd single and the creation of the booming download business for the first Napster etc. with no money for recors companies. And now it seems that they are going to be making the same mistake again if they continue with this path...
May 4, 200619 yr This is truly unexpected, after bubbling around the 30s for the last 3 weeks and unfaithful, the hot shot new debut!
May 4, 200619 yr With downloads being so massive will the US chart performances be similar to the UKs? Glad for Rihanna cause her songs rock! I'd love to see Shakira making a similar impact but her single's not available on downloads yet

Well thats the main thing that counts innit? albums! sometimes they try to do the trick of releasing the album before the single is released in this country but it doesnt seem to work
May 4, 200619 yr omg yay-ness for shakira :cheer: the download is released on May 9, hopefully she can knock Rihanna off :cheer: but yay for Rihanna  number 1 and a huge debut and huge selling first week for her album :cheer:
May 4, 200619 yr Author Shakira's chances of number 1 are like certain :o She's the only song in the top 40 not to have a download available. Its such an anticipated song. I expect strong slaes, slightly below Rihannas (on account of the fact the re-release has been out for a while and many HDL fan will have bought this. Fort Minor's fabulos 'Where'd You Go' likely to climb into the Top 10 next week. Rihanna likely to stay atop for another week I'd have thought. The Fray likely to gain as well. Don't be suprised to see KT Tunstall on a significant gain next week mabye into the Top 30 or more. She played on American idol and its done wonders for the downloads of 'Black Horse and the Cherry Tree'. Nearing the top 10 on iTunes :o Seeing as downloads are such a significant factor in the billboard chart (just look at Rihanna) I think I'll keep a daily track of the iTunes USA chart in this thread :D Similar to the one already going for iTunes UK. Then we can see what's coming for the following week on the Billboard :cheer:
May 4, 200619 yr if shakira gets to number 1 in the latin chart she'll be the first artist in history to get to number 1 on the latin chart with a song in english!
May 4, 200619 yr Its surprising how much difference downloads have made! :o James Blunt, Daniel Powter and now Rihanna :o
May 4, 200619 yr Shakira will almost certainly go to #1 the week it is released to iTunes just as Rihanna has. Also expect Gnarls Barkley to debut on the chart next week because hype from the UK is pushing it up the iTunes chart.
