  1. I'm sure Bruno Mars had some kind of thing that charted before his debut album. I remember this because at that time I still couldn't figure out whether Bruno Mars was the rapper or the singer on Nothin On You and was surprised that people were confident enough to buy an album from him. So maybe that's why it's not on the list.
  2. I remember that song. And I also remember Flo Rida covered it.
  3. I think there's not much risk to it and it's a win for them all. The people who actually make the songs get to have their songs heard by millions, make loads of money, get to meet celebrities and frankly probably don't actually have to work very much. And the artists get to be given guaranteed hit songs, fame, adoration, lots of money, etc. They just need to keep quiet about it. And really given the astronomical amount of money (as well as fame, social influence, etc) that we're dealing with here, there's probably serioous levels of blackmail involved. They're dealing with things on such a big scale that none of us can even truly comprehend it unless we experience it for ourselves. I honestly think most popular artists in all genres don't actually make their own music, or have little input in it. And artists that do genuinely make their own music they seem to be prevented from being commercially successful. Even going back to the Beatles, I watched an amazing 3 hour documentary about them on Youtube many years ago (which seems to have now been deleted, but it used to have 10+ million views), and it was showing basically how the songs weren't made by a group of teenage boys, it was mostly old, balding men in an office writing the songs and The Beatles were just performing them really. But it's a lot more exciting and creates more personality around the boys if you say they made the songs as well. And if it's not realistic you can just say they had a bit of help but they did most of the work. I think they really are probably the most influential thing to happen in modern pop music because this has basically become the model for all future pop music after that.
  4. It's not really the same thing but there were two versions of Empire State Of Mind and Don't Stop Believin being hits at the same time.
  5. lol if someone came up with the idea of 4'33'' today it would probably be called 2'21'' or something. I was disappointed when I listened to the extended version of I'm Good and it was about 4 minutes long. I thought extended versions of dance songs are supposed to be like 7 minutes. Oh well.

Ed Sheeran's album has outsold Adele's album now. Although I'm not that surprised, I predicted this might happen before they were even released.
  7. Or T-Pain 5 O'clock.
  8. Rebecca Black - Friday should be a weekly thing imo.
  9. Even back then, Perfect debuted high, fell out of the top 50 I think and then climbed to #1. Hotline Bling did the same thing on a smaller scale.
  10. They used to play Ghetto Superstar (and maybe still do) on Heart as well, which I also thought was strange.
  11. I thought if you are non-binary then are you ARE transgender (i.e. not cis-gender)? If not then my mistake. But I'm sure I've seen many other non-binary people call themselves transgender on the Internet. But Halsey is not a woman, basically. She's a different gender to what she was assigned at birth. Although I would disagree that she's been pretty open about it. She was in the days when she had a big following on Tumblr. Ever since Closer came out I don't think I've ever heard her mention it once (of course I trust you that she has, I don't exactly pay much attention to her). But at the time (I think it was 2016?) I was genuinely curious how the public would react to a non-binary pop star. But the months passed, and more months passed... And it just seemed like nothing happened, nobody seemed to know (and it seems a lot of the people in this very thread don't seem to know about this). I think she definitely was a lot quieter about it after she became famous, in the Tumblr days it was something she talked about a LOT, to the point people were making jokes about her mentioning it so much.
  12. Halsey is transgender. Although she suddenly started to become a lot less vocal about it once she became famous...
  13. Why are East 17 on the video chart? Legendary song but a bit strange and with a Christmassy video. Is it to do with the Queen?
  14. Surely if the lists are now customised songs that you never listened to could still be high up if Spotify predicts you'd like it? They already have other playlists like the On Repeat playlist which is made up of the songs you listen to a lot recently. But their other playlists like the radio playlists and genre playlists (which are decided by an algorithm for each user) are a mix of songs you listen to and ones you don't listen to but they think you might like.
  15. I think Chris Rea, Michael Buble, Brenda Lee and others could even all get #1 eventually. Everything that sells half of Mariah/WHAM! for at least one week would be in contention. Probably a different classic or two each year I guess. And anything that's top 25 on ACR selling 25,000 (e.g. Feliz Navidad, Sleigh Ride, Jingle Bell Rock, etc,) would have potential to be selling 50,000 and therefore top 5 on SCR if they haven't peaked there previously and loads of other songs aren't reset the same weeks. The Christmas charts could be weird (although probably more entertaining for us) with that rule, but for the rest of the year I think it would work perfectly.
  16. I'm just shocked that Easy On Me was #350 last week. And Perfect #573, etc. You've got Heart FM and loads of small local stations which seem to not be able to get enough of songs like those. And Rihanna - Diamonds being so high last week is impressive. I guess it was a good choice for a lead single after all.
  17. The OCC need to change the rules on this. It needs to be automatic for any song that reaches a new peak. It would have solved the Kate Bush situation, plus Fairytale of New York will finally go to #1 haha.
  18. I obviously know what they were going for with Don't Wake Me Up but at parts it sounded like Jessie J, Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera hybridised and then we're being burned alive. I think Beautiful People was better as a euphoric dance song because although his voice has lots of effects on that song too it sounds more like he's underwater and it's not so shrill. No Air, although it's not a dance song, was very euphoric too. It was very shouty too but not as grating to listen to because their voices sounded more natural in it.
  19. Personally I am worried for Rihanna. Most people seem to think that she will come back and dominate like she always did, but I think it will be hard. Someone in year 7 right now, although it's possible they may know a song like Umbrella from hearing it in places, might not be able to remember experiencing a current Rihanna hit. I don't imagine that Wild Thoughts was popular with young children. Also, on the topic of Rihanna, I don't think you can say that Dua Lipa's career is over because We're Good didn't do as well as expected. Rihanna had many singles that did even worse than We're Good and it didn't hurt her. If you can get at least one massive hit each year along with a few moderate hits each year then you can also have a couple of flops each year, it doesn't really matter.
  20. Yes, it's the same thing. But it's fairly common now (most people still have pre-album singles, but even if 90% of albums today have pre-album singles that's a LOT which don't), so the thread is only asking in the physical era, where it's probably quite a small list and quite exceptional for the time. Now it's just uncommon.
  21. I'm shocked that You Know Me is higher than Bodies. And Shame is such a boring song in my opinion. I guess obviously there will be a few people out there who like it but I can't believe they didn't think they could do something better. And Tripping and Lovelight should be higher really. Songs that were hits in the mid-00s are always so low on these lists.

To be honest Bad Habits being the 2nd biggest single of 2022 would also be unbelievable 12 months ago.
  23. You can't make that up.

Moves Like Jagger was actually a held-back release itself. It was released here probably the standard 2-3 months after it was released in other countries, and got pre-release airplay on Radio 2 and a some small local stations.
  25. There's Rihanna's song Right Now from 2013 (I think), it says "ft. David Guetta" but then I found out it is actually a Nicky Romero song and they just put his name on it. But I wouldn't be surprised if a LOT of chart music isn't written or produced (or possibly even sung) by who they say they are. You can easily lie about a pop star writing their own music and nobody can question it because nobody is ever actually there when the songs are made, and there are millions of people who would be willing to be ghost-writers. You won't be famous but you'll still be given loads of money and will have a life of luxury for agreeing to go along with it.
