Is AIWFCIY the most famous song ever?
Surely things like the Tetris theme tune are more famous than any pop song? It's sold hundreds of millions of copies, been very popular for decades and people have listened to it on loop for dozens of hours, unlike the standard pop song which people like which they might listen to a couple hundred times altogether.

Most UK Top 40 singles?
The media are very, very, very unfair to him. People in the music industry mostly seem to really despise him. It's really unfair in my opinion. I think at one point they even tried to frame him as a pedophile. Maybe he doesn't support gay marriage or something but it's no reason to be THAT nasty to him.

The Weeknd is set to make history this week
Ah ok thanks. That explains some of the posts I've read of people panicking that this is Sam Fender's last chance to be in the top 10 lol. I didn't understand why people thought that. Although to me it's an arbitrary rule, probably the most arbitrary rule yet in the streaming era for the singles chart as it's not simply numerical (3 songs rule or 3 years ACR rule) or even music industry related (like labels nominating singles for a reset) but a one-off rule for 1 or 2 weeks only as a result of cultural celebrations (which would potentially open the door to them being able to make a special rule only for Christmas songs in December if they've set a precedent with this rule).

The Weeknd is set to make history this week
Well, maybe I don't understand how it works, but I imagine it'll be back on SCR at New Year's surely? I don't think it will be like Mr. Brightside though. I seems more like an I Gotta Feeling. Although as another poster said it wasn't as overplayed as I Gotta Feeling (or at least it didn't seem very overplayed from what I experienced) so that should help the longevity of Blinding Lights.

Every "cold" song and their peaks in the top 40
My favourites are: 1. Cold Rock A Party 2. Ice Box 3. Cold Shoulder 4. Frozen I like Baby, It's Cold Outside as well. Most of them I don't even know. I can't even remember the Girls Aloud song from the title, but I do remember them having a song that sounded like Wonderwall so I probably do know it.

Stay I think has to be one of the most common as well, I can think of so many.

Ed Sheeran - “=“ first week sales predictions
I saw more people comparing Shape Of You to Cheap Thrills at the time. I don't think it's really similar to Starboy, except the vocal melodies where I do see some similarity now I think about it, but I would have never noticed if it wasn't pointed out.

Adele - 30 (First Week Sales Predictions)
Possibly. Maybe Coldplay are the ones who overperformed. But it will probably take years to figure it out, like we might get to the end of the decade and these recent albums might have the highest first-week sales of the decade, and we'll look back at this differently.

I'm just laughing at the fact that Wretch 32 is featured on a song called Don't Go.

Adele - 30 (First Week Sales Predictions)
Yeah it genuinely seems like a horrible place to live. But it's a massive place and the rich and poor are completely segregated from each other, so for the celebrities, tech people and other "elites" it's probably quite nice. They have mansions and glamorous restaurants and nightclubs in secluded areas, often with literal gates and security guards.

Ed Sheeran - “=“ first week sales predictions
Ed Sheeran said in an interview years ago that he'll never get a hit as big as Thinking Out Loud ever again (which I agreed with at the time, a hit that big is almost impossible to top). But as we know he surpassed that in the end, somehow. So really in a sense his peak lasted longer than he probably expected.

OCC: The Wanted's Top 20 Biggest Songs
To me I knew easily it would be #2 before I opened the thread. The #1 is obvious also, and I thought it was amazing that it ended up being an even bigger hit in the US than it was here, really such an unexpected crossover. And I loved Alex Gaudino's remix of it too. My other favourites were Chasing The Sun, I Found U and Warzone.

Surely they must have had bucket loads of top 20 singles by now.

2 huge hits should never hurt. In my opinion the songs are quite similar and both electronic and upbeat so maybe that hurt the interest in his album. One of them should have been acoustic and/or a ballad, those are the songs people seem to love most from Ed, especially the full album listeners.

OCC: Adele's Top 20 Biggest Songs
Yes, it's true. Most radio stations started playing it the day after BRITs performance if I remember correctly (and interestingly, the first couple of weeks, THE actual BRITs performance got a lot of airplay rather than the album version), but it was 100% definitely an album track when it reached #1. It was the first time it ever happened I think. And I think it would have been #1 anyway even if radio decided to refuse to play it because it wasn't an official single. It was a long time ago so I can't remember perfectly, but I think there were rumours that Set Fire To the Rain was going to be the 2nd single Some post album singles before then did get to #1 1-2 months before their release dates (off memory ones like Airplanes and What's My Name? I think), but that was different, because they had the same promotion schedule as pre-album singles where they would get airplay 2-3 months before their official release day. So when they got to #1, we knew they were singles and they were already being played by radio. So amazing as those songs (or frankly any post-album single that gets to #1 is), it's different when it's an full-on album track that we weren't expecting to be released. And some might say "It's a single because it was performed on TV". It's not true. People like Jessie J, Ed Sheeran and Emeli Sandé and others performed album tracks on TV, nobody says they were singles today, theirs just didn't fly to #1 and have all the radio stations adding it to their playlists as a result, that's the only difference.

New Adele single
To be honest I think next time Maneskin release a song they'd be an easy #1, but if they're up against Adele probably not. If they did manage to beat Adele it would be historic though. But Adele will easily get over 1 million so it's very unlikely. And if she releases something as good as Rolling in the Deep again the numbers will be out of this world I think.

Who will be #1 on the 12th of November release week
Probably ABBA or Ed. Does anybody think Ed's album might actually do better than Adele's? I've learnt not to underestimate Adele because I did last time and was wrong, but I don't think the album will do as well as 25, and Ed's album probably won't do as well as his previous couple either but I think his decline will be smaller than Adele's. Obviously they are both hugely successful and will have mega-smash albums no matter what, but I'm saying I could see Ed doing 4 million sales long run and Adele 3.5 million for example, so I hope I don't upset anybody by saying this, and there's a good chance I'll be wrong anyway

iTunes Weekly Thread w/c 10th September 2021
99 Souls have a Buzzjack account. I'm sure there must be others too. Lil Nas X was a regular poster for years on ATRL which is like the US version of Buzzjack.

In this day and age labels shouldn't bother picking singles in advance. Only with pop stars and maybe most dance artists they need to do that. With rap artists the public always choose the singles. It might be that way with rock bands too if Maneskin are anything to go by. Like with Pop Smoke's album for example, I don't know why they chose something before release. They could have just waited a week or two to tell Radio 1 what to playlist. His current single might be ineligible to chart the whole time now lol.

Spotify & Apple Music Chart Discussion
There have been too many cases of songs featuring even the likes of Drake or Ed Sheeran doing nothing being followed up by them getting massive hits shortly after for me to make that conclusion. It's probably happened to Justin himself before, I bet you can find an album track he featured on in the 12 months before What Do You Mean came out which didn't do well in the charts. I never liked What Do You Mean btw, he had so many better songs than that before which everybody hated on when they were released.

I know they've always been popular, but it seems like they've made a bit of a comeback recently with their past hits.

Official Chart Flashback
Freak Like Me is an amazing song. But I'm surprised that it only gets 40,000 plays a week now, I thought it would be more. Lots of "retro" songs get 300,000 a week on Spotify alone.

Misleading highest peaks?
I saw Nero being discussed in the "favourite single of the 2010's" thread, but I think they're a funny case because 4 of their singles all sold a relatively similar amount (about 150,000) at least in the recent aftermath of their release, (I don't know what their sales are now). And their peaks were something like 15, 8, 1, 32 iirc. That said, I think Promises probably is their most famous song now. It's the one that they decided to release in the US (which had a knock-on effect to the UK public, especially on the Internet), it has Calvin Harris and Skrillex remixes, and it has the #1 status.

Best-selling singles of all-time in the UK
And just try to imagine what the "sales" would be like if the streaming era had started in the 1960's! Bohemian Rhapsody would probably be far above 10 million.

Haha thanks. Although I'm sure someone else here must've made a joke about it before. To be honest when I saw the song in the charts I did think for a split second it was THE A1 back. But I quickly knew it must be another artist, especially because I saw it was a collaboration with J1. If it was a song just by A1 I might have been fooled for longer. Also, are A1 and J1 technically a group or are they two artists collaborating? We had this problem before with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. I liked A1's cover of Take On Me. I think Blinding Lights by The Weeknd has a Take On Me vibe too. I don't know if other people picked up on that or if it's one of those things only I can hear as is the case sometimes.
