iTunes Weekly Thread w/c 7th June 2015
He had a song a few years back called Out Of Control which I loved! I think I even mentioned it on here since it sounded a lot like As Long As You Love Me by Justin Bieber (except with rapping instead of singing).

It's 'sold' around 90,000 now I think, so it'll pass 100,000 soon. Would be nice if it went top 40 in the charts but I don't really care tbh, at least it just managed to scrape top 75. Its beat is quite similar to Natalie La Rose - Somebody which has charted high so I'll take that instead.

Carly Rae Jepsen on Radio 1! :o Trap Queen isn't in the top 40 on Capital FM. Maybe next week.

It's true. I don't think the general public ever really completely lose interest in an artist. In 2012 we probably could've said the public lost interest in Mark Ronson, Robin Thicke, Daft Punk and Pharrell. If you get a commercial song and the general public actually get to hear it, it's possible for almost anybody (except extreme cases like Gary Glitter or someone) to get another hit imo. But I think some artists get stuck in a downward spiral. They have some under-performing singles then record labels promote them less and radio stations play them less which leads to them performing even worse which leads to less promotion, and so on.

Spotify Chart Thread 2015, Part I
I'm not sure, but Firestone did the same by getting high streaming with no airplay. Maybe it's a Kygo thing.

I've liked the original version of this song for ages! Would be nice if it gets in the charts.

Not to mention triple Sam Smith lower down. In the case of Thinking Out Loud Heart FM have had that in high rotation almost a year now, since they opted for it instead of Don't, and then continued playing it when it was actually a single. :drama: I kind of think after a while they should've put TOL down to 10-15 spins a week and chose another album track to play (or the original version of Bloodstream or Photograph). But oh well, they'll push Thinking Out Loud towards 2 million.

The reason Trap Queen is so high in the charts is because it was the most played song on Radio 1 last week! :D They dropped it off their playlist, and they were literally the only thing promoting the song so I think it'll probably drop fairly fast now (although streaming will probably keep it in the top 40 for a bit longer...). I imagine Radio 1 will love this song. Lots of DJs seem to like it, I heard it three times in one night a couple of weeks back, and usually I hear it at least once, even in mainstream clubs. Not sure on their total sales so I might be wrong, but Loyal probably did do better in the charts than Ayo? It got a lower peak, but Loyal wasn't held back so it had to climb into the top 10, which I don't think Ayo would've managed without being held back. And yeah, regardless of the charts, Loyal is obviously the bigger song of the two. This reminds me a bit of Breach's singles Jack and Everything You Never Had which did roughly the same in the charts.

Yeah, but they don't have much of a choice really. It's either push back the release date and hope to be able to get more radio airplay so the song will sell or keep the original date and flop.

Streaming is killing the charts
If they're ever going to include Youtube they should include all of it (it's unfair for them not to include stuff like unofficial lyric videos or the dance music channels when people clearly are listening to those for the song). If anything it's the official music videos which should not be included since you could argue people are watching those for the visuals and don't care about the music (but I'm sure in 90%+ of cases people are listening for the music). The unofficial user-uploaded videos are usually just an image in the background or lyrics along with the audio, those should definitely be counted. Who cares if a random song goes top 10 because of Youtube once a year (which is pretty much how often it happens in the US)? The UK chart used to be filled with charity singles, 'fake' versions of un-released songs, Glee Cast singles, old songs re-entering from X Factor, Facebook campaigns, promo singles, Global radio artists, old songs re-entering from discounts and someone dying. We've had Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead and Surfin' Bird get near #1 in recent years. We had Precision Tunes go top 10 lol. PJ & Duncan re-entering at #1. Youtube would be a double-edged sword though. Whilst it might liven up the chart with the occasional gimmicky entry (we've had a lot less of these since streaming was added), it would also keep the biggest hits in the top 40 for even longer. So I wouldn't mind that much if it wasn't included.

These songs do have a lot in common too. I'm interested to see if the biggest hit of 2016 is going to be another one like these or if it'll be something else.

Streaming is killing the charts
That's not going to make the chart less static. If anything it'll make the chart more static. Fanbases can't influence a streaming chart in the same was as a sales chart. Also, someone was saying that in the past you could just look at the release schedule and know all the #1s way in advance. How is it any different now? It's been clear as day for months that Cheerleader was going to be massive. Same with other songs like Am I Wrong, All About That Bass, etc, we all knew those songs would be huge months before they actually got #1. Even stuff like Lean On and Where Are U Now, those songs got massive amounts of streams on Spotify from day 1, so it was obvious they'd become big chart hits. The charts are just going to be a lot slower now, there's nothing we can do about it, we just have to get over it. The best way we can speed up the charts is to get Capital FM to change what it plays. The main two things Capital needs to change to speed up the charts are lower the amount of spins it gives to songs in high rotation. Apparently now it's 70+ times a week, so it should lower it to 40 times a week (even lower would be nice). But what's probably even more important is for how LONG songs are kept in high rotation. In the past Capital kept songs like We Found Love and Moves Like Jagger in high rotation for over a year, which is why those songs had such long chart runs. If Capital could decide that they'd only let songs have high rotation for a maximum of 2-3 months, then put them on lower rotation (e.g. 20 spins a week max) afterwards, that would help the big hits drop out faster. But really, as long as songs like Uptown Funk or Thinking Out Loud are getting promoted on the radio to hundreds of thousands of people every hour every day, they're not going to drop out the top 40... This kind of promotion is like someone getting to perform the same song on X Factor every weekend, you can't expect the charts to move fast when songs get such high levels of airplay for such a long time. However, Capital FM is never going to change. My suggestions are pointless, and just wishful thinking... Another option for chart followers is to focus more on the #41-#200 section of the chart. You get some interesting songs down there and whilst you still get a lot of old songs hanging around seemingly forever, you also get a lot of new entries to freshen it up.

Streaming is killing the charts
I'm not sure if I would say it's a "mistake". It makes the chart slower, but what can they do about it? It's clear that sales are in decline (since some point in 2013), streaming is increasing fast, it'll be counting for 70% of sales soon. Whilst a lot of us follow the charts as a hobby, the charts aren't necessarily meant to be entertaining. The main thing is that they're as accurate as possible, the fact that there's hardly any movement from week to week shouldn't matter, if that's what the data says then that's what it has to be. In terms of the chart show it's being cut down to 2 hours now I think so hopefully they'll stop playing all the long runners from then on. It probably won't be as boring to listen to with all the oldest songs taken out. I actually think there's a lot of good songs in the charts right now, but some of them hang around for a very long time.

2003 was awesome. It's 2015 but even in most (mainstream) clubs today I hear loads of 2003 hits. In the US In Da Club was year-end #1 (but that chart was basically all airplay at the time). 1. 50 Cent - In Da Club 2. K. Relly - Ignition Remix 3. Sean Paul - Get Busy 4. Beyonce - Crazy In Love 5. 3 Doors Down - When I'm Gone 6. Matchbox Twenty - Unwell 7. Chingy - Right Thurr 8. Aaliyah - Miss You 9. Kid Rock - Picture 10. Evanescence - Bring Me To Life The top 4 are club staples even today (I'm genuinely curious as to when they'll stop getting played, as it doesn't seem like it'll happen anytime soon, but they're getting quite old now...). #10 is a classic too, I'm sure it's been top 100 on iTunes quite a lot this decade. She's lasted 2010-2015 now, which isn't something we can look down on imo. I think the media hype in 2011 made a lot of people hate her, but that was never Jessie J's fault.

OCC: Will Young's Best Sellers Revealed
Not trying to discredit him, but wasn't Jealousy the song he release a few years ago when sales were at an all-time high? It's impressive that he managed to get a big hit so long after he got famous, but some of the lower songs were probably bigger in the charts, but were released in lower sales climates, meaning they're lower in a list like this.

Record labels will probably all be trying to get their artists to do them if these boosts continue.

Yeah, I think most people who use Youtube use it for the audio. Dark Horse by Katy Perry got all the way to #1 on the VEVO chart without a music video which pretty much proves this.

The album version of Bad Blood is top 10 now. Maybe there'll be two versions of it in the top 10 soon.

I like it as well, but it sounds like something will.i.am or The Cataracs would've made 5 years ago. The bit at the end where it goes all disco is the best, I would have loved a version of the song where it was like that the whole way through.

A few years ago I thought Kendrick was going to do a song with Lady Gaga (:puke: :puke:), and nothing will ever be as scary as the thought of that! Taylor Swift's songs aren't that bad imo. Most of them are just a bit boring (especially the ones like Love Story, etc.), but they're not musically terrible like Lady Gaga's were, so I don't mind Kendrick doing a song with her. Kendrick survived through Give It 2 U so I think this will be fine.

BBC Radio 1Xtra Playlist
The 1Xtra playlist never has an effect on the charts. I've seen some songs on their playlist not be in the top 1000 on iTunes before. It needs Capital or Radio 1 (or maybe Heart or Kiss).

Tough Love feat. Ginuwine - Pony (Jump On It)
I hope this smashes, it'd serve Rihanna right for not releasing her version as a single!
