Thanks! I'll check these ones out. According to Spotify my most-listened to song of last year was Utah Saints - Something Good '08 (High Contrast Remix), which is a wonderful drum & bass song, but obviously "ancient" lol. But I must have contributed about 5 sales to it overall. I know Afterglow by Wilkinson sort of became a hit again last year as well, but I don't really count that because it's not a new hit. I love this song and I still listen to it sometimes.
  2. Yeah, Mr. Brightside was something like 11th for last decade, and that was basically with half a decade of streaming. With a full decade I think it would have a chance at #1.

I love drum & bass very, very much, but there were lots of them doing well in the charts in the mid-10s. It barely feels like it's "gone". Indie music hasn't really been in the charts for like 15 years! And as for proper rock music, 20+ years probably. So if those genres came back it would be much more remarkable imo. Btw, have there been any drum & bass songs in the charts recently? I only know about 20 of the hit songs from the past few years.
  4. All the band were fans of Aleister Crowley, so that might not be a funny interpretation of the lyrics, that might be actually the true meaning of them!
  5. If you haven't heard it already, Skepta sampled it in this song:
  6. It's probably just based on the past hour of streams.
  7. It's pretty much the same in every Western country. Everybody who doesn't support that particular kind of politics gets media treatment like Trump and Corbyn did. It's completely unfair and over the top and it's very, very, very difficult for anybody to overcome because many of the public believe the lies. Neither of them are racist but so many people genuinely think they are. Keir Starmer is basically the same as Boris, there's no point in supporting him in my view.
  8. I honestly think Ed will get much, much less than 9 million. Probably less than half. I think T.I made less than 1 million from Blurred Lines (which was almost as big as Shape Of You) altogether (we found out this after a court case a few years ago), and this was including YouTube, all other streaming services, downloads and physical sales, uses in TV shows, films and adverts, radio airplay, plays in clubs, bars, restaurants, shopping centres, songs which covered and sampled it, and so on. Pharrell and Robin Thicke made about 5 million each from the song from everything together. So I think Ed making anywhere close to 9 million from Shape Of You just on Spotify I think can't be possible, although he probably made 10 million+ from the song altogether. I know a guy who was in a semi-successful band in the 80's, and he said he usually gets a 15,000 pound or so every year (he gets it all yearly in December) in his bank account, mostly from recurrent radio play.

I love The Kunts. I'm sorry, but they're great. Women Love a bast*rd is my favourite. Period Pants is another good one.
  10. I will never forget them because the Frankie Knuckles remix of Good Thing is so beautiful.
  11. People really think that about Baby It's Cold Outside? Anyone who thinks that is a nasty piece of work, and they'll take offence at anything.

Her US success is amazing. She was #1 in the decade-end chart for both the 90's and the 00's. I think she is a great pop star though and I wish she could still get hits. I know Ariana Grande is supposed to be the new version of her, and I sort of like her but it's not the same.
  13. Surely things like the Tetris theme tune are more famous than any pop song? It's sold hundreds of millions of copies, been very popular for decades and people have listened to it on loop for dozens of hours, unlike the standard pop song which people like which they might listen to a couple hundred times altogether.

The media are very, very, very unfair to him. People in the music industry mostly seem to really despise him. It's really unfair in my opinion. I think at one point they even tried to frame him as a pedophile. Maybe he doesn't support gay marriage or something but it's no reason to be THAT nasty to him.

That's true. And also if they actually were they would be more likely to get away with it as well because you can pay people money to keep secrets. Also, the Amazon numbers don't seem as ridiculously unrealistic as the Tidal ones did. Kanye West's album getting 300 million streams on release week on a streaming service nobody used was laughable. The Amazon numbers are at least feasibly possible to the point where I don't feel convinced they're fake.

I don't know if some of you might remember, but a few years ago Tidal ended up being caught faking their streaming figures, and Billboard removed them from their charts. (I've just had a quick look in the Internet to find out more exact details but it seems to have been largely brushed under the carpet somehow but I'm 99% sure this happened, I can't have imagined it).
  17. Ah ok thanks. That explains some of the posts I've read of people panicking that this is Sam Fender's last chance to be in the top 10 lol. I didn't understand why people thought that. Although to me it's an arbitrary rule, probably the most arbitrary rule yet in the streaming era for the singles chart as it's not simply numerical (3 songs rule or 3 years ACR rule) or even music industry related (like labels nominating singles for a reset) but a one-off rule for 1 or 2 weeks only as a result of cultural celebrations (which would potentially open the door to them being able to make a special rule only for Christmas songs in December if they've set a precedent with this rule).
  18. Well, maybe I don't understand how it works, but I imagine it'll be back on SCR at New Year's surely? I don't think it will be like Mr. Brightside though. I seems more like an I Gotta Feeling. Although as another poster said it wasn't as overplayed as I Gotta Feeling (or at least it didn't seem very overplayed from what I experienced) so that should help the longevity of Blinding Lights.
  19. My favourites are: 1. Cold Rock A Party 2. Ice Box 3. Cold Shoulder 4. Frozen I like Baby, It's Cold Outside as well. Most of them I don't even know. I can't even remember the Girls Aloud song from the title, but I do remember them having a song that sounded like Wonderwall so I probably do know it.

Danny Byrd & D Double E - Selecta I'm really shocked to see these two on a Radio 1 playlist in 2021! :o I used to be fans of both if them about 10 years ago.
  21. Stay I think has to be one of the most common as well, I can think of so many.

That doesn't make any sense. A cassette player doesn't need to be signed to play signed cassettes, and you can't play CDs in a cassette player.
  23. I saw more people comparing Shape Of You to Cheap Thrills at the time. I don't think it's really similar to Starboy, except the vocal melodies where I do see some similarity now I think about it, but I would have never noticed if it wasn't pointed out.
  24. Possibly. Maybe Coldplay are the ones who overperformed. But it will probably take years to figure it out, like we might get to the end of the decade and these recent albums might have the highest first-week sales of the decade, and we'll look back at this differently.
  25. I'm just laughing at the fact that Wretch 32 is featured on a song called Don't Go.
