  1. A worthy winner - instantly recognisable, and a soundtrack to my teenage parties despite them being a decade later than the song came out. Thank you King Rollo for a very enjoyable rate!
  2. Nooooo. The thing I wanted most in this rate was for the brilliant Disco 2000 to finish as the top indie / 90s track ahead of Creep, which imo is the one grossly overrated single by an otherwise incredible band. I was actually low key hoping Disco 2000 might win. Still, 4th is pretty good.
  3. Really interesting to see the #2 rate, which is the one before I started taking part. My vote would likely have pushed Children, Common People, Born Slippy, Set You Free, Let It Be and Tender up the most!
  4. One is fantastic, deserved top 10 here. Though the less said about the unnecessary remake with Mary J Blige, the better. Perhaps that counted against it. I'm With You and Basket Case also stand-outs. I thought Boulevard... was quite an underwhelming winner of the #5s rate, for me Basket Case winning this would have felt more fitting, it feels like their most iconic track.

+5 The Giver +4 Beautiful Things +3 Abracadabra +2 Sports Car +1 Carry You Home -1 Pink Pony Club -2 Anxiety -3 Pink Pony Club -4 Busy Woman -5 Bad Dreams
  6. And now two excellent modern-era songs. Granted Faded is over 10 years old now but still sounds pretty timeless to me!

Dreadful top 10 all in all. Would have been better if PPC and Beautiful Things were new rather than decades old. +5 The Giver +4 Beautiful Things +3 Abracadabra +2 Sports Car +1 Evil Jordan -1 Pink Pony Club -2 Ordinary -3 Rather Lie -4 Busy Woman -5 Anxiety
  8. Woahhhh new Wet Leg?! Didn't know this was happening! Is it the kead single from a new album do we know? Likewise Linkin Park is that from a new album or a deluxe of the existing?
  9. Two classic songs there from Alanis and The Verve. And controversy from Mango! I do agree that the singles are disproportionately outstanding compared to the rest of the album. But I've got to give a shout out to Velvet Morning at least, it's gorgeous. Also didn't realise til reading Wikipedia just now that Urban Hymns sold quarter of a million copies in its first week, I thought it was a bit of a sleeper hit.
  10. Dancing In The Moonlight is one of my least favourite songs ever, never mind in this rate, so I'm pleased to see it not troubling the upper reaches!

I haven't heard any of this week's new entries thanks to there being no chart show, so whether I vote this week depends on whether I get round to listening to them!
  12. I first got aware of White Lines by noticing in the Guinness Hit Singles book that it had a crazy long chart run for something that only peaked at 7 (rare back in those days, not so much now!) And glad I did as it's a stone cold classic
  13. Do we expect anything from the new Yungblud song? I think it's superb, best thing he's done since his debut. But a 9-minute rock song released on a Tuesday suggests he's not prioritising chart performance.

  18. The first 7 songs listed here - many of which will probably get boosts this week despite having been around since the Cretaceous period - are literally 7 of my least favourite songs of last year 😬
  19. Happy Ending is probably my favourite Mika song. I really enjoy Roy's version of I Drove All Night, probably should have given it more points. Despite loving Sigur Ros and also loving some of Chicane's work, Poppiholla never really clicked with me.
  20. Already lost my top 2 and my favourite new discovery from this semi final 😥. Though I did put Pulp artificially low and I think they'll be just fine...

  22. Actually sorry just realised that I deleted Garbage - Why Do You Love Me. That should be my +13. I'll add it in now if that's OK?
  23. Ah OK, that's fine. I think I just missed out a +13 altogether rather than accidentally deleting a song.
  24. Every year this rate introduces me to something brilliant that I hadn't heard before, and this year is no exception. Tori Amos - Pretty Good Year, superb! +25 The Seahorses - Blinded By The Sun +24 Robert Miles - Fable +23 U2 - One +22 Pulp - Disco 2000 +21 Alan Walker - Faded +20 Simple Minds - Don't You (Forget About Me) +19 Green Day - Basket Case +18 Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit +17 Glen Campbell - Wichita Lineman +16 Tori Amos - Pretty Good Year +15 Coldplay - Adventure Of A Lifetime +14 The Bravery - An Honest Mistake +13 Garbage - Why Do You Love Me +12 The Supremes - Stop! 25. Looking at the list of who's got through, I realise that almost all my favourites have gone and the small number of songs in this rate that I actively dislike have got through! Hoping for better in the second semi! Also I propose Love Inc autoqualify for the final for having four weeks at their peak position of 7! @jimwatts thanks for pointing out that Tonight Tonight actually climbed to its peak in its second week. No memory of that (though I was only 10 at the time!) but extraordinarily rare for indie / rock songs to do that in the second half of the 90s!
