  2. No-one who's ever heard it? 😅
  3. Am I reading that table correctly - that only 4 of the top 20 biggest YTD songs for 2026 were released in 2026?? Jesus wept. It's August!

Been absolutely obsessed with Westside Cowboy (and trying unsuccessfully to get tickets for any UK show) since I saw them on Jools the other month. If there's any justice they'll be huge

  6. Not these days but pretty much every man and woman from my parents' generation knew it. (And then it had a million selling cover in the 90s by Robson and Jerome but we don't need to talk about that)
  7. They made the result a bit obvious with Jack's hyping and the huge amount of time left at end of the show. Pretty underwhelmed about our new record. RMI is more of a One Dance than it is an Everything I Do... or an I Believe in terms of recognition and memorability
  8. The way Jack's been talking, he's set up the show to be a huge anticlimax if RMI doesn't get the record

Amused by the "Dai Dai will have its time again at the next World Cup" chat on the day the World Cup tears itself apart 😅

That earlier post saying as of now, in late July, just 20 songs released this year have made the Top 10... As someone who got into the charts in the late 90s, I find that staggering. You'd have hit 20 by early/mid February back then. I understand the argument that the charts are meant to reflect what's popular. But if everyone in Britain wanted to listen to Wonderwall in 1999, they'd play their Wonderwall single or What's The Story CD (that they bought in 1995) a few times. And those plays wouldn't count for any chart. Now they do count. And it's killing the top 40 stone dead. I think they have to change the rules somehow to narrow the time window of what music qualifies for the chart (just like physical availability did for decades pre streaming). Otherwise a few years from now it's hard to see where any new chart songs or artists are going to come from.

I agree that people should listen, and always have listened, to old music at least as much as whatever's come out in the last couple of months. At the same time, I want the top 40 to reflect whatever's come out in the last couple of months. That feels like its main job to me. A pretty static list of the songs across the whole history of music that people are listening to the most is... I don't know, just not very interesting or relevant. Certainly doesn't need presented every week. Once a year would do.

This! Brilliant post. I fear the notion of the "top 40 fan" is dwindling to near-zero given what the top 40 has become. I'm about 90% less interested than I used to be. 100% already for November and December.
