Afrika Shox and Govinda were both late cuts from my shortlist. This whole rate is making me nostalgic for the 90s, when listening to the top 40 every week, several tracks I'd never heard of nor knew to expect would appear as high new entries. The two I've just mentioned are good examples.

First time hearing that Driver 67 song - quite a unique concept! Meat Loaf, Darius, Manics and Bluetones were all in or near my points of the recent fallers. Though Cut Some Rug is my preferred Bluetones #7 - perhaps that's still to come.

Hahaha oh dear. What a massively disingenuous decision by BBC. Love Chappell, but if she makes the Sound Of... shortlist, never mind winning it, then the purpose of the award has changed so much since it's origins that they should rename it.

Assuming that Chappell was added to the list to give it extra stardust but they know deep down that her winning would go against the original spirit of it... then I think she'll be #2 and someone lesser known will win. Miles Smith being #4 has already devalued the entire exercise for me based on the dirges I've heard from him so far 😅

This is my first time hearing either the Housemartins or Greg Lake songs - both very nice! My dad did used to occasionally sing the first two lines of the Greg Lake song but I didn't know what it was. Would have given it double figures of points if I'd known it at the start of this rate!

Obviously a massive fan of the Beatles but have never much enjoyed She Loves You, so not sad about it missing the top 10. Half of the songs left I'd be more than happy to see win (Downtown, Pogues, Patience, Darkness and most of all Jeff Buckley)

I miss the days when the first few weeks of the year had loads of new, interesting, sometimes random stuff. (Early January #1s for Babylon Zoo, Tori Amos, Lady Gaga, Basshunter come to mind)

Chef 😍 absolutely love it. I've played it recently to younger mates who'd never heard it before - they thought it was hilarious and couldn't believe it was a UK number 1. I can't believe that Radio 1 used to play it with no censorship - I was 12 and knew all the words! Can't imagine they'd play it in full nowadays.
