  1. Totally agree. And before long it brainwashes your average British Spotify playlist user into believing that the Spotify-curated (and typically American) hits have been their favourites all along. Depressing.
  2. Between the X Factor years and the Ladbaby years I forgot how many one week wonder charity singles took Christmas #1
  3. Great to hear Mike Flowers Pops version of Wonderwall for the first time in about 20 years! And to hear Hoots Mon in full for possibly the first time ever!
  4. Working from the most recent songs backwards, this felt like quite a weak rate... until we hit the mid 90s. Think I longlisted more songs from 1996 than from all the years after 1996 put together! Ended up having to leave out so many classics. NB I've not chosen Enjoy The Silence seeing as it won the #6 rate! +30 Pulp – Disco 2000 (potential waste of the wildcard as this will likely get through anyway, but I can't risk it not!) +29 The Seahorses – Blinded by the Sun +28 Apollo 440 – Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Dub +27 U2 – One +26 The Smashing Pumpkins – Tonight, Tonight +25 Robert Miles – Fable +24 Simple Minds – Don't You (Forget About Me) +23 Alan Walker – Faded +22 Lasgo – Alone +21 Green Day – Basket Case +20 Cast – Live the Dream +19 Enya – Anywhere Is +18 Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit +17 DJ Quicksilver – Free +16 The Strokes – 12:51 +15 Wink – Higher State of Consciousness +14 Celine Dion – A New Day Has Come +13 All Saints – War of Nerves +12 Grandmaster Melle Mel – White Lines (Don't Don't Do It) +11 Meat Loaf – Not a Dry Eye in the House +10 Elton John – Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting +9 Alanis Morissette – Head over Feet +8 Blur – Stereotypes +7 Manic Street Preachers – Australia +6 Iron Maiden – Run to the Hills +5 Supertramp – The Logical Song +4 Queen – You're My Best Friend +3 Darius – Live Twice +2 MOP feat. Busta Rhymes – Ante Up +1 Max Bygraves – Gilly Gilly Ossenfeffer Katzenellen Bogen by the Sea
  5. Country House v Roll With It for sure. Elton selling 2m+ in a week. And then Rage v Joe, but I do still remember listening to that one quite clearly!
  6. Some more votes to take mine up to 20... +9 Hoots Mon - Lord Rockingham’s XI (1958) +8 Sacred Trust / After You’re Gone - One True Voice (2002) +7 (Just Like) Starting Over - John Lennon (1980) +6 Rock Around The Clock - Bill Haley And His Comets (1955) +5 Especially For You - Kylie Minogue Featuring Jason Donovan (1988) +4 Impossible - James Arthur (2012) +3 The Climb - Joe McElderry (2009) +2 The Millennium Prayer - Cliff Richard (1999) +1 Wonderwall - Mike Flowers Pops (1995)

  8. I assume it's ok to vote for fewer than 20 ala the ROTD voting rules. But let me know if I need to add 9 more songs for my vote to be valid... +20 Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley (2008) +19 Chocolate Salty Balls - P.S. I'm going to dip out of the reshuffle while the Christmas takeover is in full effect but will be back in the new year!

Not sure I've heard the song that won. Maybe it's even worse than #2 and #3. They definitely deserve their top 3 placings though. "Whatever" basically epitomises everything I hate about lazy producers and rent-a-vocalists taking classic songs and dragging them down the drain.

Alibi too low. Just unbearably grating with the sample of a song that should be left well alone. I really like Beautiful Things! Can understand why it annoyed quite a few folk though

Kendrick and Benson Boone should be nowhere near the top 10 here. Whereas Teddy Swims and above all David Guetta should be well inside it. Every David Guetta phoned-in rehash of an old hit is so bad I actively have to change radio station even if it means getting up and walking to the radio (no I don't want an Alexa before anyone suggests!)

How is Stay Another Day not higher up? If you're going to do a cover of a classic, especially when you're a very credible artist, don't whatever you do make an utter b******s of it!

  20. The right winner for me out of the songs that made the top 10. Great job hosting danG, my favourite thread of the year as ever, thank you
  21. Agree with the above comment about Doomscroller being a great gateway into Metric, whose entire discography I now love. And this very rate was my introduction to Doomscroller in the first place, so thank you Buzzjack! The #11-15 section has knocked out all my remaining favourites (Kaarija, Faded and above all my +40 Last Man On Earth). But delighted at Kaarija and Wolf Alice being so high. Physical, Escapism and Billie are the only songs left I much enjoy so I'm rooting for one of them to win, probably in that order.

These new rules are nonsense. So for example Arctic Monkeys could have been nominated for the 2007 Sound Of list despite having already had two No 1 singles and the fastest selling UK debut album of all time*? *(by a group? Can't remember exactly what record it broke)
  23. A superb section there. Anywhere is good pop, the other 4 are worldies. Doomscroller and Happier Than Ever were my +39 and +38 - delighted and amazed Doomscroller has cracked the top 20. Slightly disappointed that Happier Than Ever isn't pushing the top 10, especially as it might get swamped by her Hit Me Hard And Soft tracks next year.
  24. A strong 21-30 but perhaps more to the point I am *buzzing* that Metric, Cha Cha Cha and Last Man On Earth have all made the top 20! Of the group just to have gone, I really enjoyed Padam Padam and Miracle from artists I'm not usually that into. Happy to see them this high although, given the usual tastes on this forum, perhaps surprised they're not a little higher still. Tattoo also excellent and deserves to be top 25. The jump for I'm Good Blue is an egregious outlier for me in an otherwise very strong section!
