Just now, Liam S said: The problem for Ed is that he has huge promo. BBC articles, ITV news segments. Ads on TikTok, open top bus through London and it’s a pretty catchy decent song and had the best playlisting possible and still had pretty underwhelming numbers so all that combined kind of points in the direction he’s either more an album artist now or people just don’t need any more Ed Sheeran and we’ve got the best out of him already. Some will say it’s jumping the gun and too soon but this guy was dominating billboard and now can’t break top 200 on Apple Music in the US, this guy caused the OCC to change the chart because he had so many songs charting and now 300k? Yeah it’s a different era
This is way over the top, just because he didn't go straight in at number 1 doesn't mean he's completely washed. I don't even like the guy's music and am happy for his domination to end but he's not going to become just "an albums artist" at the drop of a hat like you're suggesting. And as I've mentioned in the past traditional marketing doesn't make nearly as big of a difference as before for streaming. It's not even like the debut is that colossal of a fall-off anyway, the way you're going about it it's like he didn't debut top 40!

Nah no way. He's in decline for sure but not quite that level! He's probably looking at a top 5 debut which despite a previous track record of insta number ones is still nothing to sneeze at...

Last time this happened was with Olivia Rodrigo in 2021 (then again this was after a song she did for High School Musical charted). Think it will only happen if a song blows up extremely fast on TikTok or someone with a massive TikTok following who has never released before teases a single for ages and releases it. In a way the fact it barely happens today is a good thing, makes the achievement more satisfying. Also an extra 2 cents, in the TikTok/streaming world it seems authenticity is appreciated much more so I don't think an artist with loads of traditional major label marketing would be able to debut at the top anymore.

One is a very touching song and one I have a soft spot for, shame it didn't quite hit top 10. Rehab, Stronger and I'm With You are songs by great artists but all have other songs I prefer, especially Britney. I thank Green Day's Dookie album for inadvertently getting me interested in "real" music (aka outside of movie/game OSTs), Basket Case has helped me form my current tastes so had to place it highly 😁

I'd say Sabrina and Chappell are equally as famous. They are both constantly brought up by everyone I know and "Hot To Go" has even become a local meme because of how often a club near us plays it. Even my grandma knows who she is and that's without me telling her!
