Friday Chart Predictions
Remembering the days of fresh new entries from numerous genres in the charts on a weekly basis sadly seems like history now! The vast majority of people I have spoken to about the charts recently, said they did not know it still existed.! Last week Baby shark was back in the top 100 rather than a new entry from an artist who needs a debut to assist their career. Also the Killers with Mr Brightside should also be removed and placed in an archive chart unless it is being re-promoted for some reason. I remember a couple of years ago Luca Haeni missed the top 100 by a few slots due to these long running songs. In the pre streaming era, you would not keep buying the same record, so we need to find a way to stop counting massive repeat listening. Maybe this could be capped. But something needs to change to first of all promote the chart better (maybe a Chart Show video clip programme) on network Tv and second it definitely needs to be less stale and promote more artists. Still waiting for new music from 2022 to happen and we are now entering March!

Have R1 first look something against this track? Last week did not even report it in the top 20 and this week do not play it even though it is particularly high.

Friday Chart Predictions
These resets make the charts so stale. January should be about fresh music for 2022. I wonder will we see a trend of more music from musical films charting more regularly. Is there any chance 30/90 from Tick Tick Boom can survive in the top 100 by Friday? Would like to see that happen.

Is there a chance that "Magic" by Laura Mvula could go top 100? And will "Zitti e buoni" go on ACR soon to allow "Coraline" to perhaps replace it?

Friday Chart Predictions
Amazing to see Maneskin chart with yet another song. I am particularly loving "Coraline" from them. Is there a chance this will hit the top 100 anytime soon?

Friday Chart Predictions
Still not enough chart movement, lets hope Noizu and Fred Again & Blessed Madonna reach the top 40. It is so odd that the album chart is more interesting almost every week. Years ago it was the opposite.

Friday Chart Predictions
A very disappointing chart once again. If I had been told years ago that there would be a week in which the only new entries to the charts in the top 40 were all from Justin Bieber and that over a quarter of the top 100 were there for 20 weeks and over, I would not have believed it. And this is not an unusual phenomenon. We have only had 2 No1s in 2021 and this week apart from Bieber again there is limited movement. A friend has 2 teenagers and neither of them are even aware there are music charts anymore. To survive into the future, music charts have to be relevant (so have more variety) and promoted on tv. A show with a mixture of singles and album charts would be best. The BBC are a national broadcaster which have a remit to cater for everyone and so should have to broadcast the national charts even if viewing figures are low. But to be interesting there has to be actual turnover. Without ACR the charts would be dead, lets be honest they are on life support at the moment!

Friday Chart Predictions
The singles chart still needs a bit of refining. Dance monkey, Someone you loved, Shallow, Perfect, Baby Shark, Mr Brightside preventing other songs from charting. Jessie Ware with "Remember where you are" could stay top 100 and Duncan Laurence could get a new peak only for those tracks. If streaming an album counts towards the individual track as well, then buying an album should also contribute to an individual track also. Fair is fair.

Hoping that Bicep can stay in the top 40 with the highly original "Apricots". Does anyone know why 2019 Eurovision winner Duncan Laurence has been in the top 100 for the last 2 weeks again?

Friday Chart Predictions
The Kings of Leon released 2 songs this week. I notice "The Bandit" is at 55 but no sign of the other track "100,000 people" which I prefer. Is there any chance it will also make the top 100 by Friday?

If Wham miss out by a few sales due to the lack of information from the UK Chart company that will be a disgrace. We should be better informed to know how close this race actually is today.

Top of the Pops Specials 2020
I thought the Christmas Day TOTP was excellent. There is no reason the BBC could not make this programme weekly concentrating on a mixture of singles and albums charts. The national broadcaster should be providing a platform for all genres in music. It would also provide much a needed profile to many acts.

Is there any chance the excellent Songhoy Blues from Mali can score a top 100 hit in the album chart this week?

Friday Chart Predictions
Sorry to ask a query about last week's chart. How come the Spanish girl group Hinds with "The Prettiest Curse" were showing at No24 in the album midweeks but then failed to stay in the top 100 by the time of the official weekly chart. Surely even with no sales in the second half of the week it would stay at least top 100 having been 24? Was it removed from the charts?

Welcome to Chart Chat!
I take your point, that would be unfair on "Stitches" at this stage. Perhaps my rule should only apply once a track leaves the top 20. I think there was a rule in the 1980's if a song had left the top 40 and had gone down for two/three weeks in a row (maybe more) it was removed. Eurovision will be coming up soon and with sales now so insignificant compared to streaming I can't see too many of the entries reaching the charts anymore. Indeed any new song reaching the top 100 is an achievement these days.

10 years ago today...
Great to look at a chart when there was still variety and actually new entries!

Welcome to Chart Chat!
I have subscribed to Music Week for 25 years and for a large portion of that time, singles were used as a vehicle to bring music consumers to albums eventually. Singles were regularly deleted or stock not replaced in the past. "Love is all around" by Wet Wet Wet is just one famous example but it went on all the time. In the 1980's the lower end of the charts, singles were removed from the countdown, I think in the positions 75-100. So it has been done before. In this era, there needs to be a happy medium because the general public has lost interest in the chart and who can blame them when it is so stale. The dominance of streaming which is influenced by playlists set up by Spotify means it is not a level playing field. I know it never was but at least there was variety. Anyway, I still think it would be interesting to see what the singles chart would look like if songs were removed once they reach 27 weeks. I don't think any of us would miss "Uptown funk" or "Thinking out loud" at this stage, it is not as if it they are actually a single anymore in the strict sense of the original concept but are now a catalogue item which hangs around forever because of the current rules. What I am proposing would not bring "hyped" songs to No1 either!

Dance Chart Number Ones 1990 - 1999
"Free" deserved to chart higher than No 4 and I thought it would. I was a huge fan of Ultra Nate and bought her earlier singles. "Is it love?" is a great gospel tinged house track. Is it love? "A Deeper Love (Missing you)" also deserves your attention. "Blue notes from the basement" a classic dance album and much underrated.

Welcome to Chart Chat!
I am one of those people that think the Singles chart is too slow these days and no longer serves part of its purpose which is to promote music to new consumers who then go onto listen/buy albums from artists. Even if that is no longer a valid reason it still isn't really a singles chart anymore but a song chart and as we know album tracks from a big release and songs from over a year ago are now clogging it up preventing artists getting any entry. In fact many weeks there are as little as three entries into the entire top 100! It also makes it difficult to compare to previous eras as so many songs now total a huge amount of weeks on the chart. This week there are 30 songs in the top 100 over 26 weeks or half a year. Can Buzzjack publish what the top 100 chart would look like if any track is removed after 26 weeks. Would this allow a greater flow to and fro and make it slightly more interesting?
