  1. They embrace it. When some friends realised that I could name a lot of songs from the 1st second or 2, made this into a game whilst we were in the car.

What they didn’t realise is that I actually realised what was going to come next on the playlist before they played it 🤣

Then I have friends like @Jessie Where who are similar to me, and we can discuss and debate chart rules and regulations.

And I handle their disinterested when I feed them a really (un) interesting fact about chart history 🤣

Very pleased to see 'Slow' finally get passed the Silver mark. Strange it's taken so long, it's much more of a classic than its sales would suggest and doesn't deserve to be a part of this list of #1 songs that haven't yet been certified (2000+ only):

Manic Street Preachers - The Masses Against the Classes (2000)

Busted - You Said No (2003)

Daniel Bedingfield - Never Gonna Leave Your Side (2003)

    Busted - Who's David? (2004)

Wow! Almost all charity singles, novelties, reality TV spin offs, boy bands and ex boy band members!

The biggest surprises for me are Manic Street Preachers and Daniel Bedingfield - as well as the two Busted tracks - though I guess Busted had already sold hundreds of thousands of albums by the time those singles were released.

But yes - very strange that ‘Slow’ was in that very short list. A very underrated track.

  5. Not quite the same: but it reminded me that the original version of Dreams by Gabrielle was pulled after getting loads of airplay because of the uncleared sample (or likeness) of Fast Car.

Nonetheless it set a new record for the highest debuting debut single of all time.

Please correct me if I’m wrong

I notice on Spotify's chart, 'Azizam' now appears as 'Azizam (feat. Googoosh) [Persian Version]' - didn't know this existed! Fairly sure the original is still getting most of its streams though.

This sometimes happens when the music is identical (rather than remixed). The two versions get muddled up and combined. Something similar happened to Mae Muller ‘I Wrote A Song’ if my memory serves me correctly.

It's only the 2nd song after Bryan Adams' "Summer of '69" to go 5x platinum and missed the top 40. The first to go 5x platinum and miss the top 75.

Does anyone know the next biggest selling single to miss the top 75 and the biggest to miss the top 100?

  9. thanks for the update @Gezza very mucho appreciated

so for studio albums the top 10 looks like:

    9 Fleetwood Mac - Rumours 843,000 (T/S 5,077,000)

I just find it amazing that such an old studio album, more than 45 years old, can still be one of the 10 biggest studio albums of the decade so far. Especially when it had no big hits in the UK at the time - none of them made the top 20. Part of the secret is in still having 3 massively streamed songs: Dreams, The Chain and Go Your Own Way. But I think also the album itself, unlike many other albums, is genuinely streamed as a whole.

  10. 25 Evanescence - My Immortal

    24 Lady Gaga - Alejandro

23 Tori Amos - Pretty Good Year

    22 Pulp - Disco 2000

    21 t.A.T.u. - Not Gonna Get Us

20 Green Day - Basket Case

    19 Dolly Parton - Jolene

    18 Mika - Happy Ending

17 Roy Orbison - I Drove All Night

16 Sugababes – Stronger / Angels With Dirty Faces

    15 Britney Spears - Stronger

14 Elton John - Your Song

    13 Yello - The Race

    12 U2 - One

11 Gossip - Standing In The Way Of Control

10 The Bravery - An Honest Mistake

9 Demi Lovato - Cool For The Summer

    8 Robert Miles - Fable

7 Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit

6 Kelly Clarkson - Because Of You

5 Kygo and Selena Gomez – It Ain't Me

    4 R.E.M. - Everybody Hurts

    3 Alan Walker - Faded

2 The Cure - The Love Cats

    1 Madonna - I'll Remember

  11. This has prompted me to look up his history of Christmas Number 1 chart campaigns:

2008: Ricky Astley, Never Gonna Give You Up - #73

    2009: RATM - #1

2011: Nirvana, Smells Like Teen Spirit - #11

    2012: The Justice Collective, He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother - #1

2013: ACDC, Highway to Hell -#4

2014: The Peace Collective, All Together Now - #70

    2017: Wham, Last Christmas - #2

    2020: The Kunts, Boris Johnson is a f***ing c**t - #5

    2021: The Kunts, Boris Johnson is STILL a f***ing c**t - #5

    2022: The Kunts, f*** the Tories - #7

    2023: The Pogues - #6

Despite his past success, I really don't see this taking off at all. All of the recent hits were either:

Directly related to Christmas - so they would have got tons of sales anyway. Odds are that both Wham and The Pogues would have charted in similar positions without a campaign, frankly.

    OR

Were actively being pushed and promoted as protest songs, with multiple versions for download. I can't see ELO playing the game and having 20 different versions on Bandcamp for 59p! They will also get virtually no streaming compared to the deluge of Christmas hits in the charts.

Also most were at times when downloading was the main contributor to the chart.
