Padam Padam ● 1st single
Great scouting! I’ve also checked everyone who has had a number 1 album in the 2020s, and everyone who has had 7 or more number one albums. I’m sure there are some other 80s artists who could join the list at a later date. Did your digging uncover Paul Weller? Because he had number one albums across five consecutive decades (80s-20s) before Kylie did. The biggest difference being that they weren’t all solo albums. But I have checked his singles record, and it doesn’t match the criteria. I didn’t even check The Jam - but Style Council hit number 1 in the 80s, then Paul Weller 00s - 20s

Yes. I’m pretty sure. I would probably need to check Paul Weller’s singles record, but I doubt he has had many top 10 singles for a long time. Can you remember who else has had number 1 albums in 5 decades?

Padam Padam ● 1st single
This is amazing news! It is great to see ‘Padam Padam’ having so much success globally on Apple Music. It is frustrating to see it only charting in 3 countries on Spotify. I have my own ideas, but it would be interesting to know why everybody else thinks there is so much difference between how well ’Padam Padam’ is doing on Apple and how well it is doing on Spotify.

I agree. This is a very special moment, and ‘Padam Padam’ is a very special song. I believe that this will lead to her highest opening week album sales in many years. It would be amazing if her next single does well, but if it doesn’t, it won’t make me unhappy. I have genuinely loved PP Since I first heard it. There is no way of knowing yet whether her next single will have the same impact.

We will all know more if you provide us with more information. I’m not closed to learning more about it - and I don’t think anyone here is. I have an opinion but I’m genuinely happy to have that opinion changed, Elijah. It’s only in voicing my opinion that I can be proved wrong. Likewise, when I disagree with you, it gives you the opportunity to prove me wrong.

Looking at new songs compared with Kylie: Padam Padam iTunes 2, 7, 9 Spotify 21 Apple 7 Leigh-Ann iTunes 1 Spotify 54 Apple 44 Peggy Gou iTunes 30 Spotify 8 Apple 36 Doja Cat iTunes 64 Spotify 22 Apple 166 Admittedly Apple doesn’t seem to have been updated for a little while. But Leigh-Ann would need a lot of sales to be above Kylie this week - even if she is higher in the First Look Chart. And it would be ironic if Peggy Gou - whose second biggest tune currently on Spotify is ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’ - debuts above ‘Padam Padam’ - but at present she is only above Kylie on Spotify.

Just looking for more evidence before I am convinced. I’m just not the kind of person who believes everything that they read. At present, everything I’ve read could have multiple explanations. I am delighted at how well ‘Padam Padam’ is doing in Australia and I think its peak is still to come. I certainly don’t know what Kylie’s record company’s strategy is in the UK! They are keeping us guessing. I have even less of an idea of their strategy in Australia. But I’d certainly like to hear their side of the story before I start attacking them.

New peak on Amazon Prime (#10). I think it’s higher than that on Amazon Music Unlimited.

BTW: PP now climbing to 7 on Apple Music above REACT. Woohoo!

I’m with you on this one Carol - though of course we could be wrong. We see so much on social media of people attacking record companies and radio stations, and publishing false information. For example, somebody pointed to the fact that Radio 1 didn’t tag Kylie in a post, as further proof of them being dismissive of her. This then get to take on his fact. We then get to find out that nobody can tag Kylie - but the ‘fact’ becomes embedded in our minds. Don’t get me wrong, I do completely agree that Radio 1 are avoiding Kylie because they feel that their listeners don’t want to hear her - but they are digging their heels, despite the fact that her song currently has broad appeal

And just as you said it, the following happens. 💥 PADAM 💥 Kylie climbs above REACT on Apple to a new peak of 7! That’s big news, as it is something that I thought wouldn’t happen. It just goes to show that overtime Kylie can take on the songs above her. Fingers crossed David Kushner goes to ACR (unless we have misjudged). Leigh-Anne is only at 42 on Apple after more than 24 hours; with Peggy Gou at 34 and Doja Cat at 170, and no other big new entries. Of these only Leigh-Anne is above Kylie on iTunes. Padam Padam is 2,7 and 8 on iTunes; and 1,2 and 9 on Apple Downloads. It remains to be seen, how well the new entries do on Spotify, and how many sales Leigh-Anne has, but it isn’t a given that she will be above Kylie. Whatever happens, Kylie stands a good chance of climbing, being a non-mover, or at least remaining in the top 10 for a second week.

Time to relax. Need a break from Padaming!

That’s brilliant! Someone on here claimed that it was plummeting right out of the top 40 again. I don’t know if it was the same person or a different person who also claimed that her record company had given up on the song in Australia.

I think in the end, taking everything into account, I predict: 9 Hannah Laing 10 Kylie 11 Rema 12 Loreen 13/14 Dave and Central Cee

Padam Padam: Week 4 Chart Predictions
Here are my projections for this week, compared with Kylie, without the cassettes, and therefore how many cassettes she would need to sell to overtake these songs. #9 Hannah Laing +600 #10 Rema +250 =#11 Kylie =#11 Dave/CC - Trojan Horse #13 Loreen -150 #14 Dave/CC - UK Rap -850 All six songs seem to be much closer than earlier on in the week. There are caveats - Hannah Laing could move even further ahead; will Loreen’s CD’s count towards this week’s chart? And it feels impossible to judge how well the Dave and Central Cee tracks will do. But overall I feel Kylie has a very good chance of being 10, possibly even 9.

Note, only three physical products can count towards the chart. We have already had to say there is only room for one more

Wonderful research. Thank you. Yes, I would agree that ‘Padam Padam’ is unique amongst this list - if it makes the top 10.

But in the context of this discussion, are any over 50? And how old were they when they had their last top 10 (solo and in collaboration). Sia is 47 - and her last solo top 10 hit was 7 years ago. P!nk is 43 - and her last solo top 10 hit was 3 years ago So both were around 40. The point here I guess is that it is very rare for older artists to have significant chart success. I don’t know whether there is a gender disparity. Personally I think it’s understandable - as younger music listeners typically have more agreement in their tastes - but also are more likely to be inspired by younger artists. It’s brilliant that Beyoncé etc have continued success! So when artists over 50 have chart success, it’s cause for celebration, whether it’s Cher or Kylie. I’m not sure if it’s just that I’m older now, but it certainly seemed that older artists had more hits back in the 90s.

Even more remarkable then that all of these guys in their mid-late 30s (with careers already at least 10 years old - in most cases 15 years) were beaten to the number 1 spot by Cher!

Good point. How old are each of them?

Thanks for those. I do genuinely believe that if we look at the 90s we would find a fair number of artists over the age of 50 having hits - both male and female (most of the artists I mentioned were probably in their 40s - certainly the first ones I mentioned had careers already lasting 15 years.)
