Will Radio 1 Chart Show be moved to a different day.
Since the Global Release Day is all about protecting the album market, I'm not sure why the singles chart *has* to change as well. OA/OS singles are now and presumably in the future would be released any time during the week. Back in 86/87 the five-days old R1 Top 40 countdown was already being made to look staid by the Network Chart, it would be so much worse now. Under the new schedule the iTunes chart on Friday evening would give a good indication of the following week's chart (as is the case on a Sunday now) but R1 wouldn't be playing that chart in full until 9 days later? The Sunday top 40 show just couldn't stay in its current slot, Friday evening would restrict on the dance programming, I guess a top 10 reveal in Friday drive time with the full top 40 on Saturday morning might be a good fit option if the singles chart compilation day has to move.

Record industry considering global release day
The independents spokesman in the Music Week article doesn't like the idea, but surely they can stick to a Monday release if they wanted to, and get some benefit from being the only new physical releases on a Monday, and get some chart position advantage assuming the charts are still compiled on a Sunday-Saturday basis. Shops that sell books, games, DVDs and CDs will be used to stocking different new releases on different days during the week so could cope with having new music batches on both Mondays and Fridays? I quite like the chart unpredictability you'd get from Friday releases in a Sunday-Saturday chart week.

Sales & Streaming
One unfortunate conclusion I am coming to is that the purity of a singles sales chart which I have enjoyed following for 30 years is going to become unviable, so either streams/airplay etc come in, or it remains a purchased sales chart and looks as ridiculously out of touch as the French singles chart was when it kept on excluding downloads even with minuscule physical sales.
-
Sales & Streaming
When I was thinking of revenue I was only considering physical sales, downloads and streams but the other elements you mention make it intriguing- the airplay revenue is probably trackable and calculable, PPS type public plays less so. Most of the licensing revenue from film use, samples etc would be commercially private deals but that would certainly be one easy but costly way for the big media conglomerates to rig the chart!
-
Sales & Streaming
I presume spotify, deezer etc pay a fixed price per stream to the relevant record label, rather than a fraction of each user's monthly fee depending on how many streams that individual user has "consumed", and it would be that fixed price that would be incorporated into the main chart? Don't know how robust a system could be against fixing, but there could be a limit on the number of countable streams from a single IP address? And as streaming really takes off, it might require several hundred thousand plays a week to seriously rig the chart. I wouldn't be in favour of it, but I think at some point the singles chart will need to be a revenue chart, like the movies box office chart rather than a unit sales chart.

iTunes Weekly Thread W/C 10th November 2013
They did do Somewhere Only We Know, and as usual a good version of it, but it was only shown on the red button extras after the main BBC1 show Btw, I saw that Keane had a guitarist on stage with them, when did they abandon the no-guitars policy?

Holiday Anthems of the 21st Century
Today's challenge: find one single person who would classify Sandi Thom's I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker as a "holiday anthem"?

Sunday Chart Predictions
There have been plenty of different approaches over the years as to how many of the lower placed tracks got played in full, or played at all, but I think top 10 songs have always been played, the most recent top 10 hit not to get a play on the chart show might be George Michael I Want Your Sex in 1987 when it had a pre-watershed ban? Although I have some memory that they might have played the instrumental then?

Sunday Chart Predictions
twitter updates from @officialcharts seem to suggest they haven't made a final decision on Bowie eligibility yet...
-
Sunday Chart Predictions
Would quite like to see Bowie get to number 1 but if that can't happen then I'd be happy for the consolation of adding a new track to the trivia list of supposedly denied number 1's like Groove Is In The Heart, God Save The Queen and Stop the Cavelry.

What other old acts would you like to see back in the charts
Agree- I love "Live"

Sunday Chart Predictions
If there's a chance that this week's biggest selling track can't make number 1 then they should urgently look at a change of rules, and they did set a precedent for changing eligibility rules "on the hoof"- at the end of 2006 Fairytale of New York should have been chart ineligible as it had already had the maximum 52 chart weeks allowed following the 2005 physical re-release, and before the chart rules changed at the start of 2007 to allow all downloads regardless of a linked physical release. But it was included in the last chart of 2006 to avoid a hard to explain sudden disappearance from the chart, when it could have re-entered the following week anyway. Even in that really messy 2006 era when singles were getting deleted out if the chart at record companies' whims and downloads could only count in the week of or the week before the physical release, I don't think a non-chart eligible single was ever the week's true best seller, Gnarls Barkley Crazy was deleted after it fell from Number 1 and if I remember correctly from reports at the time it would have only gone as high as number 3 for the early weeks of download sales when it was chart inelligible?

What do you think will be Christmas No.1 album?
No-one thinks Olly Murs has a chance? He did have the Christmas number 3 album last year, behind big selling Michael Buble and Amy Winehouse albums. I don't think any albums this year are going to be getting close to the Buble/Winehouse sales of last year so Olly will be close. I reckon OneDirection are going to get big sales from post-Xmas iTunes gift card sales, the pre-Christmas CD present sales will go to Rod Stewart, Olly Murs and a bit of Buble?

Sunday music stats
I was born in January 1975, I wonder if there's ever been a singles chart entirely made up of acts younger than me, if not yet then it looks like it's coming soon :( (goes to look at the album list to feel younger) Great bit of research by the way

Christmas #1 chart battle
I'm not sure what to make of the Hillsborough single's Number 1 prospects yet. The cause, as I understand it, is to raise funds for judicial reviews and other legal challenges starting with new inquests. These are widely supported demands, but I wonder if the BBC might see it as too political and back away from much airplay/ support (which would only be on Radio 2 anyway, even if Radio 1-friendly acts appear on the record I can't see them playing any version of He Ain't Heavy). The Hillsborough group certainly has an effective marketing presence, witness the very large amount of coverage that the announcement of the plans for the record got. But, it has been quiet since that initial announcement, has the single been recorded yet, is there a possibility it might not come off, at least not in time for Xmas? Paddy Power currently has the Hillsborough single as 18/25 favourite for the Xmas Number 1.
