Essentially- The Pet Shop Boys Rate!
DJ Culture is probably mid level PSBs for me (a 6) but I’m not really a fan of Somewhere, certainly low down on their best cover versions. I gave a 5

I like Summer, though perhaps not top tier Calvin. I have a soft spot for the songs he uses his own vocals on.

The UK Top 40 singles of the 1980s: listening sessions + polls: next session 8 Nov
Sorry I couldn’t make yesterday’s listening session everyone, it looks like it was a really good one! I know I say this pretty much every week, but this one was particularly difficult to choose. The Smiths - The Boy With The Thorn In His Side (a very strong contender for my all time favourite song) A-ha - Take On Me Feargal Sharkey - A Good Heart Talking Heads - Road To Nowhere The Waterboys - The Whole Of The Moon (LCD Soundsystem and friends did an excellent sprawling dance cover version of this for charity last month. Don’t know if anyone else heard it, sounds a bit like Saint Etienne to me!) Also, just wanted to let you all know, I’ll probably be around the forum a bit less over the next couple of months or so, one of my very close family is going through a major health issue right now and I need to be there for her as much as I can. I apologise if this isn’t the right place to put this message, but I hoped most of my friends would see it here?

Slightly edged by Prayer in C for me but still a great dance record. Robin Schulz having a great year.

The lesser of the Liza singles, I gave a 6

Prayer In C is great, though I think it passed me by a bit at the time. One of quite a number of excellent dance records in your top 10 I think?!

It Doesn’t Often Snow… is another 5 for me, nothing special. At least there’s a Christmas number one to come.

Unknown Pleasures 36: RESULTS
Oh I loved Love Ruins Everything! On the strength of your recommendation I’ve been exploring the Tiny Habits’ ‘Keepers’ album, and have also fallen in love with the gorgeous, more folk tinged, Anything He Was, so thank you so much. A great choice!

Unknown Pleasures 36: RESULTS
Congratulations @Chez VampireBat ! PISS are a fantastic band, and ‘blocking a scene you can't remember’ was the only song from the nominations that I’d already heard before the contest started. At that time I had no prior knowledge of the band or song, so was completely unprepared, and it did take my breath away. I’ve found it really difficult to listen to again though, a bit like how I feel about songs like Dave & Ruelle’s ‘Lesley’ and Rhoda Dakar & The Special’s ‘The Boiler’. Thanks for anyone who gave me votes, despite my overall rubbish result. Most of all thanks to @matto for some really fantastic hosting in such difficult circumstances, I hope things are working out for you.🙏 And of course, thanks for the shout out over my voting messages!!😆

Oh I’m another who definitely prefers So Sorry I Said over Don’t Drop Bombs. It’s great and I gave it a 7, listening again I probably should have gone higher!

Some excellent non top 2 mega hits there Jester, I like them all but especially Sia and the wonderful Katy B.

Leaving is not bad, just not very memorable, 5.5 from me

Don’t like a lot of the later collaborations, gave this a 5 also, it’s okay.

Ghost might be my favourite single from any of the X Factor alumni. Excellent vocals and great gospel vibes.

Love Timber, great fun!

I like it a bit more than Happy, it certainly has a lot of energy, does suffer from overplaying too though. Was it right that Fleur East’s performance on X Factor had happened without permission, causing an earlier release than planned, or was that just a rumour at the time? Version was great as you said, I also have a soft spot for Late Night Feelings, as another Ronson collaborative album.

Hmmm, not great. I gave a 5.5

Julian rates every Top 40 hit: the 1980s edition
I think Grimly Fiendish was new to me, but it’s a great discovery. Life In A Northern Town is gorgeous, and sounds ahead of it’s time, maybe due to the sampled use? Love Is Battlefield is excellent pop rock and well deserving of its resurgence. Shakespeare’s Sister is one of The Smiths many great rockabilly influenced songs, a short sharp blast of energy. Very underrated amongst their singles I’d forgotten about Clouds Across The Moon but it’s fantastic and quirky/unique sounding Black Man Ray is more China Crisis loveliness One More Night is very pretty, though I always felt it to be a surprising US number one

Yeah, I think with hindsight I was a little harsh previously, it’s not bad, and is certainly catchy. I just think it’s a bit bland, very repetitive and massively overexposed. I think it’s therefore about mid list in 2014 too.

Winner isn’t the best (of course) but it’s alright. There’s definitely worse to come (er…some of those collaborations). Gave it a quite generous (I now think) six. As an aside, I didn’t realise it had happened, but The Pet Shop Boys ever being reduced to supporting Take That of all people, is a sad indictment of UK music.
