Julian rates every Top 40 hit: the 1980s edition
Some really great songs in this section. Every Breath You Take, despite its overexposure, is still such an unusual song with its dark theme smuggled in behind a fantastic pop rock ballad and that iconic melody. I too love Waiting For A Train especially the rhythm, very clever song. Shipbuilding is gorgeous with very emotive anti war sentiments, I think at the time even Elvis Costello admitted that the Robert Wyatt version was the definitive one. Nobody’s Diary is another wonderful Yazoo single, I love all those early singles and, thanks to your thread, I finally got round to buying their 2 albums on vinyl! In A Big Country is great euphoric rock, right up with the Skid’s best Bad Boys is a great example of early Wham! energetic pop and social commentary, another example of George’s versatility.

Yes a bit chaotic, it just feels like squeezing in too many collaborators and trying to get one too many singles from the album

Human Nature is such a gorgeous song!

Okay, 808s absolutely is an all time great album! As regards Derulo, In My Head is okay and Whatcha Say is a banger, but mainly due to Imogen Heap of course.

Yes I agree. In the ‘Best Song Contest…Lottery’ (which was my very first BJs contest) I sent a song that leaned more towards something I thought others might like. This time I primarily chose one I love, but it’s a bit unusual and I feel it might bomb in the voting!

I do like Beautiful Monster but rarely seek it out

My dilemma has been choosing between a song I like or one I think others would like. What do you all prefer to do?

I like Pato’s cover version with its uptempo reggae vibes, I just prefer the original a bit more

I agree When We Collide was a vastly inferior version to the original, as you say at least it gave Biffy Clyro some much deserved publicity. The thing I found most annoying was the change of the name of the song, X Factor not only butchering another great song but also ignoring the writers choice of title. Did they think the GP couldn’t cope with ‘Many of Horror’, was Horror not considered an appropriate word at Christmas?! However I think Matt was/is a great vocalist, and in common with many from the show, he just needed some decent (new) material to work with. His subsequent solo career, often self written, was/is good. I once saw him doing an intimate acoustic set a few years ago and he was absolutely fantastic and quite compelling in his performance.

Wow, Black Eyed Peas certainly went downhill quickly. ‘Dirty Bit’ indeed! Also when does the Cowell, Syco, X Factor influence come to an end?

Another poor JLS song, shame because compared with many X Factor ‘alumni’ they had a decent start to their career. I have to admit I didn’t remember this at all before re listening, and I can now see why.
