Julian rates every Top 40 hit: the 1980s edition
Quick catch up on the previous group! Love Self Control’s big vocals. Eyes Without A Face is wonderfully moody. Come Back is great, deserved a bigger hit. Seven Seas is probably my favourite of these It’s A Hard Life is good if not one of my Queen songs in that era. Whatever I Do is epic. You Think You’re A Man is one of a kind. Hole in My Shoe always brings a smile

RabbitFurCoat Ranks the 2012 #1s
Just making a quick catch up, while I have some internet connection! Part Of Me is a lesser Katie single, not too memorable. Bom Bom is excellent, a true one off song. Chaotic and energetic, probably what drinking rum in pints does for you! Gangnam Style is undeniable isn’t it, a true force of nature at the time. Great fun. I like Hot Right Now, propulsive drum and bass and still one of Rita’s best. Beneath Your Beautiful is lovely, I’ve always had a soft spot for it. Especially the orchestral bits and the female/male vocals together. I do like Spectrum a lot, updating a song I was already fond of into a great dance banger. Florence’s vocals certainly suited the uptempo beat. With your top 8 still to come, I have 5 of my own top 8 left, including my top 3!

EDITION 14: The Best Song Contest in the World... Ever! ~ Singer Songwriter
I’m out of the country for the next couple of weeks with (mostly) poor internet access. I’d love to join in but not if I can’t get a decent listen to the songs before I can vote. Have you any idea about time scales for voting deadlines to see if I can manage it?

Twelve of my top 15 still remaining, including my top 6! I also think one of the two songs you’re talking about is in my top 6, I love it though I’m sure many will hate it!

I like Call My Name, I agree it’s one of Cheryl’s best singles.

Saint Clair - Something To Be Said
Another excellent alt rock band with their debut EP
-
Tooth - Restless In Bloom
Great EP! This is my favourite from it.

Little Grandad
One of a few newish British indie bands I’ve been listening to. Excellent and a bit eclectic across their 3 songs so far

Yeah Levels is my favourite Avicii singles and it feels that Good Feeling is unnecessary. I think I’d have it in a similar place as you. Something’s Got A Hold In Me is fantastic though!

Troublemaker is okay, and like pretty much all of Olly’s big singles it just doesn’t excite me at all and is pretty forgettable. Sounds very Maroon 5 to my ears too.

When Doves Cry is my favourite Prince song, truly fantastic. I love Time After Time too, one of the best 80s ballads. Tina’s What’s Love… is something I enjoy and admire but don’t quite love. Perfect Skin is great, ‘perfect’ intelligent pop, Rattlesnakes is one of the best indie albums of the 80s. Young At Heart is exuberant and always brings a smile. Goodnight Saigon is outstanding and emotive.

I really like Diamonds, probably the first of my top ten to appear here. At the time I thought it was quite brave to have it as first single from a new album, but looking back Rihanna always had incredible instincts for that.

Slayyyter - brand new chanel$
Brilliant song! Can’t wait for another album

Favourite song with a US State in the title
Great idea! Would these count? (Sorry if they’re wrong, I’m not from the US😬)

I’d have White Lines just pipping Two Tribes as my favourite of these. Both brilliant songs though. White Lines is such a foundational hip hop record, and I love Two Tribes’ ‘all in’ sound and driving rhythm. No slight on the other songs here, I Won’t Let The Sun… is great political pop and Jump is energetic, though I slightly prefer Automatic. Talking Loud and Clear is pretty, and I Absolute is more quirky pop but I agree that Wood Beez is better.

Hall Of Fame is pleasant enough with a pretty memorable chorus, though nothing earth shattering. The extra exposure from The Voice giving it an extra push to the number one.

I got them all back in the day, excellent groundbreaking albums and well worth getting if you can seek them out!

The BuzzJack Friday Chart Show Thread: 31st July 2026
As a chart fan I can’t say I’ve ever enjoyed any song staying at number one for an extended period, like double figures, even if I liked the actual song.

Yes I agree, Wings certainly set out the girl’s distinctive sound and identity early on. Although this isn’t one of my favourite song of theirs they were just finding their feet and they would go on to become my favourite act of the X Factor alumni.

Friday Chart Predictions
What, not even One Dance!😆 I think I’d probably include Despacito in that ‘unique’ 11 week number one group too

Dove Ellis - Blizzard
Nomination in the bag!
-
Mercury Prize 2026
Of course I’m happy Dove Ellis is there because it is the best British/Irish album of the last 12 months. I thought it obvious Olivia and RAYE would get a nomination, it seems the list is more driven by commercial success each year, becoming more like the Brit Awards it was meant to be an alternative to?! Where’s all the ‘new’ artists? What could probably be considered legacy acts also filling up the list. Look I love Suede, Paul McCartney and Florence and the Machine but I can’t say any have released their best albums in the last year, and it’s hardly pushing musical boundaries in having them here. Agreed Help (2) is a really odd choice, if it wins exactly which artist are they saying has made the best album of the year? I think there’s a precedent though, wasn’t the first Help album also nominated back in the day?
