Suede certainly were a big deal in the early to mid ‘90s though, both commercially and critically. At the time I seem to remember it being talked of as the fastest-selling debut album ever in the UK and also won the Mercury Music Prize. They were trail blazers for other ‘britpop’ (I always hated that term) artists, successful before Blur and Pulp became really big and before Oasis released anything. Justine Frischmann, later of Elastica, was also a founder member. Yet they were different from the others, with their Bowie and glam rock influences I think they stood out from the crowd.

Yes I agree. The US pretty much ignored them and even gave them the ‘London Suede’ moniker, due to a trademark dispute with an American singer who’d already had the name Suede over there. ‘Our’ Suede may be more famous now for having Richard Osman’s brother Mat playing bass for them! 😆. Great band though especially their first 2 albums.

Been working my way through listening to all these great new album releases this week. Would recommend Suede, Shame, Saint Etienne and Big Thief. But especially the wonderful Hot Chip ‘best of’ (glad some artists are still doing this in the streaming era). Banger after banger, one of the most consistently great bands of the last 20+ years.
  8. Oh dear it’s a shame Big Moon came second to last, I think it’s a lovely slice of Pixies/Elastica influenced female fronted indie rock. I didn’t realise that Let It Happen was relatively obscure at first, it’s always been my favourite from that year even from its initial release.
  9. +30 Tame Impala - Let It Happen +29 Jamie xx & Romy - Loud Places +28 Snakehips, Tinashe & Chance The Rapper - All My Friends +27 Big Moon - Sucker +26 Kendrick Lamar - The Blacker The Berry +25 Kendrick Lamar - King Kunta +24 Grimes - Kill V. 10. Seconded by me, that’s a great song!
  11. One of my very favourites of his too. Maybe it will finally do a little better this year? Will certainly be getting a decent lot of points from me .
  12. Close but not quite! 😆
  13. Thanks for nominating this. It was the very last song I had to eliminate from my choices, so I’m glad it made it through.
  14. Hayley Williams ‘Ego Death…’ project sounds fantastic in its full album form. Probably her best yet.
  15. Would have picked this too, but you beat me to it 😆great choice! Such a beautiful song 😢 Must have been so convinced this would be an AQ that I missed it! Thanks for including.
  16. CMAT just released the best pop album of the year!

Fabulous old school R&B out this week!

I posted earlier in the chart week about how fantastic the new Dijon album is, but after several listens I’m now thinking it might be the best of the year. Pity it looks like it’s nowhere near the top 40.
  21. Ultimately my predicted winner won, but well deserved. Have to say this rate has been really good fun start to finish, from listening to new stuff, the voting, the countdowns but especially the commentary, opinions and musical recommendations from you all, many thanks guys! Most of all a massive thanks to gasman for all your hard work (and coping with the Oasis proverbial ‘spanner in the works’ midway through). I particularly enjoyed your fantastic personal commentaries on each individual song in the final. Bet you need a rest now, well deserved !😆
  22. Ooh Dreaming has some of the best drumming in a pop song ever! RIP Clem Burke😢
  23. Of the final two, I think one is the song I expected to win and the other is a complete curveball but a very welcome one. Great work guys.
  24. Sound Of Silence is such a beautiful song!
  25. The Chain was the 2nd of the three songs I thought might be the #1 here so surprised it is out already. One of my predictions is left. The top 5 does have some surprising but very welcome songs, it’s getting very interesting! Luckily I like all of them. Very happy at the Beach Boys doing so well, Wouldn’t It Be Nice is a great song but boy its original A side God Only Knows is an absolutely wonderful song, one of my all time favourites. RIP Brian😢 Christmas Wrapping is one of the Christmas songs I can enjoy outside the festive period, maybe because it isn’t played to death every year like some other more obvious ones.
