  2. Ah, ‘when the party’s over’ has always been my favourite Billie single. It was the first of her songs I noticed, and even with all the great stuff she’s done since, it remains the best. I love the understated sparse arrangement, I alluded to the influence of Lorde in the 2013 #1 rankings, and the gorgeous choral vocal layering. Loads of silences which add to the spine tingling effect. Beautiful! I don’t think I’d heard ‘Waiting For The Stars‘ before so another new discovery for me. I’m definitely a sucker for a great dark synth pop banger like that. Love the driving rhythm, and the detached vocals, it reminds me a bit of the more uptempo Depeche Mode moments. I haven’t got involved with RotD this year . Last year I sent loads of obscure songs that I love and none even made it to the top 40 of their year 😆! I suppose my taste isn’t aligned with much of the Buzzjack faithful. Great choice here though!
  3. Not very memorable and I suppose the year end position reflects that. Cheryl definitely had better
  4. Great start to the year! Another winning Prince single, though perhaps not one of my absolute favourites. Love & Pride is fantastic, it’s definitely grown on me over the years. At the time I had think there were accusations of being Duran Duran copyists but this song rose above that. I Know Him So Well is lovely, another that has improved with time. Since Yesterday is a great quirky standout song I also like Solid, a great soul duet
  5. Here’s another estimated ‘rolling’ 12 month 40 best sellers list for the beginning of Q4 2025 to the end of Q3 2026. Thanks again Julian, for your excellent thread! That ‘Man I Need’ total is the highest 12 month total since I started monitoring this (quarterly) 2 years ago, but I suspect it must be one of the highest there’s ever been (especially outside Band Aid/Candle In The Wind)? Olivia Dean ~ Man I Need 2.600m Sam Fender and Olivia Dean ~ Rein Me In 2.062m Raye ~ Where Is My Husband! 1.720m Taylor Swift ~ The Fate Of Ophelia 1.670m Huntr/x ~ Golden 1.645m Alex Warren ~ Ordinary 1.592m Olivia Dean ~ So Easy (To Fall In Love) 1.390m Dave ~ Raindance (feat. 6. The singer/rap combo had became tiresome by now. It’s okay but nothing I’d seek out at all
  7. Oh please don’t worry, I certainly didn’t want to make you feel bad. And thank you for you lovely comment, I wanted to express how the song has such a special meaning for me. 🙏 Also I love Slowdive, so I’ll definitely be checking that EP out. Thanks!
  8. Wow, we’re moving quickly through the decades aren’t we?! That’s a lovely write up of your life in the 2010s. It seems that teens and twenties are most people’s formative years regarding music loves, they certainly are for me, so it was great to hear about yours. A great start to the ten too. I hadn’t heard Ellipsis or anything by Drab Majesty in fact so that’s a new discovery for me, thanks! I think it’s great too, I’m a sucker for a dark synth banger like this, love the driving rhythm vocals and outro. I have to admit I have a difficult relationship with No Tears Left To Cry. I absolutely adore the song, that beautiful intro, the garage style shuffling rhythm Ariana’s fantastically understated vocals but most of all the gorgeous synths. My favourite song by far from her! However, coming from the North West I have some harrowing memories of that fateful day in Manchester and the suffering of the bereaved and the injured following it. I have family and friends who were involved (though thankfully not physically injured) but also in a professional capacity, as part of my job, I dealt with the aftermath for the grieving and both the physically and emotionally affected. The song for me is forever tied to that event in history, but it has such a lovely way of comforting while also looking to the future and pointing the way to ‘carry on’ in life. I cannot imagine how Ariana must have felt with all the responsibility of responding for a community at her young age, but she did it humbly and fantastically and is loved in this part of the world for it. But I’m afraid do find it hard to listen to even now, without getting upset and remembering those difficult times.
  9. Never a fan of All About That Bass, I don’t like the resurrection of that faux doo-wop sound, nor the lyrics (I’m bringing booty back’). I do like Stay With Me though, one of Sam’s best, I’m a sucker for a gospel sound and I think their vocals are great here. Probably my favourite of those songs revealed so far
  10. One last thing I promise: 2013 Number Ones Ranking Compilation After reading all your excellent personal lists and noticing the differences of opinion, I decided I’d collate all of them into the ‘definitive’ ranking. I thought I’d share my results, in case you find it interesting. So, using the time honoured system of maximum points (31 here) for a number one, and so on down each of the 11 lists, I’ve produced this unofficial, unapproved, and definitely unscientific list of the best UK number ones of 2013! Any change from my own list is shown after the new position. Total points are in brackets. Half points given for any shared positions. = Get Lucky - Daft Punk ft Pharrell Williams & Nile Rodgers (293.5) +7 La La La - Naughty Boy ft Sam Smith (279.5) -1 Royals - Lorde (255) = I Love It - Icona Pop ft Charli XCX (246) = Thrift Shop - Macklemore & Ryan Lewis ft Wanz (238) -3 Mirrors - Justin Timberlake (231) +10 Wake Me Up - Avicii (226) -2 Wrecking Ball - Miley Cyrus (213) +13 Counting Stars - OneRepublic (209) +2 Love Me Again - John Newman (192) -1 Look Right Through - Storm Queen (185) +11 I Could Be The One - Avicii & Nicky Romero (174) +1 Need U (100%) - Duke Dumont ft A*M*E (163) -6 Roar - Katy Perry (144) -4 Waiting All Night - Rudimental ft Ella Eyre (141) -9 Somewhere Only We Know - Lily Allen (129) -1 Animals - Michael Garrix (124) = Burn - Ellie Goulding (122) = Happy - Pharrell Williams (121) +4 The Monster - Eminem ft Rihanna (106) = What About Us - The Saturdays ft Sean Paul (94) -2 Under Control - Calvin Harris & Alesso ft Hurts (92) +3 Scream & Shout - will.i.am ft Britney Spears (81) +4 Talk Dirty - Jason Derulo ft 2 Chainz (61) -10 We Can’t Stop - Miley Cyrus (59) -13 Get Up (Rattle) - Bingo Players ft Far East Movement (58) +4 Blurred Lines - Robin Thicke ft T.I. & Pharrell Williams (53) +1 Let’s Get Ready To Rhumble - PJ & Duncan (38) -4 Impossible - James Arthur (36) -3 Skyscraper - Sam Bailey (28) -1 One Way Or Another (Teenage Kicks) - One Direction (20) As I suspected, there’s been some ironing out of some of, let’s say, my more esoteric personal choices. Making for, I think, a better more rounded (fairer) list! Counting Stars, I Could Be The One, and Wake Me Up have risen most compared to my list. Get Up (Rattle), We Can’t Stop, and Somewhere Only We Know have fallen furthest. Get Lucky is number one on the most lists (four) and La La La is the only song on everyone’s list. Thanks again everyone for joining in!
  11. Money On My Mind is generally inoffensive but just very bland. I don’t like Sam’s vocal acrobatics here much and, like you, much prefer their early collaborations and dance oriented stuff I do actually really love reggae… usually, but Rude’s ‘white boy’ cod reggae pastiche is awful. Very few artists have pulled that one off (I’m thinking maybe early Police). It just seems so contrived and calculated, aiming for the mass (US?) audience. And the song’s vibe is a bit too close to Maroon 5isms for my liking. Hate the lyrics too, asking fathers permission to marry his daughter. What, are we in the 19th Century? Not MAGIC! At all!
  12. Adele - Can I Get It Sophie Ellis-Bextor - New York City Lights MARINA - Teen Idle Kate Bush - Reaching Out Dido - Mary’s in India Jessie Ware - The Kill Agnes - Loaded Leona Lewis - Outta My Head Zara Larsson - Blue Moon Robyn - Time Machine
  13. New Order - Love Vigilantes M83 - Lower Your Eyelids to Die With the Sun Years & Years - Ties Ultravox - Accent on Youth iamamiwhoami- shadowshow Sade - Pearls Fontaines D.C. - Sundowner Depeche Mode - Photographic Bananarama - Bad For Me Texas - Like Lovers (Holding On)
  14. Gary Numan - M.E. Damien Rice - Amie Roosevelt - Forget HRVY - Never Be Us Sam Fender - The Treadmill Lewis Capaldi - Heavenly Kind of State of Mind Tom Grennan - If Only Sam Smith - Lose You Darin - Om du var min Calvin Harris feat. Tinashe - Dollar Signs
  15. Ah there it is! Boy this is bad, it’s like even the people involved weren’t interested in doing it either. We’d already had enough versions to last a lifetime, so is there anyone who chooses this one to listen to at Christmas?
  16. Gorillaz are a great shout. I’m a massive fan of Blur and particularly Damon Albarn, his many other projects have always seemed to bring something new and vibrant, continually reinventing himself. Gorillaz are no exception. De La Soul are one of my favourites rap acts, so of course I love the vibes of Feel Good Inc. Demon Days is their best album (see below for my favourite from it) though The Mountain now comes close. I love your write up about Another Chance. Yes it’s a great song but mostly I like your personal attachment to it. I always feel those are the types of songs that have the greatest impact. The house styling is fantastic though, along with great vocals, and underneath it all it’s an excellent dance record too. That’s another very enjoyable top 10, thank you! My favourites of the decade would go something like this: Stan (feat. Dido) – Eminem Supermassive Black Hole – Muse Ready for the Floor – Hot Chip Digital Love – Daft Punk Take Me Out – Franz Ferdinand Fight Test – The Flaming Lips In My Place – Coldplay Dry Your Eyes – The Streets America – Razorlight DARE (feat. Shaun Ryder & Roses Gabor) – Gorillaz Your Love Alone Is Not Enough – Manic Street Preachers & Nina Persson Crazy – Gnarls Barkley Hey Ya! – Outkast Empire State Of Mind (feat Alicia Keys) – JAY-Z Time to Pretend – MGMT Paper Planes – M.I.A. Out of Time – Blur Caught Out There – Kelis There Goes the Fear – Doves No One Knows – Queens of the Stone Age Cornerstone – Arctic Monkeys One Day Like This – Elbow Sing – Travis Hard To Explain – The Strokes Hotel Yorba – The White Stripes Freak Like Me – Sugababes All My Life – Foo Fighters This Is the Last Time – Keane In da Club – 50 Cent American Idiot – Green Day Two More Years – Bloc Party Welcome to the Black Parade – My Chemical Romance I Don't Feel Like Dancin' – Scissor Sisters Rehab – Amy Winehouse Hometown Glory – Adele Foundations – Kate Nash Dog Days Are Over – Florence + the Machine Dance Wiv Me (feat. Calvin Harris – Dizzee Rascal Bulletproof – La Roux The Fear – Lily Allen
  17. Some lovely laid back 70s hits America is great with (obviously gorgeous vocals) as is Goodbye To Love In A Broken Dream and Donna are gems I wasn’t too familiar with before. Hallelujah Freedom is excellent, I love the gospel vibe too. Guitar Man is great and typically laid back Burning Love is an Elvis 70s highlight
  18. I agree Bad Romance is my favourite Gaga single. Driving rhythm, darker subject matter and excellent vocals, it did seem a step up from the original Fame singles. I love Pure Shores, gorgeous production and vocals, light and melodic. However my All Saints favourite is the absolutely beautiful Black Coffee, probably my fav girl group single of the century, along with Freak Like Me.
  19. Oh, I spoke too soon! That’s the worst so far. Aside from the charity, it has absolutely no redeeming qualities. Of course The Choir thing had to be extended to a ‘celebrities’ version!🙄 I’ll say it again……I hope there’s not worse still to come! Edit - Heck, I just noticed Tilt says there is a worse song to come!
  20. An Honest Mistake is great, that driving propulsive rhythm and synths definitely take me back to that particular era. Bloc Party are another band that I love from then. I agree about the new wave influence, it could almost be a Blondie song from the early 80s. Toxic is a classic of course, it may be my favourite Britney song. Sounded way ahead of its time. The strings are fantastic too!
  21. Wow, I genuinely think there’s a number one I’ve never heard before, unless my brain has just blanked it out. Really boring and generic, with awful lazy lyrics and rhymes (if you can call will’s bits that). Didn’t think I’d be saying this after Haenow but this could easily content for last, I hope there’s not worse still to come.
  22. King - Love And Pride The Art Of Noise - Close (To The Edit) Kirsty MacColl - A New England The Smiths - How Soon Is Now? Dead Or Alive - You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)
  23. No I wasn’t around at the time sadly😔, at least not as a member (I was probably lurking somewhere😆!) Love those other recommendations too! I find it a bit sad that I can’t imagine a song like that, with that ambition, could reach the top 40, never mind number one these days. But it will change again I’m sure, because it always has. I see green shoots forming already……
  24. Excellent, thanks Julian, I agree ‘Team’ is great too!
  25. Two great number ones. Loneliness is one the best of the early 2000s dance singles. Quite sparse with, sort of, detached vocals and that techno vibe. …Black Parade is epic, definitely my favourite MCR single. Multifaceted, emo but with prog rock elements, it could almost be from a Broadway show.
