  1. Yet more X Factor nonsense, can’t argue with it being last. Forgotten it again already
  2. This is an excellent start to the 2000s. I don’t remember hearing Moi... Lolita before but it sounds great. I absolutely love how French lyrics sound in songs and this is no different. That middle 8 is lovely you’re right, as are the strings. Hoppípolla is gorgeous of course, I love that Sigur Rós sound like nobody else. Epic of course with those brilliant strings, but the lyrics and vocals feel like an instrument all of their own, adding to the whole beautiful soundscape. Looking forward to the rest of the ten.
  3. Thanks Jester, really looking forward to yours too
  4. Thanks so much @Iz様 🌟 and @Chez Wombat for following along, those lovely comments and for your personal rankings, love to see them!
  5. Likewise The Clash are one of my all time favourite bands with such a consistently high standard across their whole career. Like you, I lean a bit towards their early career as my favourite songs and albums. If I had to choose now then maybe I Fought The Law, Tommy Gun or White Riot might be tops. However that’s not to say I don’t absolutely love Should I Stay…. as you say it’s one of their best stadium rock songs. At the time it felt a bit odd seeing its resurgence in ‘91, but I was very happy they finally had a number one, even if it was off the back of another jeans advert! Absolutely not a difficult sell for me Jim….The Fly would also be my #1 of this 1991 ranking! In fact I was actually surprised that you chose it too, kept waiting for you to announce it earlier, but here we are, like minds and all that! It was a blast of energy anyway, but especially after that 16 weeks of Bryan Adams at number one it felt some kind of chart saviour to me! Powerful and melodic at the same time, the guitars are especially fantastic. One of U2s 5 best singles anyway but absolutely their best number one, from by far their best album Achtung Baby. Still topped by the magnificent Mysterious Ways for me though! Loved your ranking as always Jim, excellent commentary, and may I say great taste too😆! Thanks so much! Here’s my ranking: The Fly – U2 3 a.m. Eternal – The KLF feat. The Children of the Revolution Should I Stay or Should I Go – The Clash Black or White – Michael Jackson Sadeness (Part I) – Enigma These Are the Days of Our Lives – Queen Dizzy – Vic Reeves & The Wonder Stuff The One and Only – Chesney Hawkes (Everything I Do) I Do It for You – Bryan Adams Innuendo – Queen Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me – George Michael & Elton John Bring Your Daughter... to the Slaughter – Iron Maiden I Wanna Sex You Up – Color Me Badd The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss) – Cher Any Dream Will Do – Jason Donovan Do the Bartman – The Simpsons The Stonk – Hale & Pace & The Stonkers
  6. Thank you for your comments and kind words @Popchartfreak @Jade @Jessie Where @Paddington James @Roba. @jimwatts @gooddelta @Jester and @Riser! Thanks for the rankings too, if anyone else has one to offer I’d love to read it!
  7. Holy moly!!!! Awesome noise rock from the Irish post punk legends! New album out today.
  8. Thanks for following along @DaTilt. It was lovely seeing your list gradually evolving through the thread!
  9. Some more goodies here. You can’t really go wrong with T Rex in that imperial phase, Children Of The Revolution is great if not my favourite by them, it would also top my list of this group. Similarly John I’m Only Dancing is not one of my top Bowie songs ….but still Bowie so excellent of course Mouldy Old Dough is such a unique engaging song. Instrumental with the whistle/flute thing, Winnie Atwell like piano, and growling vocals, love it! Honky Cat is fun. I love a bit of 70s reggae so Suzanne… floats my boat! Wig-Wam Bam was a huge favourite at school, great memories. How Can I Be Sure is lovely, probably the best of all the Cassidy singles.
  10. I love Drummond and Cauty, the KLF, and all their other various iterations, with their ‘all killer no filler’ singles. Especially the 1991 run, they really should have had more number ones. Also the book, ‘The Manual (How to Have a Number One the Easy Way)’ was great for a chart nerd like me. 3am Eternal is excellent, maybe just edged for me by What Time Is Love? in its various forms, though I have a soft spot for It’s Grim Up North coming from that part of the world! Two songs left, my numbers 3 and 1 from 1991!
  11. So that’s the full countdown, thanks for the chance to do this Julian, it was a bit of a journey and a whole lot of fun. And thanks everyone for all your comments, contributions and support, it’s much appreciated! Finally, the last quiz answer - Velvet Underground. I’m not sure if anyone was following along with the quiz, but I’d already done the work so decided to continue with it! Hope someone enjoyed it! If so, how many did you get right? Anyway it’s time to pass the baton on to Jester for a 2014 number one ranking. I’m confident it will be fantastic! But I’d love to see all your rankings too, if you feel inclined!

  13. 1 Get Lucky - Daft Punk Feat. Pharrell Williams & Nile Rodgers. Number one for 4 weeks Year end number 2 Number 2 watch - So Good To Me - Chris Malinchak Let Her Go - Passenger Get Lucky was the lead single from Daft Punk’s fourth and final studio album, Random Access Memories. It was Daft Punks first and only UK number one but Pharrell’s first of four, and I’ve just realised he has bookended my countdown (and appeared in the middle too), that’s quite an achievement, to have both the best and worst number one of the year! The collaboration between them all apparently came about after many years of friendship and previous remix and production work together. Daft Punk were obviously already a groundbreaking electronic band especially on their early albums, but on their final album Random Access Memories they moved towards warmer analog instrumentation and ‘live’ music. I love both, though I know not everyone does. I’ve always been a huge fan and it was great to see them get such success at the end of their careers. Looking backwards to their own influences, to go forwards. What a swansong! The lyrics according to Williams, are about connecting with someone, as well as sexual chemistry. It’s full also of great positive sentiments like ‘We’ve come too far to give up who we are’. The music really sounds like a jam session revolving around Rodgers’ fantastic immediately recognisable funky rhythmic guitar. Weaved around this are 70s disco pop with house music influences all adding to the sense of euphoria. It feels futuristic but also nostalgic at the same time. Everything is in its right place, a fantastic summery hit. Daft Punk’s brilliant futuristic funk, Pharrell’s great falsetto with Michael Jackson like vocal ad libs and of course Rodger’s signature guitar style holding the whole thing together. There was even a trend on YouTube for looping that wonderful melody on and on forever, the longer the better as far as I’m concerned! The gorgeous lifting pre chorus is also one of my particularly favourite parts. Then you’ve got the typically excellent Daft Punk vocoder-laden outro. Overall I love that, although it’s uptempo, dancy and full of optimistic hedonistic lyrics it somehow, to me, all still sounds a bit melancholic? A great way to finish the countdown, the best song of the decade! 10 Quiz - Answer - “Songs for Swingin' Lovers" by Frank Sinatra. Lou Reed passed away in October 2013, with which seminal band of the 1960s was he a founder member?
  14. 2 Royals - Lorde. Number one for 1 week Year end number 44 (98 in 2014) Number 2 watch - You’re Nobody ‘Til Somebody Loves You - James Arthur My top two are both brilliant and worthy of 10s. Royals was the debut single by New Zealand singer songwriter Lorde (real name Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor) and was initially included on her debut EP The Love Club and then also her debut album Pure Heroine. It was her first, and so far criminally, her only UK number one. At 16 Lorde became the youngest solo artist to score a UK number one single since 15 year old Billie Piper in 1998. In short it’s a brilliant and groundbreaking song, both lyrically and musically. The lyrics critique the extravagant lifestyle (cars, jewellery, clothes etc) presented in songs and music videos by popular musicians, making them appear like modern day royalty. It is also a class and social commentary on how this pretty much unobtainable life doesn’t reflect most young people’s reality, growing up in drab circumstances, amid a popular culture that flaunts luxury brands and celebrates consumerism. For the music Lorde said she took her inspiration from both indie pop (like Lana Del Ray) and hip hop (such as Jay-Z and Kanye West), with a minimalistic wonderfully stark sound. I particularly love the percussion, the hip hop beats, the rhythmical finger clicks, the bass and most of all the fantastic s p a c e in the song, Lorde not being frightened to leave silence throughout. The vocals are also great, especially the fantastic layers of harmonies in the chorus. Aside from being a such brilliant song it became one of the most influential of the decade with many artists, such as the equally fantastic Billie Eilish, going on to adopt its minimalist style. It completely rewrote the rules for young women making radio-friendly pop, but perhaps the ultimate accolade (especially for Lorde herself, who was a huge fan) was the late great David Bowie describing her as the future of music. Amazingly (or maybe obviously?) it was just the beginning, Lorde would next go on to make the best pop album of the century so far.…. 10 Quiz - Answer - Harlem Shake - Baauer Robbie Williams' album "Swings Both Ways" became the 1000th to reach the UK number one spot in November 2013. What was the first album to top the UK charts back in 1956?
  15. Me trying to resist giving 10s to all of that imperial phase!

  20. Both fantastic artists in your top 2! Amazing to think how long Madonna was at the top commercially and critically. I love Frozen too especially that William Orbit production, absolutely gorgeous, and a worthy winner of Buzzjack’s Favourite Song! I’m with Rollo saying Like A Prayer is just about my absolute favourite Madonna single. Depeche Mode are another wonderfully consistently great band over so long, managing to reinvent themselves repeatedly. Enjoy The Silence is one of my favourites too, dark and brooding but also very beautiful. But, OMG I forgot/blocked out about the Susan Boyle version, thanks so much for the reminder!!! Your list of honourable mentions is great too, some fantastic songs there! This was my list of 40 that I made back in 1999, I think it mostly still holds up well. 1 Motorcycle Emptiness – Manic Street Preachers 2 Some Might Say – Oasis 3 Common People – Pulp 4 Firestarter – The Prodigy 5 Smells Like Teen Spirit – Nirvana 6 High and Dry – Radiohead 7 Tender – Blur 8 Yes – McAlmont & Butler 9 Killing Me Softly With His Song – Fugees 10 This Is How It Feels – Inspiral Carpets 11 Bitter Sweet Symphony – The Verve 12 Ice Hockey Hair – Super Furry Animals 13 Groove Is In the Heart – Deee-Lite 14 Come Together – Primal Scream 15 Killer – Adamski 16 The Drowners – Suede 17 People Everyday – Arrested Development 18 Cherub Rock – The Smashing Pumpkins 19 Nightswimming – R.E.M. 20 Killing In The Name – Rage Against the Machine 21 Nothing Can Stop Us – Saint Etienne 22 Play Dead – Björk & David Arnold 23 World In Motion – New Order 24 Sometimes – James 25 Glory Box – Portishead 26 Connection – Elastica 27 Hallelujah – Jeff Buckley 28 Goddess on a Hiway – Mercury Rev 29 Protection – Massive Attack 30 Caught By the Fuzz – Supergrass 31 Gangsta's Paradise (feat. 21. Number 2 watch Please bear with me for a final further detour (indulgence), before the last 2 songs: Although I’ve been very lucky that I like most of 2013s number ones, there’s a few of the number twos of that year that, let’s just say I’m less keen on. However there were still some brilliant ones, and these are my favourite 5:- So Good To Me - Chris Malinchak Just Give Me A Reason - Pink/Nate Ruess Pompeii - Bastille White Noise - Disclosure/Alunageorge I Knew You Were Trouble - Taylor Swift In fact, surprisingly, I worked out that Just Give Me A Reason was the only song that spent more than 1 week at number two that year, that must be quite rare?! Also I have to give a special mention to Ding-Dong The Witch Is Dead, for its sentiments and its song length! I do have a massive soft spot for that wonderful Chris Malinchak song though, it’s absolutely gorgeous, a real summer banger! Would certainly be at least top five here, if it had got to #1, possibly even higher. Brilliant beautiful video too! Any personal favourites?
  22. Sorry, I put the right one in Apple but not Spotify! Corrected now.
  23. My favourites are all being voted out!😢
  24. That’s great, thank you! Wow, the number of them in 2012 is ridiculous!
  25. I’ve got playlist happy today so I thought I’d share! There’s an Apple Music and Spotify one if they’re helpful? Apologies if someone has already done one or is planning one!
