57. Blink Twice - £3.3 million Are you having a good time? When tech billionaire Slater King meets cocktail waitress Frida at his fundraising gala, he invites her to join him and his friends on a dream vacation on his private island. But despite the epic setting, beautiful people, ever-flowing champagne, and late-night dance parties, Frida can sense that there’s something sinister hiding beneath the island’s lush façade. Director: Zoë Kravitz Cast: Naomi Ackie, Channing Tatum, Christian Slater Release Date: 23rd August 2024 Distributor: Warner Bros. Certification: 15 Genre: Thriller Rotten Tomatoes: 75% IMDb: 6.5 Top 15 Chart Run: 6-7-7-12 (4 weeks) Opening Weekend: £746,328 (#6) Zoë Kravitz made her directing debut with this thriller starring Channing Tatum in an against-type villainous role as a tech-billionaire hosting a party on his private island after going through a scandal. This was an Amazon film in the US and with it making back over double it's budget, it's a rare success for them a streamer in the theatrical market. When this was announced, the original title was 'Pussy Island' which they ended up changing. Cowards!

58. Priscilla - £3.2 million Wife to the King. Icon to the world. Destined for more. When teenage Priscilla Beaulieu meets Elvis Presley, the man who is already a meteoric rock-and-roll superstar becomes someone entirely unexpected in private moments: a thrilling crush, an ally in loneliness, a vulnerable best friend. Director: Sofia Coppola Cast: Cailee Spaeny, Jacob Elordi, Ari Cohen Release Date: 1st January 2024 Distributor: MUBI Certification: 15 Genre: Drama Rotten Tomatoes: 84% IMDb: 6.5 Top 15 Chart Run: 3-6-11 (3 weeks) Opening Weekend: £1,326,326 (#3) Released on 1st January, we're going right back to the start of the year with 'Priscilla'. We obviously got the big-budget Elvis Presley biopic in 2022 where Priscilla got a bit short shrift so I'm happy that we got something from her perspective and Sofia Coppola seems like the perfect fit to direct it. I haven't seen this one yet but Cailee Spaeny is killing it recently so I will get round to it at some point. This is actually the first of three starring roles for Spaeny in this list so she might just be the under-the-radar star of the year!

59. Harold And The Purple Crayon - £3.1 million Everything he draws is about to get real. Inside of his book, adventurous Harold can make anything come to life simply by drawing it. After he grows up and draws himself off the book’s pages and into the physical world, Harold finds he has a lot to learn about real life. Director: Carlos Saldanha Cast: Zachary Levi, Lil Rel Howery, Zooey Deschanel Release Date: 2nd August 2024 Distributor: Sony Certification: PG Genre: Kids Rotten Tomatoes: 27% IMDb: 5.7 Top 15 Chart Run: 5-8-12-13-11-15 (6 weeks) Opening Weekend: £641,549 (#5) Based on a beloved children's book in America, I don't think it really made it over here because I had never heard of the book before this film was released. After the second 'Shazam!' film flopped, Zachary Levi made one last attempt at making people love his 'quirky man-child' acting-schtick before giving up and going full Trumpite on Twitter after this flopped too making $32 million worldwide on a $40 million budget.

61. The Iron Claw - £2.6 million Sons. Brothers. Champions. The true story of the inseparable Von Erich brothers, who made history in the intensely competitive world of professional wrestling in the early 1980s. Through tragedy and triumph, under the shadow of their domineering father and coach, the brothers seek larger-than-life immortality on the biggest stage in sports. Director: Sean Durkin Cast: Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson Release Date: 9th February 2024 Distributor: Lionsgate Certification: 15 Genre: Drama Rotten Tomatoes: 89% IMDb: 7.6 Top 15 Chart Run: 3-6-9-12 (4 weeks) Opening Weekend: £754,152 (#3) Zac Efron earned the best reviews of his career playing real life-wrestler Kevin Von Erich, who's whole family were professionals in the sport and suffered countless tragedies. The A24 produced film was deemed by many to be the biggest snub at last year's Oscars with Efron, in particular, being called out as someone who deserved a nomination. For a film with a $16 million budget, this ended up doing well, making $45 million+ worldwide.

62. Monkey Man - £2.5 million One small ember can burn down everything. Kid is an anonymous young man who ekes out a meager living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash. After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him. Director: Dev Patel Cast: Dev Patel, Sharlto Copley, Pitobash Release Date: 5th April 2024 Distributor: Universal Certification: 18 Genre: Action Rotten Tomatoes: 89% IMDb: 6.9 Top 15 Chart Run: 5-7-8-10 (4 weeks) Opening Weekend: £810,253 (#5) Dev Patal makes his directorial debut in this (co)self-penned and self-starring in this India-set action thriller with hard-hitting set pieces and biting political commentary. Originally funded by Netflix, fearing a negative reaction to the politics by an Indian audience, they got cold feet and nearly cancelled the project. However, Jordan Peele stepped in and convinced Universal to but it off Netflix for $10 million. Patel might be a director to watch out for as this was adored by critics with the hyper-violent John Wick-esque action scenes being deemed some of the best in a long while.

63. The Outrun - £2.3 million Fresh out of rehab, Rona returns to the Orkney Islands—a place both wild and beautiful, right off the Scottish coast. Now 29 and after more than a decade of living life on the edge in London, where she both found and lost love, Rona attempts to come to terms with her troubled past. As she reconnects with the dramatic landscape where she grew up, memories of her traumatic childhood merge with more recent challenging events that have set her on the path to recovery. Director: Nora Fingscheidt Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Paapa Essiedu, Nabil Elouahabi Release Date: 27th September 2024 Distributor: StudioCanal Certification: 15 Genre: Drama Rotten Tomatoes: 82% IMDb: 6.9 Top 15 Chart Run: 3-5-10-12 (4 weeks) Opening Weekend: £449,591 (#3) The second Saoirse Ronan film of the year, 'The Outrun' is adapted from Amy Liptrot's 2016 memoir and sees Ronan star as a recovering alcoholic who heads to her childhood home to try to get better. Filmed on location in the Orkney Islands I've heard that this film has some brilliant visuals but a meandering plot. It's a performance piece for Ronan who earned a lot of praise for her moving performance.

64. The Apprentice - £2.2 million An American horror story. A young Donald Trump, eager to make his name as a hungry scion of a wealthy family in 1970s New York, comes under the spell of Roy Cohn, the cutthroat attorney who would help create the Donald Trump we know today. Cohn sees in Trump the perfect protégé—someone with raw ambition, a hunger for success, and a willingness to do whatever it takes to win. Director: Ali Abbasi Cast: Sebastian Stan, Jeremy Strong, Maria Bakalova Release Date: 18th October 2024 Distributor: StudioCanal Certification: 15 Genre: Drama Rotten Tomatoes: 83% IMDb: 7.1 Top 15 Chart Run: 3-5-14 (3 weeks) Opening Weekend: £749,149 (#3) Cruella, Joker, Maleficent, it feels like every villain gets their own origin story nowadays with the latest being the current US President, Donald J. Trump. Sebastian Stan takes on the role in the controversial film which was released during campaigning at last year's US elections. I've heard that Jeremy Strong steals the show with his ruthless portrayal of Roy Cohn. Seeming on the events of the most controversial scene in the film, it's ironic that director Ali Abbasi is currently going through a groping-scandal of his own.

60. Anora - £2.9 million Love is a hustle. Anora, a young sex worker from Brooklyn, gets her chance at a Cinderella story when she meets and impulsively marries the son of an oligarch. Once the news reaches Russia, her fairytale is threatened as the parents set out for New York to get the marriage annulled. Director: Sean Baker Cast: Mikey Maddison, Mark Eydelshteyn, Yura Borisov Release Date: 1st November 2024 Distributor: Universal Certification: 18 Genre: Comedy Rotten Tomatoes: 93% IMDb: 7.7 Top 15 Chart Run: 6-9-12-12-11 (5 weeks) Opening Weekend: £509,505 (#6) Depending on how tomorrow goes, I might be going to soon by posting this. 'Anora' won last year's Palme d'Or and is one of the three films that seem to be battling it out to become Best Picture at Sunday's Academy Awards. After earning her stripes with appearances in 'Once Upon A Time In Hollywood' and 'Scream', Mikey Maddison makes her leading breakthrough in a role which might just bag her an Oscar. If you haven't checked out Sean Baker's previous film, 'Red Rocket', I really recommend giving it a watch. I will update this list if this does do enough to climb a couple of positions in the coming weeks. EDIT: It did win the Oscar and has climbed up to #60. I'll keep it in this post but update the positions

65. Kneecap - £2.2 million Mind your Language. When fate brings Belfast teacher JJ into the orbit of self-confessed ‘low life scum’ Naoise and Liam Og, the needle drops on a hip hop act like no other. Rapping in their native Irish, they lead a movement to save their mother tongue. Director: Rich Peppiatt Cast: Móglaí Bap, Mo Chara, DJ Próvai Release Date: 23rd August 2024 Distributor: Curzon Certification: 18 Genre: Comedy Rotten Tomatoes: 96% IMDb: 7.6 Top 15 Chart Run: 5-13-11-15 (4 weeks) Opening Weekend: £1,035,664 (#5) A musician-biopic like no other, 'Kneecap' makes the interesting decision to let the members of the band play themselves and it works a treat. That £1 million+ opening is very misleading as it opened in Ireland two weeks before the UK and that gross was was all included as previews in a very inflated opening weekend. I thought that Jessica Reynolds and Michael Fassbender both shone in supporting roles. Ireland had hopes for this to pick up a nomination at the Oscars but it wasn't to be.

66. Nye: NT Live 2024 - £2.1 million One man's dream of the NHS Confronted with death, National Health Service founder Aneurin ‘Nye’ Bevan’s deepest memories lead him on a mind-bending journey back through his life; from childhood to mining underground, Parliament and fights with Winston Churchill. Director: Rufus Norris Cast: Michael Sheen, Sharon Small, Remy Beasley Release Date: 23rd April 2024 Distributor: National Theatre Certification: 15 Genre: Theatre Rotten Tomatoes: n/a IMDb: 8.1 Top 15 Chart Run: 7 (1 week) Opening Weekend: £36,588 (#22) We don't have to wait long for the next and final Theatre recording as 'Nye' lands just two places higher than 'Vanya'. This one sees Michael Sheen take on the role of Nye Bevan, founder of the NHS, looking back at his life on his deathbed. This compares very favourably to 2023 where the highest placed theatre recording was 'A Little Life' at #92 in the EOY charts (£1.4 million). 2025 looks set to be even better as we already have a release that has out-grossed this!

67. Imaginary - £2 million Meet Chauncey. He’s not imaginary. And he’s not your friend. When Jessica moves back into her childhood home with her family, her youngest stepdaughter Alice develops an eerie attachment to a stuffed bear named Chauncey she finds in the basement. Alice starts playing games with Chauncey that begin playful and become increasingly sinister. As Alice’s behaviour becomes more and more concerning, Jessica intervenes only to realize Chauncey is much more than the stuffed toy bear she believed him to be. Director: Jeff Wadlow Cast: DeWanda Wise, Tom Payne, Taegen Burns Release Date: 8th March 2024 Distributor: Lionsgate Certification: 15 Genre: Horror Rotten Tomatoes: 24% IMDb: 4.7 Top 15 Chart Run: 5-5-9 (3 weeks) Opening Weekend: £652,808 (#5) The first half of 2024 was filled by dud horror releases with the only premise weaker than Night Swim's haunted swimming pool was probably Imaginary's killer imaginary friend who, for some reason, they decided on being a (very unscary) teddy bear. Universal has a first-option deal with Blumhouse but decided to pass on this one and I can see why.

68. Vanya: NT Live 2024 - £2 million Andrew Scott brings multiple characters to life in Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya, filmed live in West End, London. Hopes, dreams, and regrets are thrust into sharp focus in this one-man adaptation which explores the complexities of human emotions. Director: Sam Yates Cast: Andrew Scott Release Date: 22nd February 2024 Distributor: National Theatre Certification: 15 Genre: Theatre Rotten Tomatoes: n/a IMDb: 8.6 Top 15 Chart Run: 6 (1 week) Opening Weekend: £327,444 (#6) Andrew Scott had a great year in 2024 with 'All Of Us Strangers' being a big hit and is still to come in this list while the recording his one-man play 'Vanya' comfortably makes the top 75. An adaptation of Anton Chekov's 1897 play 'Uncle Vanya', it has a competing Broadway adaptation running at the same time with Steve Carrell in the main role. This one is heading to New York itself next month and should be worth checking out with Scott earning himself an Olivier award nomination. In fact, all three of the theatre releases so far earned 'Best Actor' nods with Gatiss winning for 'The Motive and the Cue'.

69. The Strangers: Chapter 1 - £1.8 million They don't need a reason After their car breaks down in an eerie small town, a young couple are forced to spend the night in a remote cabin. Panic ensues as they are terrorized by three masked strangers who strike with no mercy and seemingly no motives. Director: Renny Harlin Cast: Madelaine Petsch, Froy Gutierrez, Gabriel Basso Release Date: 17th May 2024 Distributor: Lionsgate Certification: 15 Genre: Horror Rotten Tomatoes: 21% IMDb: 4.6 Top 15 Chart Run: 4-6-9-10 (4 weeks) Opening Weekend: £452,507 (#4) Probably best known for directing 'Die Hard 2' and 'Deep Blue Sea', Renny Harlin made his return to the director's chair filming a whole new trilogy of 'The Stranger' films back-o-back, starting with this (pointless) remake of 2008 home-invasion classic. The original is still a beloved film and I don't think anyone was clamouring for it to be remade 15 years later. This was shown by the poor box office returns and 'Chapter 2', which was supposed to be released in late 2024 has been delayed indefinitely. The ex-Riverdale cast are still waiting for a breakthrough, I imagine 'Hustlers' is still the biggest release for any of the main cast.

70. Peppa's Cinema Party - £1.7 million In celebration of British children’s series Peppa Pig‘s 20th anniversary, the event offers ten exclusive never-before-seen season 10 episodes, including a three-part Wedding Party Special. A party bus bonus episode will also be included together with new interactive entertainment featuring Peppa and her friends breaking into the real world through a mixture of animation and live-action with five brand-new songs to sing along to. Director: Andrea Tran & Gretchen Mallorie Cast: Amelie Bea Smith, Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom Release Date: 9th February 2024 Distributor: Trafalgar Certification: U Genre: Children Rotten Tomatoes: n/a IMDb: 5.0 Top 15 Chart Run: 5-8-15 (3 weeks) Opening Weekend: £490,693 (#5) Peppa Pig celebrated her 20th anniversary with this big-screen release that included 10 new episodes, a 3-part wedding special, live action scenes where she enters the real world, singalongs and Katy Perry. This is the fourth time, Peppa has released in cinemas with the previous most recent being Peppa: Pig: Festival Of Fun in 2019. That one grossed about £2.9 million so a hefty drop for this one.

Weekly UK Box Office
21st February 2025 - 23rd February 2025 1. (01) Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy - £6,893,703 (-44%) Weeks: 2 (£27,341,739) 2. (02) Captain America: Brave New World - £2,927,599 (-54%) Weeks: 2 (£13,212,979) 3. (03) Dog Man - £2,033,137 (+10%) Weeks: 3 (£10,995,088) 4. (NE) The Monkey - £1,070,404 Weeks: 1 (£1,070,404) 5. (05) Mufasa: The Lion King - £586,278 (+29%) Weeks: 10 (£32,427,915) 6. (NE) I’m Still Here - £486,391 Weeks: 1 (£486,391) 7. (07) Sonic The Hedgehog 3 - £364,714 (+54%) Weeks: 9 (£26,002,710) 8. (NE) The Importance Of Being Earnest: NT Live 2025 - £341,208 Weeks: 1 (£1,048,377) 9. (06) A Complete Unknown - £226,392 (-36%) Weeks: 6 (£11,461,287) 10. (08) Chhaava - £205,427 (-11%) Weeks: 2 (£604,013) Falling out: Heart Eyes (1 week) The Brutalist (4 weeks) September 5 (2 weeks) The UK still has Bridget-fever as ‘Mad About The Boy’ bags an easy second week at #1 in an unchanged top 3, dropping just 44% on week 2. Take in consideration that last Friday was Valentine’s Day and the film also had record-breaking previews from Thursday, this result looks insane. The drop without previews was a measly 33%. It’s already within the top 200 films of all-time in the country and is our-pacing where the three other Bridget Jones films were at the same stage. The highest-grossing so far, 2016’s ‘Bridget Jones’s Baby’ was on £21,219,529 at this stage so this is definitely on track to get above £50 million. ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ remains at #2 with a harsher 54% drop. However, it has already passed the final total for ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ (£10.3 million) and is tracking ahead of where ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ was at this stage (£10,933,395) so it will still be expecting to beat that film’s £20 million total. The biggest new release this week is ‘The Monkey’ (£1,070,404, #4). Osgood Perkins’s follow-up to last year’s surprise word-of-mouth hit ‘Longlegs’ (£1,371,352, #3). That film legged out to a brilliant £8.1 million which I can’t see this one matching but with a general good reception, we’ll see how it can do. This is a much more comedic effort and was adapted from a short story by Stephen King. This fare’s much more favourably that last year’s King’s adaptation ‘Salem’s Lot’ which didn’t even reach a total of £1 million, debuting at #6 with £359,911 last October. This is actually the best result for a King-related film of the decade so far with the last films to open higher being the double-bill of ‘It: Chapter Two’ (£7,368,586, #1) and ‘Doctor Sleep’ (£1,460,643, #4) in 2019. Opening at #6 is Oscar-nominated ‘I’m Still Here’ with £486,391. Without previews, this would be reduced to £253,598 and would have landed at #8. This is Brazil’s entry for ‘Best International Picture’ and has earned the biggest debut for a film from Latin America in the UJK. This was a record that had been held for over 20 years as the previous holder was 2004’s ‘The Motorcycle Diaries’ (£333,368, #8) coming from the same director, Walter Salles. It is looking like Demi Moore’s to lose, but Fernanda Torres remains in the hunt for this year’s ‘Best Actress’. This is the best result for a non-English language film so far this year. The only other new entry is the latest National Theatre recording. This time it’s of ‘The Importance Of Being Ernest’ and stars Sharon D Clarke and the current Doctor Who, Ncuti Gatwa. Opening with £341,209 over the weekend, it actually opened on Thursday with £700k which puts the release past £1 million already. Had the Thursday gross counted, this would have been enough for it to reach the top 5. This past week was half-term across England and so all of the kids films saw big boosts this week thanks to the stronger Friday compared to weeks where kids are in school. This helped ‘Dog Man’ increase business in week 3 (+9%) to almost reach £11 million. This means that is has already passed the total of last year’s ‘The Garfield Movie’ (£8.9 million) which also came from Universal. It has also breezed past the total of ‘Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie’ so don’t be surprised if we see much more from this franchise to come. ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ holds in the top 5 for a 10th week increasing 29% in business. It’s not overtaken ‘Wallace & Gromit: The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit” as it works it’s way up the list of the biggest kids films. But the real winner from half-term is ‘Sonic The Hedgehog 3’ which sees a crazy 53% increase. It’s now only about £1.3 million from reaching ‘Sonic The Hedgehog 2’ and with how much Paramount seem keen to continue pushing it, I think it will now probably just about overtake it. The school holidays even saw ‘Moana 2’ almost re-enter the top 10 as it ended up only about £7k short. The final two films holding in the top 10 are ‘A Complete Unknown’ (#9) and ‘Chhaava’ (#10). Any success at next week’s Oscar ceremony should see ‘A Complete Unknown’ pick up again but the bigger story is the stupendous hold for ‘Chhaava’ (-11%). This is pretty much unheard of for an Indian film where we’re more accustomed to seeing drops about 70%. Another gold hold and we could see this film reach £1 million. A feat that only 2 Indian films managed last year. There are no further new entries in the #11-15 section. Although if you we’re wondering where ‘Heart Eyes’ is, it fell from #4 to #13 with a 79% drop (76% without previews) in business. Ouch. Next week sees the openings of 'The Last Showgirl, ‘Attack On Titan: The Movie: The Last Attack’, ‘Vicious, 'Last Breath, ‘Superboys Of Malegaeon’, ‘Papa’, ‘The Summer With Carmen’, ‘Swan Lake – ROH, London 2025’, ‘IVE: The 1st World Tour In Cinema’ and ‘Babymetal: Legend 43: The Movie’. We also see a re-release of ‘The Big Lebowski’. Can any of them top the charts?

71. Immaculate - £1.7 million Not every intervention is divine. An American nun embarks on a new journey when she joins a remote convent in the Italian countryside. However, her warm welcome quickly turns into a living nightmare when she discovers her new home harbours a sinister secret and unspeakable horrors. Director: Michael Mohan Cast: Sydney Sweeney, Álvaro Morte, Simona Tabasco Release Date: 22nd March 2024 Distributor: Black Bear Certification: 18 Genre: Horror Rotten Tomatoes: 71% IMDb: 5.8 Top 15 Chart Run: 3-7-12 (3 weeks) Opening Weekend: £522,583 (#3) The other pregnant-Nun based horror to hit the screens in 2024, what helped 'Immaculate' win the battle was definitely the star, Sydney Sweeney. Coming off-the-back of 'Anyone But You', which made over £11.6 million and ended up as the 23rd hit of 2023 after only opening in 5th position, Sweeney was on top of the world and was always likely to see a boost for her next film. She put a lot into this film, both with her very-committed performance but also in production where she bought the rights to the script after it went into production hell after first auditing for the role in 2014.

72. Abigail - £1.7 million Children can be such monsters. A group of criminals kidnap a teenage ballet dancer, the daughter of a notorious gang leader, in order to obtain a ransom of $50 million, but over time, they discover that she is not just an ordinary girl. After the kidnappers begin to diminish, one by one, they discover, to their increasing horror, that they are locked inside with no normal little girl. Director: Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett Cast: Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton Release Date: 19th April 2024 Distributor: Universal Certification: 18 Genre: Horror Rotten Tomatoes: 83% IMDb: 6.6 Top 15 Chart Run: 5-6-12 (3 weeks) Opening Weekend: £596,590 (#5) The directing duo who go by the collective name 'Radio Silence' have really successfully carved out their own niche of OTT, high-concept horrors that balance the scares and comedy in equal measure ('Ready Or Not', the two most recent 'Screams') and that proved to be the case again with 'Abigail'. They poached Melissa Barrera for her first role since her controversial firing from the Scream franchise and paired her with another modern scream-queen in Kathryn Newton. This seemed to have the same problem as this year's 'Companion'; how do you get audiences to see the film without spoiling the big twist that makes the film unique? It turns out, they couldn't with a disappointing box-office return and an advertising campaign that focused fully on the twist.

73. Fly Me To The Moon - £1.7 million Will they make history… or fake it? Sparks fly in all directions as marketing maven Kelly Jones, brought in to fix NASA’s public image, wreaks havoc on Apollo 11 launch director Cole Davis’ already difficult task of putting a man on the moon. When the White House deems the mission too important to fail, Jones is directed to stage a fake moon landing as backup, and the countdown truly begins. Director: Greg Berlatini Cast: Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum, Woody Harrelson Release Date: 12th July 2024 Distributor: Sony Certification: 12A Genre: Rom-Com Rotten Tomatoes: 65% IMDb: 6.6 Top 15 Chart Run: 4-6-10-15 (4 weeks) Opening Weekend: £862,358 (#4) There's a time where you could just sell a film on the fact that you put two big stars together and hope that the chemistry alone would be enough to make proper bank. I'm sure that 10 years ago, this would have been huge but it feels like you need more to attract people to the cinemas nowadays. Apple reportedly put $100 million into this film and originally planned to make it an Apple TV+ exclusive. However, some good feedback in test screenings convinced them to go theatrical and Sony ended getting the distribution rights. I'm not sure where the buzz went because this seemed to come-and-go without any sort of impact. Despite being a rom-com, it has a weird Moon-conspiracy aspect to the plot which makes me interested to see it.
