An album track, but surely not for much longer, it's the centrepiece of her 'Short n' Sweet' tour and the song that I am so excited to see live in a few months. This is the wildest, horniest and just pure fun moment on 'Short n Sweet' with it's title being a reference to the teen-pregnancy classic of the same name starring Elliot Page. The guitar break on here is heavenly and was the moment in my first listen when I knew this was something special. I'm still holding out for a video release during the UK leg of the tour and for the performance to go viral and shoot this back up the charts. The winner will be revealed tomorrow but will it be Ariana Grande or Taylor Swift???

Reaching #1 in 20 countries, it kickstarted Sabrina's worldwide domination, spending 7 weeks at #1 in the UK. Baby numbers when compared to the 9 weeks that 'Taste' managed. The song of last summer, it's possibly one of the most summery songs ever made with it's breezy production and playful mood instantly transporting you to a beach. So it's no surprise that a beach is where the music video is set with Sabrina speedboating, stealing a credit card, sunbathing and dancing atop a surfboard before eventually being arrested, setting up the plot that continues in the 'Please Please Please' video. You've all heard this song, it was massive, it was everywhere and it's undeniably great. Sabrina knows what she's doing, there's plenty of lyrics that build ready-made to go viral ("I'm working late 'cause I'm a singer" and "that's that me espresso". At 4 weeks this was the equal longest running #1 in calendar year 2024. Nine Inch Nails frontman and Academy Award winning composer Trent Reznor named 'Espresso' as the best song of 2024 and who's going to argue with that. We are now left with either Sabrina Carpenter or Taylor Swift getting their first EOY #1 hit or Ariana Grande getting her 4th overall and first since 2018.

Rosalía) Completing the non-top 40 section of my top 10 is LISA's second solo single to reach such heights, 'New Woman' featuring Spanish singer Rosalía. There's an argument to be made that they don't mix together completely well on this track and, I'll admit, the transition between the chorus and Rosalía's verse is awkward (it's a shame because the visual transition is so clean) and it feels like a completely different song but I believe this to be intentional and found it it to work. They have great chemistry in the video and the transition back to Lisa is much smoother. One thing I've always said about BLACKPINK and why I love their music so much is that their outro's are always fiendishly good at ending on a high and wanting you to smash the repeat button and that's certainly the case here. The outro here is my favourite part of the song and I seriously think it might be my favourite thing Lisa has ever done. Her flow is so catchy on it. I'm so ready for the album now.

Madison is really an A-list star in my eyes and I'm just waiting for the rest of the world to catch up. It looked like this was going to be her breakthrough when it got off to a great start on Spotify and reached #50 in the Official Charts in the opening week. Alas, it didn't quite have enough to ever make the top 40 but still stuck around long enough to reach 10 weeks in the top 100 and hit ACR. I saw Madison twice last year on tour and this was the highlight on both occasions. That helped it get a second stint in my top 10 and the release of the 'Jennifer's Body'-inspired video helped it get a third. She sounds so good on these dancier tracks and it has earned her a well-deserved Grammy nod for 'Best Dance Pop Recording'.

There's just something about this that makes it so addictive to me. As soon as it ends, I'm ready to rewind back and listen to it again. That helped it achieve the joint-longest spell at #1 in calendar year 2024 at 4 weeks. It's quite a monotonous song with Rick Rubin and Jacob Bugden's production staying with a pretty consistent sound throughout, but it somehow works in it's advantage. I really can't put my finger on why this works so well for me but I've found it impossible to ignore. This re-entered my chart towards the end of the year after I was blessed enough to see Bea perform this live in Manchester. The concert was great and it really helped the album became one of my faves of last year. Letting 'Better Man' miss out at #101 is looking stupid now.

We had three major music biopics last year (not including 'Kneecap' because of the crazy reporting they did for it's 'opening weekend) and this ends up comparing fairly well. Poor old Robbie flopped with his 'Better Man' (£1,568,933, #5) which actually drops out of the top 10 after only three weeks but Bob Dylan proves a bigger draw, topping the chart with £2,616,302. This is pretty much in line with what Amy Winehouse's 'Back To Black' (£2,772,698, #1) did but Bob Marley proves to be the biggest of the bunch with 'One Love' opening to £6,950,773. This is not the first time Hollywood has tried to tell the story of Bob Dylan; most notably 2007's 'I'm Not There' (£58,491, #15) which experientially told stories 'based upon Dylan' where he was portrayed by a bunch of actors, including Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Richard Gere, Marcus Carl Franklin, Ben Whishaw and, most notably, bagging herself an Oscar-nom, Cate Blanchett. Directing this one is James Mangold, who is no stranger to the music biopic, directing 2006 Johnny Cash biopic 'Walk The Line' (£1,111,142, #2). See below for James Mangold's opening weekend history. The only other new entry in the top 10 is 'Wolf Man' (#7, £654,326). This is Leigh Whannell's second attempt at rebooting Universal's old monster franchises after his remake of 'The Invisible Man' (£2,163,797, #1, 2020) surprised many by being a huge critical and commercial success. I think expectations were high after the success of that film and this result will be a disappointment for Universal who seem to be betting heavy on Whannell making the monsters relevant to the next generation after the failure of their 'Dark Universe' with Tom Cruise's big-budget 'The Mummy' (£3,343,650, #1, 2017). 'Wolf Man' has received a pretty mixed critical reception so I can't see this one hanging around much, even with recent times being particularly strong for horror. Starring in this film are Christopher Abbott, as the titular monster and Julia Garner as his wife trying to survive the night. I've kind of buried the lede by discussing the new entries first as the biggest story this week is that 'Wicked' has officially passed 'Inside Out 2' to become the biggest film released in 2024. Dropping 39% on week 9, the film has reached £59,598,436 which is in-line with the final gross of 2023's 3rd biggest film 'Oppenheimer'. This puts it at #28 in the all-time list with the first and third 'Lord Of The Rings' films being the next to films it could overtake. I will create a thread for the full EOY chart in a couple of weeks when all of the 2024 films have ended their runs. Losing top spot is 'Mufasa: The Lion King' as it drops 26% in week 5. It's still holding well and with no obvious big kids competition coming soon, it should continue to rack up the grosses. It should overtake 'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice' next week but then it would need another £5 million to reach 'Gladiator II'. 'Sonic The Hedgehog' sticks at #3 with it's best hold yet (-28%). Last weeks biggest new entry 'Babydoll', shows decent legs by dropping 32% in week 2. 'A Real Pain' drops a larger 56% (a better 38% without previews) as it climbs up to a £1.8 million total. 'Maria' drops out of the top 10 (#12) but also passes the £1 million mark. 'Nosferatu' spends an impressive third weekend above £1 million. It's total is now in the double figures of millions which puts it above 'A Quiet Place: Day One'. This leaves 'Alien: Romulus' as the only horror film from last year to have out-grossed it. 'We Live In Time' does dip bellow the £1 million mark but still has a very solid third weekend, dropping 36%. It's almost at £7 million so may join 'Nosferatu' in the £10 million club by the end of it's run. 'Moana 2' has become the 5th 2024 release to pass the £40 million barrier. There is one further new entry in the #11-15 section: 'Sankranthiki Vasthunnam' (#14). Next week sees the openings of 'The Brutalist', 'Flight Risk', 'Presence', 'Sunray: Fallen Soldier', 'Sky Force' and 'Aida: Met Opera 2025'. This ended up being the bit hit from the album, despite being quite understated, especially when compared to the lead single. There is a lot going on in the production, it's full of synths and strings but they remain in the background and let Ari's vocals shine. It's not the full power and high notes we're used to from Ari's previous work but a more mature, restrained performance that sells the sense of despair in the lyrics. Ari shown why she is a soon-to-be Oscar nominated actress in the music video that very closely interpolates the concept of 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' with heart-breaking accuracy.

From my first listen, I already knew that this was their best ever song. This was the moment where Yuna became my favourite member of the group, she doesn't have a lot to do on the actual song but she kills in the video and now she is who comes to my mind when I think about this song. That's the sign of a star! This was cruelly overlooked for them, the production is so clean and the chorus is easily one of their strongest. Picking this 10th spot has been the hardest decision in the whole chart. I had 9 songs guaranteed for the top 10 but could have picked any of this '15 MINUTES', 'Not My Fault', 'the boy is mine' or 'APT.' for the final spot. In the end 'Taste' won out as it felt like it had earned it with it's three spells at #1 and it felt right to cap off Sabrina's perfect year. It was helped by a brilliantly fun music video that sees Sabrina and Jenna Ortega, very literally, going to war over a man with plenty of OTT recreations of violent Hollywood death scenes. But one fun music video does not a good song make and 'Taste' has a lot more going for it than just the video. It's the ultimate petty anthem with it's tongue-in-cheek lyrics made impossible not to go viral, especially with a cheeky-nod to the old Olivia Rodrigo situation "I know I've been known to share"). It's the whole package; catchy hook, memorable lyrics and a music video that fully matches, and even enhances, the concept.

She does have a song in the top 10 so it's not all bad news for her. This spend it's opening two weeks at #1 behind JADE's 'Angel Of My Dreams' before finally overtaking to become a #1 itself. This certainly build on the sound of 'Made You Mine' and even references back to it in the lyrics. I'm thinking that we're going to get a full album of this type of dance-y/indie-sh style of pop and I am fully here for it. The little instrumental break on here is godly and her vocals are some of her best. I had kinda forgotten how good this was, I think it's going straight back on my playlists now.

Taking on the role of Regina George after Rachel McAdams in huge shoes to fill, but I feel like Reneé did about as good as anyone could possibly do and was one of the best parts of the 2024 musical remake. Megan perfectly understood the assignment on this song too. Her verse keeps on message with the song and sprinkles in just enough witty bars and flow changes to match the playful vibe but avoid it from feeling like a cashgrab. I think most featured rappers would have just phoned it in and not put in any effort to their verse. I did end up listening to Reneé's' 'Snow Angel' album and really enjoyed it so expect her to do well in my chart when she comes back with new music.

However, the music video completely sold it to me and saw it bag Ariana her 27th #1 hit in my charts. Ariana as Catwoman, yes please! I think that late 90s/early 00s was the last great time period for R&B music and I think Ariana would have absolutely slayed in that time with her insane vocal ability so it was great to hear her embrace that era on this song. Getting Brandy & Monica on board for the remix was pretty iconic and helped it gain an official top 40 peak but it's the solo version that I love the most.

'Finesse' managed to breakout for me but there's nothing else of his discography I would ever go back to. I'd always associated Rosé with the slower, more ballad-y area of pop music (which the album sounds a lot more alligned with) but this was a punky, exciting slice of brash pop that didn't follow any of the recent trends. I think everyone was taken back by it's sound and I'm delighted that it has ended up leading to a proper, worldwide phenomenon. Leaving YG for their solo careers have been the best thing the girls have done. There's no way that YG would have let them release anything like this or give us a whole album like Rosé has and Lisa soon will. This has beat the #15 position of 'On The Ground' but I'm sure this would have been in my top 10 had it released earlier.

Not a bad result for a song that, on paper, sounds like a disaster. 2024 wasn't a great year for Canadian rappers, but bbno$ bucked the trend with a track with a potentially overbearing sample of Chic's 'Le Freak' and a YouTuber in the music video. I think we're all used to the modern trend of music fully relying on an old sample for nostalgia purposes while offering nothing new, well bbno$ has shown them how to do it right. Sabrina brought fun pop music back to the mainstream this year and it's a shame that bbno$ couldn't do the same for rap with this.

This is a collaboration with her friend, English multi-hyphenate Suki Waterhouse who Ashe credits as being the person who inspired her to get back into music and signwriting after her hiatus. I'm still not sure how this ended up being so huge in my chart because I didn't like Suki's voice on my first listen and I'm still not a massive fan of her verse. But the chorus has never left my head and when they sign in unison it actually songs great. The song just radiates such a positive vibe, despite the not-so-bright lyrics, that I can't help but bop along to it. We're in a run of three songs that have all done well to end up this high with Q4 releases and this one is still in my most recent chart.
