With those two teaming up, there was no chance of this ever missing my charts. However, I do feel like a lot of the changes to this compared to the original haven't been entirely successful and the original probably does work better as a song to listen to regularly. That is not Ariana's fault though as I adore her contribution. If we kept the original's chorus this would be much higher up and probably would have bagged another #1 hit for both artists in my chart.

I had no expectations for a Common album in 2024 but I heard some great buzz about this online so I thought I'd give it a spin and wow! Teaming up with legendary producer Pete Rock (of Pete Rock and CL Smooth fame who released one of the most definitive Hip-Hop songs ever in 'They Reminisce Over You') proved to be genius and I hope they now never stop working together. It's a crime that there's only three of theirs in this chart when the whole album deserves a spot in all honesty. 'Fortunate' is largely about Common telling us thigns that he is thankful for and at one point he raps 'I'm fortunate for Pete Rock' and you can hear why he'd say that. I love 90s Hip-Hop and this whole album feels like a lost album from that era thanks to his smooth and funky choice of samples to flip. If you take anything from this post, it should be to stop reading this and just go and play this album.

Cole delivers in abundance on his verses and any Dreamville rapper has an ace up their sleeve in the fact that they can feature the wonderful vocals of label-mate Ari Lennox on a hook. Gucci then rounds up the song with proper old-head rapper vibes with a thoughtful, considered, almost spoke-word outro that you would never usually expect from Gucci.

Eminem's lead singles always used to follow the same pattern ('My Name Is', 'The Real Slim Shady'. Without Me', 'Just Lose It', 'We Made You') and 'Houdini' sees the tradition return with a sort-of sequel to 2002's 'Without Me'. Interpolating 'Abracadara' by The Steve Miller Band, this plays all of the nostalgic hits you could ever want with Em even re-donning his Robin outfit to play sidekick to Dre's Batman again in the music video. There's cringy lines for sure but Em throws enough at the wall that he still finds the odd great punchline ("see the kid napping. Never did happen, Like Sherri Papini", "Would I really have a shot at a feat?") and the the first time I heard "fuck my own kids, they're brats" and saw him flip them off in the video was the funniest moment of any song in 2024. Before this released, I really thought like this was going to be the era were Eminem really begins to underperform but he made the right decision if going nostalgia overload as that is certainly what made this debut with the biggest opening sales of last year.

It's testament to this fact that I've booked to see her again this year on her Arena tour, despite the two tracks leading this album not performing anywhere near as well as 'greedy' and 'exes' did for me last year. 'Its ok I'm ok' feels like Tate trying to write another hit in the same style but it doesn't hit as hard. The staccato like delivery of 'it's ok i'm ok' is still very catchy though and is what has allowed this track to stick around, being robbed of re-entering the official top 40 today by Alexa's 2024 Christmas effort.

'Illusion' has a suitably catchy chorus and fulfils the vibe you expect for a summery dance track. It's a good song and that's why it's here but I think everyone was expecting something more revolutionary from Dua after how much her last album was so visionary and ended up defining the sound of early 2020s pop music. I have tickets to see Dua Lipa live in the summer and I'm hoping that show will end up fully winning me over on this album because it was being front-row! at her show in Liverpool that helped me fully appreciate the brilliance of 'Future Nostalgia'.

'Ruthless' is from the deluxe version of the album and was released as a digital bonus track on the original album but it wasn't until the release of 'Deeper into the Well' in August until I'd hear it. Lyrically, the song is about showing full loyalty to another, it's the musical form of the saying 'ride or die'. Kacey sounds great as always and the chorus is catchy, I don't know what else there is to say.

I think the production's pretty neat in general and Camila sounds good on the verses but I don't think it's anywhere near her strongest effort. It seems to be a song that evokes quite strong emotions in most but my thoughts are a bit less hyperbolic. Playboi Carti is featured too although he'd really ought not to be. :heart:

You need to deliver after that and this song brought together a bit of a holy trinity of grime MCs with Ghetts, Kano and Wretch 32 all going back-to-back without a chorus and giving us the best verses they've got. I think I have to give Kano the dub here. He starts off great with the Cam'ron bar and continues with some wild inflections that gives his verse so much personality. Before listening today, I would have said that Wretch had the weakest verse but it's really hitting this time around. I think you just expect it to be insane if you're heard all old Fire in the Boots because he's proved he has one of the best pens the UK have ever seen. I do like the symmentry in the verses where Ghetts and Wretch dedicate a lot of their verse to their mother while Kano talks about his grandmother. One thing I think we all know: the actual Mount Rushmore has four heads, I wonder who they think should join them? I'd say Avelino.

Although he isn't the best rapper from the UK, it is good to see Central Cee receive overseas recognition in a way that not many others have. Featuring on a Cole song is huge, especially when with this UK Drill beat that feels like it was made for Cench instead of Cole. I know some people hate the chorus but I think interpolating the 'Bed Intruder Song' is hilarious. Cole's verse is decent but the bar where he recites half of the alphabet might be the worst bar he's ever spit (I haven't listened to 'Grippy' so I can still say this truthfully). Fair play to Central Cee. I never would have guessed he would make it 5 years in a row with entries in my EOY top 100 but here we are with him doing it by outperforming J. Cole on his own song.

This was the song that was a late addition to my top 100 yesterday as I've continued listening to the album for the whole year and it deserved the extra entry above that Watsky track. 'don't wanna break up again' appears early on the album and gets you primed for her vocal style for this album. This isn't the Ariana of old where we we're getting whistle-notes galore but I think there's still been some evolution from 'positions' and some of the vocal cuts on here are still insane. I'm praying we get a tour for these two albums at some point but it's not looking likely.

Daniel Caesar & LaToiya Williams) On the whole, 'CHROMAKOPIA' ended up being an album I enjoyed as a full project instead of individual tracks standing out and that's reflected with this being one of only two entries for Tyler this year. On this track, Tyler spends the first three verses describing three individuals who he believes are hiding behind a mask (a middle-class rapper who pretenders to be a gangster, a closeted priest who acts homophobic and a stay-at-home Mum who wants independence) and who need to be true to themselves. If he ended it there, it could have came off as pretentious and judgemental. However, in the fourth verse he turns to mirror towards himself and spits an incredibly honest and biting takedown of himself that borders on being so personal that you feel uncomfortable listening to it ("Boy, you selfish as f*ck, that's really why you scared of being a parent"). It's the third verse directed to the Mother that really hits hardest for me, some of those lines are biting.

Proving that simplicity is sometimes best, this sounds like it was probably written in 5 minutes but it's just pure joy wrapped up in a song. Who new that Gambino would become the new heir to the throne of bubble-gum pop?

If you've heard the album you know it's split into two parts, the first half where Eminem battles with Slim Shady and his need to be controversial and the second half where Eminem has killed finally killed Slim and the focus turns to his own thoughts. One criticism you can make of this album is that Eminem portrays Slim Shady as being out-of-touch and embarrassing but it's also by far, the more interesting side of the album. If you can sit through the intentionally bad and cringy lines, you're rewarded with some of his best rapping with constantly changing flows. It's no coincidence that all four songs in this list and the album tracks that charted post-album release are all from the Slim Shady side of the album. What makes 'Evil' a standout is the chorus. It can be touch-and-go where it sounds ok when Eminem tries his talk-singing but it really works here as he embraces being the Evil half of 'Bad Meets Evil'.
