2023 Re-Cap 06. JISOO - FLOWER YudHcBIxlYw Does it hold up?: You may or may not know that JISOO is my favourite member of BLACKPINK (she's been my signature for years now) but she seems to be the member with the least ambitions to have a solo (music) career. My hype for this was so high last year that it probably helped it end a few places higher than it should. With Lisa, Rosé & Jennie all having released this year, my BLACKPINK itch has been well and truly covered without needing to go back to this too often.

At 48%, it's another slightly steep drop for the Disney sequel but when you had an opening weekend as good as 'Moana 2', you can have large drops and still be a massive hit. This is already Disney Animation's biggest non-Frozen hit which just goes to show how much they've relied on Pixar. 'Moana 2' is now up to 8th in the YTD charts, knocking 'It Ends With Us' out of the top 10. Almost retaking is 'Wicked' that has another brilliant hold (-35%) that allows it to overtake 'Dune: Part Two' to become the 4th biggest hit of the year. There's big competition coming in the next two weeks but if the singalong version does well when it releases on Boxing Day, there's still an outside shot that this can catch 'Inside Out 2' for that #1 spot. It's overtaken 'Les Miserables' in total gross but still has a long way to go to watch the UK's musical champions 'Beauty and the Beast' (£72.5 million) and 'Mamma Mia' (£69.5 million). But the big story this week is the bombs of the two biggest new releases. Opening the highest is 'Kraven The Hunter' (#5, £686,806). This is Sony's third effort of the year in their Spider-Man-less Spider-Man universe and is, by far, the softest landing of the three. An opening of £686,806 is making 'Madame Webb' look like Avatar with it's £2,273,544 (£1.3 million without previews) debut from February. If rumours are to be believed, this might be the last we ever see of SPUMC and if that proves the to the case, the 'Venom' films and memes are all they really have to show for it. Heavily tipped to be the next Bond, this is another disappointment on Aaron Taylor-Johnson's CV after 'Bullet Train', 'The Fall Guy', and 'The Kings Man'. But opening even more disappointingly is 'The Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim' (£483,584, #7). This is, of course, only a spin-off and an animated one at that but, with the original trilogy being the 26th, 27th and 32nd biggest films in the UK and the first 'Hobbit' being the 45th, it really feels like there should have been more of a market here for this. The 'Spider-Verse' has already showed that it's possible to get audiences to come out for an animated version of a beloved live-action series but this looks dead in the water. I know we've had some brilliant results for anime. especially 'The Boy and the Heron' last year, but it's still quite a niche market so maybe it was a bad idea for this film to adapt that style. One thing that has saved it compared to 'Kraven The Hunter' is the budget, this only costed $30 million, compared to $130 for Kraven. Warner Bros. must be slightly alarmed by how low this has opened and the negative reaction to the Amazon show with them going all in on the upcoming 'The Hunt For Gollum' There's one final new entry in the top 10, 'Queer' (#8, £293,041). This is director, Luca Guadagnino's 2nd film of the year after 'Challengers' (£1,607,094, #1) in April. This one is adapted from the 1985 novella of the same name and stars Daniel Craig as an American expat in 1950's Mexico who becomes infatuated with a younger man. Craig is a potential awards contender for the role but it looks like it has a bit of a limited appeal, opening so far behind 'Challengers'. Still holding at #3 and #4 respectfully are 'Gladiator II' and 'Paddington In Peru'. A 44% drop is nothing to be sniffed at for 'Gladiator II', especially with direct competition this week in 'Kraven The Hunter'. It still has a decent chance of catching the original 'Gladiator' to be Ridley Scott's biggest hit. 'Paddington In Peru' is showing some serious late legs, dropping 33%. However, it has now fallen off the place of original 'Paddington' so will definitely be ending as the lowest grossing film in the trilogy, barring something spectacular. The best hold of the week again goes to 'Conclave' (-29%). A sure-fire Oscar contender, if I was a cinema owner, I would definitely be finding a few more screens to show this. The film is already up to £4 million and there is still plenty of appetite for the film. What a year it's been for Black Bear with 'Longlegs' becoming their biggest release in the summer and this will be in 2nd place by next week. 'Red One' is now on Amazon Prime but is still able to hold in the top 10. However it has dropped 43% so might not be here for much longer. I think they've probably left another £1 million+ on the table with this early Prime release. 'Pushpa 2' does something that not many Indian films do and bags a 2nd week in the top 10, albeit with a drop in business of 81%. It has now overtaken 'Kalki 2989 AD' to be the biggest Indian release of 2024. There are two further new entries in the #11-15 section: 'Cinderella: Royal Opera House, London 2024' (#11) and 'Daft Punk & Leiji Matsumoto: Interstella 5555' (#15). We also see a re-release of 'Home Alone' (#12). Next week sees the openings of 'Mufasa: The Lion King', 'Vanvaas', 'Dolphin Boy', and 'Marco'. Can any of them top the charts?

2023 Re-Cap 07. J Hus - It's Crazy xnKbJwGjXAQ Does it hold up?: This is still an absolutely massive tune. Made all the better by how disappointing the rest of the album was. The most disrespected song of 2023; It's a crime that we let 'Who Told You' become a massive hit instead of this.

It’s because they’ve expanded the Nations League format so there’s still lots of teams playing in promotion/relegation play-offs in March and 8 teams have qualified for the finals which now take place in March and June instead of just being June.

2023 Re-Cap 09. Watsky feat. Hollis & Gifted Gab - AWW SHiT 1b4GKppd24o Does it hold up?: Starting off with a track that was originally released in January 2023 so we're almost 2 years out from it's release now. That will probably help explain somewhat why it's probably the song I've gone back to least from last year's top 10. Listening now I'm still enjoying it; especially as it feels a little more 'serious' that he other songs which makes it a real standout. I do think it's one I will look back on in the future as being an odd EOY top 10 finisher though.

Now we have a song that's even older than Rebecca Black's effort. Releasing in December 2022, this is now 2 years old but still sounds fresh to me. It does sound like a throwback to Watsky's old sound so it's retained a nice nostalgic edge that means it's the track of his I'm likeliest to go to when I'm in the mood to listen to Watsky.

This means that the winner for a second week is 'Moana 2'. Dropping 43% in week 2, the film has now passed £21 million and, in turn, has already beat the total achieved by the original 'Moana' in 2016 which ended with just over £20 million. Although it's not all good news; despite opening bigger than 'Inside Out 2' last week, 'Moana 2' is now tracking behind where that was at the same stage (£23,250,882). It's up to #11 on the YTD chart so should comfortably be in the top 10 by next week. Holding well at #2 is 'Wicked'. I still haven't been able to catch it and was planning on doing so on Saturday but ended up having to give it a miss due to the storm. To be fair, I was expecting the storm to cause much larger drops all around than it has. Weirdly enough, Screen Daily claims 'Wicked' will soon overtake 'Dune: Part Two' to become the 3rd biggest film of the year, while UKBoxOffice on Box Office Theory claims it will be the 5th biggest film of the year. They're both wrong, it will be the 4th biggest release of the year. The biggest new entry this week and the first Indian release of the year to open with over £1 million is 'Pushpa 2: The Rule' (£1,118,894, #5). The original, 'Pushpa: The Rise: Part 1', debuted at #7 with £131,599 in 2021. Without previews, this film would have matched that position but with a (still) much healthier 3-day debut of £663k. It's breaking a lot of records with it's debut in India this weekend. Opening just behind at #6 is 'André Rieu’s 2024 Christmas Concert: Gold And Silver' (£931,024). This is down on last year's 'André Rieu's White Christmas' (£1,001,094, #5) but is well up on his Summer release from this year 'André Rieu's 2024 Maastricht Concert: Power of Love' (£629,652, #5). Underwhelming in it's debut at #9 is 'Nightbitch' (£133,977). Starring Amy Adams, this was originally being tipped as being a contender to finally give her an overdue Oscar but the film has gained so-so reviews and it's chances are looking slim. Adapted from a 2021 novel, it certainly has an eye-catching concept: An unnamed woman, struggling with motherhood, slowly starts to believe that she's turning into a dog. With Graham Norton promo a couple of weeks ago, this really should have opened better. The final new entry in the top 10 is 'Solo Leveling: ReAwakening' (£112,243, #10). This is a recap of the first season of the 'Solo Levelling' anime series with a sneak-peak of the first two episodes of the upcoming second season. A quick recap of the rest of the holdovers: 'Gladiator II' stays in 3rd place (-36%). It's now Ridley Scott's 2nd biggest ever release, only trailing the original 'Gladiator' (£31.3 million). 'Paddington In Peru' recovers slightly (-33%) after the big drop last week although it had now fallen off the pace of 'Paddington 2'. 'Conclave' has a brilliant hold (-27%, 12% without previews) as it's award push seems to be picking up loads of momentum. While entering December has seen 'Red One' has a nice boost (+7%) in business as Christmas nears. There is one further new entry in the #11-15 section: 'Laufey’s A Night At The Symphony: Hollywood Bowl' (#14). We also see a re-release of 'Gremlins' (#12). Next week sees the openings of 'The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim', 'Kraven The Hunter', 'Queer', 'Troubleshooters', 'The Universal Theory' and 'The Bibi Files'. 2023 Re-Cap 10. Rebecca Black - Sick To My Stomach oohYOjVy5vU Does it hold up?: Starting off with a track that was originally released in January 2023 so we're almost 2 years out from it's release now. That will probably help explain somewhat why it's probably the song I've gone back to least from last year's top 10. Listening now I'm still enjoying it; especially as it feels a little more 'serious' that he other songs which makes it a real standout. I do think it's one I will look back on in the future as being an odd EOY top 10 finisher though.
