Benny Blanco (the song’s producer, and the future Mr. Selena Gomez) shared some bts on the song in a podcast interview recently, as he was the main producer behind Kesha’s debut album and EP (surprise surprise Dr. Luke was credited in name only). Every track on Animal/Cannibal was exactly 120 BPM because he was that much of a novice he didn’t know you could change the BPM settings on the tech. The bridge consisting purely "DJ Turn It Up-Up-Up" repeated with more autotuned vocals every time was because of a deadline crunch. Kesha’s was touring and didn’t have time to record the actual bridge and the label needed a finished product by midnight to send to the CD press. So Benny took the very first line she sings in the song "DJ Turn It Up" and made that the bridge instead.

Stay Awake is lyrically preachy but I absolute adore its composition, one of the most interestingly composed number ones. It uses a "Am - G - C - F" chord progression which is mostly used to convey a sense of melancholy in music (the only other major hit I recall using this progression is Clocks by Coldplay) The intitial "Am" (a-minor) chord is typically used to create emotional distance, then going up a scale to major "G" and "C" chords creates a slight uplifting tension before finally resolves into a warm but sad sounding "F" major chord before looping again. That is such a unique composition and adding distorting dubstep beats over it is such a clever trick. Gotta give Nero their flowers for that one.

In retrospect, 2011 wasn’t really the death, it just marked the end of the golden era (aka the first Cheryl years). 2012 with Christopher Maloney in the final, Rylan being saved over both Carolyn Poole week 1 and the infamous deadlock of Ella Henderson and James Arthur put the final nail in the coffin of it not being seen as a legitimate music first talent contestant in the eyes of the GBP. Then just on a slope until 2015 being the show’s last relevant season imo, once the streaming era officially took over it was done. Back to 2011, honestly good season for talent. I would’ve gone for a complete revamp with the judges though and sacked Louis as well, replace him with the long rumoured Noel Gallagher or Ozzy Osbourne (familiarity to viewers of the show vis-à-vis Sharon) and swap UK & USA roles out for Rowland and Scherzinger (again loved Kelly but she was a one and done and viewers resonated with Nicole since she had already been a part of the show in capacity since 2007). So yeah a lineup Ozzy-Tulisa-Gary-Nicole.
