  4. Sam Hunt "Take Your Time"

    http://www.radioglobo.it/img/copertina/samhunt_takeyourtime.jpg

From day one, I’ve considered Sam Hunt to be the Sam Smith of country music. He was very well hyped around the industry early on, which seemed to fuel his breakthrough as much as the music itself. He gets a lot of love as well as a lot of hate. In Mr. Hunt’s case it’s because he’s quite deliberately defying the usual country stereotypes, from the pop sound in his music to the way he dresses. As much as I love to see someone going so against the grain, which is desperately needed at this point, I’m not entirely convinced of Sam’s authenticity either but would say the good outweighs the bad.

"Take Your Time" is part of the good, although I did get tired of it quickly. It stands out with Sam mostly talking in the verses and a chorus that’s simple but memorable and easy to relate to. The song’s crossover appeal was quite obvious and sure enough it became the biggest pop-country hit since "Cruise" two years earlier. Like Sam Smith’s best-known song "Stay With Me", I find this just a bit overrated for what it is, and I agree with those who think it almost doesn’t belong on country radio. But, along with his following single "House Party", it’s good enough for me to believe he may be worthy of all the attention he’s getting.

    Selena Gomez "Same Old Love"

    Same_Old_Love_by_Selena_Gomez.png

I’m generally not the type to ever like a song ironically, but exceptions can be made when the song in question is…well, is "song" even the right word in this case? Mess seems like the more appropriate term for "Same Old Love", Selena’s second Revival single which is equal parts laughably bad and objectively terrible. I was already put off by her previous two singles not being the pop stompers I like to hear from her, but after wishing for something else I learned instead to be careful what I wish for.

Without going into detail on everything that’s wrong here, it’s probably most ridiculous to watch the video and hear Charli XCX’s voice coming out of Selena’s mouth. It’s a clear sign that she’s not very capable of singing, but no matter who’s singing it, I can’t believe anyone thought it was worthy of recording, let alone single treatment. Said disbelief only multiplied when the US and Canada actually validated its existence, seemingly enjoying the song enough to buy it. It goes to show you that literally anything can be a hit, but just the thought of anyone taking it seriously does make me appreciate this bizarre, failed attempt at making a song. The :’) moment of the year, in my opinion.

    Shawn Mendes "Stitches"

    Shawn_Mendes_-_Stitches.png

"Stitches" is definitely one of my favorites from the past year, so I have to decide what to say about it now and what to save for commentary during my countdown. I guess I’ll say I was VERY surprised to ever be so in love with a Shawn Mendes song. I was already fairly impressed with "Life Of The Party" and "Something Big", enough to know he’s properly talented for his age and should be famous beyond the Internet, but for someone whose fans are also obsessed with the likes of Justin Bieber and Cody Simpson, I’d normally want nothing to do with him.

Prior to its single release, Shawn’s album Handwritten debuted at #1 in the US with no proper hit to his name, so basically just from his Internet fanbase. Of course his label was smart to use that as momentum to push a song onto radio, but I was not prepared for it to be a masterpiece. Even without the semi-established fanbase and the #1 album, "Stitches" certainly could have been a hit in its own right, and is becoming one now in the UK where his album wasn't #1 but his song could be next week! After hearing most of his album, I’m disappointed that Shawn didn’t bother choosing any more singles from it, instead going straight to a re-release. Nevertheless, I hope he is now a fully established artist because he has so many years ahead of him and could potentially get even better with age.

    Sheppard "Geronimo"

    Geronimo_Sheppard_altcover.png

In the video they look like a group of misfits, but Sheppard have so far proven to be the little band that could, with "Geronimo" being a theme song of sorts that was so big in Australia that it beat "Chandelier" as the highest Australian song in the year-end chart in 2014. This translated to success in other countries too, and I’m most surprised at how close they came to getting a hit in the UK and US, neither of which I thought they could manage. They looked more like flops in the UK, following months and months of pre-orders, several release date delays and mostly failed attempts and getting radio support, but a #53 peak stateside is something I’d call "not too shabby".

Every time I heard "Geronimo" on the radio I warmed more and more to it and quickly understood why Rich had been stanning so hard for it all along. It’s very anthemic by nature, nothing original by any means but executed flawlessly and playing to their strengths incredibly well. I haven’t liked any other songs of theirs that I’ve heard, unfortunately. They haven’t followed it up with much success, either, but the group comes across as such underdogs that I do hope Sheppard can pull off some more surprises in the future.

    Silento "Watch Me"

    Watch_Me_by_Silento.jpg

YOU ALREADY KNOW WHO IT IS!!!!! I will admit that’s a pretty obnoxious intro, especially when most of us had never heard of Silento before hearing this. But I’m a man of few complaints when it comes to "Watch Me", believe it or not. I probably would have been more dismissive eight or nine years ago if it was a hit alongside "This Is Why I’m Hot" and "Crank That", both of which I despised. This song has started a revival of sorts, with "Hit The Quan" following its lead and surely more to follow.

I was amazed at how "Watch Me" blew up without a proper music video, which wasn’t released until it was already top ten on the Hot 100. That said, I’m glad all those YouTube views didn’t send it to #1 only because I don’t like it THAT much and it seems like a likely one-hit wonder either way (not yet counting "Dessert"). Regardless of its merits or lack thereof, it’s simply impressive for a 16 or 17-year-old to combine a bunch of dances into a song that’s catchy enough to become a million-selling global phenomenon for a good chunk of the year. For those who aren’t impressed, I’m fairly sure Silento will make a few more attempts and then disappear soon enough.

  7. Adele's '25' Still No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart, Rachel Platten Bows in Top Five

    1/10/2016 by Keith Caulfield

Adele’s 25 becomes the first album by a woman to spend its first seven weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart since 1987 (and the first since Nielsen Music's electronically-scanned point-of-sale data began powering the chart in 1991), as the set rules the list for a seventh straight frame.

25 earned 194,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Jan. 7, according to Nielsen Music (down 47 percent). Of that sum, 164,000 were in pure album sales (down 47 percent as well).

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Jan. 23, 2016-dated chart (where 25 is No. 1 for a seventh week) will be posted in full to Billboard’s websites on Tuesday, Jan. 12.

The only other album by a woman to chart its first seven weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 was Whitney Houston’s second album, Whitney, which bowed atop the list dated June 17, 1987, and ruled for 11 straight frames (through the chart dated Sept. 5). Whitney was also the first album by a woman to debut at No. 1 (in an era when the chart was tabulated through ranked reports that retailers submitted to Billboard).

Among all albums, 25 is the first to score its first seven weeks at No. 1 since early 2002, when Creed’s Weathered claimed its first eight chart weeks at No. 1.

With 164,000 copies sold in its latest tracking week, 25’s total sales climb to 7.6 million in the U.S.

Justin Bieber’s Purpose stays steady at No. 2 on the new Billboard 200, with 124,000 units (down 43 percent) and 54,000 in pure album sales (down 47 percent).

Twenty One Pilots’ Blurryface is also a non-mover, as it holds at No. 3 with 52,000 units (down 35 percent) and 27,000 in pure album sales (down 42 percent).

The Weeknd’s Beauty Behind the Madness closes out the top four, as it climbs two spots to No. 4 with just over 45,000 units (down 43 percent).

Rachel Platten’s major label debut album, Wildfire, bows at No. 5 with with 45,000 units (of which 29,000 are in pure album sales). The set was released through Columbia Records on Jan. 1.

The singer/songwriter broke through in 2015 with the album’s lead single, “Fight Song.” It spent nine weeks at No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary songs chart, four weeks atop Adult Pop Songs and peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.

“Fight Song” closed 2015 as the No. 9 biggest-selling pop digital download song, with 2.48 million sold.

Wildfire’s latest single, “Stand By You,” became Platten’s second top 10 hit on the Adult Pop Songs chart in December.

Wildfire is the only new arrival in the top 10 -- and one of only three new-to-market albums to debut on the entire 200-position chart -- as so few albums were released on Jan. 1. The next-highest debut is Passion’s Salvation’s Tide is Rising at No. 19.

As for the rest of the top 10, One Direction’s Made in the A.M. slips 4-6 (44,000 units; down 41 percent), Chris Stapleton’s Traveller zips 12-7 (41,000 units; down 11 percent), Fetty Wap’s self-titled album dips 5-8 (36,000 units; down 33 percent) and Bryson Tiller’s Trapsoul hits a new peak, as it rises 10-9 (35,000 units; down 33 percent). Taylor Swift’s 1989 wraps up the top 10, descending one spot to No. 10 (32,000 units; down 40 percent).

Adele continues her reign at #1 for a seventh week, and it may be her last for the time being as reports have David Bowie currently in the lead for next week's chart. Wildfire is Rachel's third album, but the first two never charted on Billboard; her Fight Song EP debuted and peaked at #20 last year. Not much else of note except that Bryson Tiller's album reaches a new peak at #9!

Scroll down to the second post to see the year-end sales stats and 100 best-selling albums of 2015!

Posting this a little bit earlier than I did last year :P Curious to see if anyone has voted or will be voting for the Hottest 100 this year, it'd be great to see a decent amount of Buzzjackers involved! You can get yourself familiar or start voting here, it closes on January 22nd at 1 AM British time (or use the countdown on that page if you're in another time zone). Also, here are the results from last year's Hottest 100.

I've just seen an account is required to vote this year, or log in via Facebook/Twitter/Google+. Gonna get that sorted and start on this shortly! ^_^

Also, PLEASE no spoilers if anything leaks!

  13. That was such a great Now album, can't believe the low averages some posters had! Also, for What About Us to get that many 10s and not finish top 10 is extremely surprising!

Pleased with most of the top 10, not a fan of I Knew You Were Trouble and I agree with Jonjo that Everywhere is good but not THAT good, but otherwise great picks! Huge shame that Pitbull and The Lumineers aren't higher. Thanks as always Dobbo!

  14. Rachel Platten "Fight Song"

    Rachel Platten "Stand By You"

    Fight_Song_by_Rachel_Platten.pngRachel_Platten_-_Stand_by_You.png

If you had told me a year ago that Rachel Platten would ever have two songs in the US iTunes top ten, I would not have believed you. The only song of hers I knew was "1000 Ships" and I doubt that was anywhere near the top 100 let alone the top ten. While "Fight Song" is by no means an unlikely hit, Rachel herself was a very unlikely artist to have such a breakthrough year. Normally I'd be very excited about that, but I had the opposite reaction with her.

I've had a bit of a u-turn nowadays, but just being able to tolerate "Fight Song" on the radio was an uphill battle. The station introduced her as an "iHeartRadio On-The-Verge Artist" (which will mean nothing to most of you) which is airplay paid for "sponsored" by her label, and sure enough this station played it a lot, months before I heard it anywhere else. I wasn't enjoying it either so I cringed every time Rachel's words of empowerment were forced upon me and my family. I couldn't bear the thought of this being a proper hit, but fast-forward nine months later and I'm no longer irritated by it. It's a pretty cool UK #1 in my opinion, almost an anomaly for 2015 when it sounds better suited for the early 2000s.

I was encouraged when a fair few members claimed "Stand By You" is infinitely better than "Fight Song", but after listening I'd rate them as being equally sweet but unspectacular. Maybe I should listen to her older songs because I really think "1000 Ships" is better suited to her voice than either of these. That said, I don't begrudge Rachel's success at all and in fact I desperately want "Stand By You" to become a UK hit to save her from one-hit wonder status.

  15. Still love 'Cheerleader', it was on my potentials list for BJSC back in 2014 but then it blew up worldwide. Oops.

A lot of great stuff here!

    :arrr:

A Sandeborg potential, though, no wonder I love it. :o Thanks Adam!

Largely agree with your take on Meghan too - I'm intrigued to see how she fares both music-wise and commerically with her second era as my instincts tell me the success of her sound is down to being in the right place at the right time (appropriate Olly reference :magic:) and she's not in it for the long haul. Also never knew you were THAT big a Pitbull fan :o. I definitely admire how he 'owns' his ridiculousness, as you say, but he's too hit-and-miss for me to like on any non-ironic level I think :/. Would always be up for being won over though. :D
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's so true, and you could say the same about Meghan's partner in crime Charlie Puth. As for Pitbull, there was a time where I didn't respect him at all, so if I can be won over maybe you can too. B-)

(Thanks for the rest of your comment too )

The single cover for "Fun" is so Miami Vice it hurts.
Well it is Miami, and Pitbull  Certainly better than the Arial font on the "Time Of Our Lives" cover.

Mr Worldwide *.* he's had a much quieter 2015 for me but he always brings the tunes. I really enjoyed Time of Our Lives actually, a guilty pleasure :heehee:
"Back It Up" was all we needed from him tbh *.*

Some good tunes there, Cheerleader the huge highlight for me

Didn't like Jealous by Jonas but Chains & especially Levels were much superior.

Both She Knows & Time Of Our Lives I didn't really properly get into to but looking back they were fun tracks.

Yup, agree with most of this except I did like Jealous for a while. Thanks Dobbo!!

  16. Feed Your Head is always fascinating to listen to and such an earworm. Would have been a great top 5 BJSC hit but I think I was happy enough with its result.

Pleased to see Cool Kids do so well, a stellar song and hopefully Echosmith have more great tunes in the future
