01 | ** | Zara Larsson | Lush Life I was happy to see your #1, then immediately realized I've forgotten to chart it myself :( I'd checked the official chart to see if I missed anything which obviously didn't help in this case (facepalm). What a tune though!

  3. HARMONICA'S FAVORITE ENTRIES OF 2015

    1. Hushkanukia - Daniella Mason "Shade Of You"

    2. Desbuanda - Eves The Behavior "TV"

    3. Persephonia - A-WA "Habib Galbi"

    4. Patvia - Koven "Miracle"

    5. Yehesi - Yellow Claw feat. Ayden "Till It Hurts"

    6. Aeroche - Kove feat. Moko "Hurts"

    7. PRoJ - Everything Everything "Distant Past"

    8. Jayrusalem - Bonnie Anderson "Unbroken"

    9. Hushkanukia - PVRIS "St. Patrick"

    10. Jayrusalem - Adam Rickfors feat. Marylin "Heartbeats"

Surprise! Only four of these songs received our top points, as some of these were massive growers after the contest. But all ten have repeatedly slayed us in some shape or form, none more so than Daniella Mason as "Shade Of You" led me to the rest of her music which has perhaps been the best discovery I've made all year, both in- and outside BJSC. But all of these songs, I could not give enough praise to if I tried.

Songs 11-50 will be coming later! I'm not giving out any clues!

  4. Focus  . Finally, our first overall update in a while, but mostly old songs increasing as a result of AC stations switching back from Christmas music:

  5. Looks like 'Cheerleader' and 'Heartbeat Song' are the only two from that top 40 that didn't make the A-list, if my memory's correct. That's great for Kelly, not too different from 'Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)' which only made the B-list but seemed to be one of their most played songs back in 2012. Very pleased to see that!

I know it's not too surprising because it's Adele but I wouldn't have predicted 'Hello' so high as it's so recent. Other than that, I'm glad to see Charli XCX there as I wasn't sure how much support she'd get at this time last year, after 'Break The Rules' bombed.

  6. Ne-Yo feat. Juicy J "She Knows"

    Ne-YoSheKnows.jpg

Much like his cohorts Usher and Chris Brown, Ne-Yo has gone back to making urban music after all three of them converted to dance-pop in 2010. He did make some gems during that time but the pop landscape is changing, and realistically he would have diminishing returns chart-wise either way if Usher's and Chris's output was any indication. He hasn't made a complete departure to be fair, as "She Knows" was only the lead single in the US while "Coming With You" was chosen for the UK and he also had a Pitbull collab, both of which I'll get to later.

While not especially memorable it is an enjoyable return to classic Ne-Yo, with a couple of 2015 updates (obligatory saxophone and a useless feature from the monotonous Juicy J). It scraped the top 20 in the US and quite surprisingly reached #28 in the UK without much radio support, continuing Ne-Yo's streak of at least two top 40 hits on every album (in fact he had three this year if you count "Time Of Our Lives", but I don't). That really is impressive considering how much his star has diminished since 2006, and at least he managed to release an album, which is more than Usher can say lately. I'll have a LOT more praise for Ne-Yo later on in the thread.

    Nick Jonas "Chains"

    Nick Jonas "Levels"

    Nick_Jonas_-_Chains_(Official_Single_Cover).pngNick_Jonas_-_Levels_(Official_Single_Cover).png

Despite "Chains" being the first song released from Nick's self-titled album, I didn't hear it until it became the follow-up single to "Jealous", but I imagine I would have been hugely impressed either way. I love the minimalist approach to the verses and the production throughout is so perfectly-crafted. It fits very nicely with what's popular now but still stands out without sounding like anything in particular. If I remember correctly it didn't even get radio support or any attention whatsoever in the UK, which was disappointing and bizarre after "Jealous" was a #2 hit (and pathetic just like you Nick J haters!!!). Thankfully that wasn't the case in the US where it had plenty of airplay and reached #13.

That must not have been good enough for Nick or his label, so they gave up on pushing anything else from his album, which is a shame because "Teacher" deserved to have a chance. Luckily he had "Levels" ready to lead up to an album rerelease, which turned out to be the next best thing. It's certainly less dark, more upbeat and energetic, but that strategy didn't work either as it fell short of the top 40 in the UK and the US this time. Would it have fared better if Justin Bieber wasn't simultaneously making his comeback and leaving Nick completely in his shadow? It'll be interesting to see if that has a lasting effect, but if I had to choose between the two I'd much rather listen to Nick Jonas.

Nicki Minaj "The Night Is Still Young"

Nicki Minaj feat. Drake & Lil Wayne "Truffle Butter"

    The_Night_Is_Still_Young.jpghttp://cf-images.emusic.com/music/images/album/156/117/15611799/300x300.jpg

I was really counting on The Pinkprint to be another big album for Nicki, but had lost hope with all the delays and most of the singles barely catching on chartwise. She really proved me wrong in the end by scoring 5 top 40 hits in America, just one less than Pink Friday had! The songs weren't quite as good as she's capable of making, but these are two that I like.

My feelings toward "The Night Is Still Young" is similar to what I said about "Confident" earlier. It's a solid song, I can't fault anything specific about it, but I never had the patience to listen to it in full at the time. But now that I'm paying attention for the sake of writing this, I'm finally enjoying it. It's a standard Dr. Luke production for the most part and therefore probably would've sounded better with Ke$ha on it. There's not many songs you can say that about. Also, this was the only song on The Pinkprint to make the Radio 1 playlist, and even so it stalled on the C-list which didn't amount to anything.

Earlier in the year, Nicki really needed to redeem herself after two diabolical singles in a row, "Only" and "Hey Mama" (sorry Josh :kink:). She did just that with the bonus track "Truffle Butter", an unexpected single choice but a very refreshing one. It has her two trusted collaborators, Drake and Lil Wayne, who couldn't rescue "Only" from severe mediocrity but carry this one with the help of a much better beat in the background. The fact that it sounds good with no chorus, and therefore no real hook, makes it more impressive. So, now that the era's done, I think of The Pinkprint as a crisis averted. Since Nicki's capable of salvaging a campaign, maybe Rihanna can do the same this year.

  7. Adore Heartbeat Song & the 2 Meghan tracks

BUT JOHN LEGEND ISN'T THE CHART SAVIOUR ASJGGHOD :drama: :drama: :drama:

I may have only added that in to see the reaction :kink:

SLAY MAROON 5 :cheer: and Miguel :cheer:

However those two Meghen are the musical equivalent of hell :kink: :(

    Haha, thanks anyway Harry :P

Dear Future Husband   Gets way too much hate IMO :( I prefer it to Lips Are Movin for sure and it's not far behind All About That Bass. Like I'm Gonna Lose You was never an album highlight for me but it's nice and like you said, it's been good to see it climb the Hot 100 for so long, proving itself as a big hit!
I couldn't really remember how you ranked Meghan's singles so this is good to know! Thanks Joseph :D

    Hi Jordan

Maroon 5 were on top form this era, I'm not usually a big fan but they put together some really catchy hooks. Sugar was such a grower and I still love bopping to it now despite its overplay, it's so joyous and catchy that I can't not love it. This Summer is very catchy too even though it is a bit clunky, especially the title as you say. Shame it wasn't a big hit because it was different for them and it really worked imo.

That's exactly how I feel, it would've been great to see them smash with something so different. Sugar was more instant for me and hopefully it'll still sound as good over the next few years, it seems like a potential classic. Thanks as always for commenting :D

    QUEEN ARI :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:
    Her 3rd #1 on my chart! It's a record! :o

  10. Just so you know, I'm here for JoJo and only JoJo.

But Habib Galbi is a jam-and-five-quarters anthem of life death and rebirth please play this at my wedding and my funeral. And I agree with Black Magic, it doesn't stand out much at all so I was surprised when it finally held my interest after a month or two. Little Mix certainly could've come back with a worse song so I'm not at all bothered at how things have turned out for them.

  11. Peanut Butter Jelly is my favorite from that section, I hope Galantis has another hit coming!

    I shall predict:

    1. Kodaline – The One

    2. Sinead Harnett – She Ain’t Me

    3. Carly Rae Jepsen – Run Away with Me

    4. George Ezra – Cassy O’

    5. Tame Impala – Cause I’m A Man

    6. Florence and the Machine – Ship To Wreck

    7. Jess Glynne – Hold My Hand

    8. Lost Frequencies – Are You With Me?

    9. Ellie Goudling – Love Me Like You Do

    10. Circa Waves – T-Shirt Weather

  12. Finally, our annual J-Lo and Pitbull collaboration is at #91. Back It Up was a single for Prince Royce, and is the only song of his I've heard actually. It's a huge summer jam, with J-Lo adding a hint of Spanish to the song, particularly the earworm of "damelo papi chulo" which was stuck in my head for days. Jordan described it well when we were chatting last night - the hit that forgot to smash :(
Omg my actual impact. We could say the same about Only Human too :(

I'm also very glad Hozier has a second hit to his name, Someone New was definitely the right choice to follow TMTC. Oh look, Superherp *_

  13. Sorry this completely passed me by but I'm all caught up now. Terrific countdown, love most of the songs in the top 17 although I'd have preferred Wildest Dreams over Bad Blood for the #1. I'd forgotten about Lighthouse but it's stunning, just a shame about the circumstances and that they haven't released anything else since then. So glad I Really Like You lived up to its potential, and Love Me Like You as well, was overjoyed at its new official peak no matter how annoying #11 is!

Great write-up for Love Me Like You Do, an unbelievably good song and the way it builds as it goes along is incredible. Glad that Lips Are Movin' is Meghan's highest song here as it's by far my favorite of hers. I'm also so happy Wings became a proper hit for Birdy and hope that bodes well for her new single. And this thread would not be complete without the Flashlight video thumbnail *.*

Sooo many songs that will feature in my thread as well so I'll save the rest of my thoughts on them for later! Well done!!

  14. Really enjoying this, great format and your commentary captures each song wonderfully. I particularly love both Tove Lo songs featured, been unbelievably impressed with her artistry and talent. Also I prefer 'Love Myself' over 'Confident', Demi's song has great intent but just lacks something whereas Hailee's song sounds much more well-rounded. All the songs you match with each other are so spot on though, I love it--although the Tinashe/One Direction one was a bit of a curveball! :o Can't wait to see what you've saved for the top 10!
  15. Okay, just now taking a look at this. Surprised to see Thinking Out Loud at #2, I thought See You Again would have the runner-up slot on lock.

YES at The Hills ending up higher than Can't Feel My Face, I was afraid its peak might be too late in the tracking year for that to happen. Amazing that Adele got to #35 in just three chart weeks, for comparison's sake What Do You Mean is #33 and had eleven chart weeks counted.

I'm also surprised both Rihanna songs are so close together, wasn't expecting BBHMM in the top 50 and not sure I realized it had a longer chart run than FourFiveSeconds (23 weeks vs. 20 weeks)!

Also of note: back-to-back-to-back Meghan Trainor (74-75-76), nearly back-to-back-to-back The Weeknd (9-10-12), and nearly back-to-back-to-back UK #2 hits (38-40-41). I'll stop now :P

  16. James Bay making the Hot 100 :o Did something in particular boost it this week or is it just slowly growing into a (minor) hit anyway? Haven't been following it!
The latter! It's top 100 on iTunes now and has more momentum on airplay than Hold Back The River ever seemed to have. Not sure how high it can go just yet but he should easily stick around for a month or two at least.

  17. Finally posting mine at the last minute. Thanks to everyone who participated, I will pass these along!

  18. That's a great section, I wonder what songs you've saved for the top 20 now. Glad we feel the same about Stitches, I love it just as much as I did six months ago. Sorry is by far Justin's best for me and I fully agree with you with On My Mind too, especially the chorus. Indeed All Eyes On You won't be in my EOY but it is really nice! I haven't listened to Delilah yet, but probably should after seeing all the praise for it, I don't quite adore What Kind Of Man either but her other two singles this year are massive faves!
