Taylor Swift Claims Record Top 14 Spots on Billboard Hot 100, Led by ‘Fortnight’ With Post Malone
By Gary Trust | 04/29/2024
Taylor Swift achieves one of the most record-shattering weeks in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart – surpassing unprecedented heights that she previously set – as she claims the top 14 positions on the survey dated May 4. All 14 songs, led by “Fortnight,” featuring Post Malone, are from her new album, The Tortured Poets Department, which, following the Republic Records set’s April 19 release, blasts in at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Swift was already the only artist ever to dominate the Hot 100’s entire top 10 — thanks to tracks from her last album of all-new material, Midnights, in 2022, led by the collection’s “Anti-Hero.”
Among other new chart feats for Swift, “Fortnight” becomes her 12th Hot 100 No. 1, as she ties for the sixth-most leaders in the chart’s archives; she ups her career count of top 10s from 49 to 59, the most among women; and she charts 32 songs – all 31 from the deluxe version of The Tortured Poets Department plus established smash “Cruel Summer” – on the latest list overall, the most ever in a single week by a woman.
Below is a look at Swift’s latest groundbreaking week on the Hot 100.
Swift at Nos. 1 Through 14 on the Hot 100
Swift ranks at Nos. 1 through 14 on the Hot 100, rewriting the record week that she logged on the Nov. 5, 2022-dated chart when she became the first artist to boast the entire top 10 in a single week.
Here’s a recap of Swift’s songs in the top 14 spots on the May 4-dated Hot 100:
No. 1, “Fortnight,” feat. Post Malone
No. 2, “Down Bad”
No. 3, “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart”
No. 4, “The Tortured Poets Department”
No. 5, “So Long, London”
No. 6, “My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys”
No. 7, “But Daddy I Love Him”
No. 8, “Florida!!!,” feat. Florence + The Machine
No. 9, “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?”
No. 10, “Guilty as Sin?”
No. 11, “Fresh Out the Slammer”
No. 12, “loml”
No. 13, “The Alchemy”
No. 14, “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived”
‘Fortnight’ First-Week Streams, Airplay & Sales
“Fortnight,” which arrives as the 1,170th No. 1 in the Hot 100’s 65-year history, drew 76.2 million official streams and 31.1 million radio airplay audience impressions and sold 19,000 in the U.S. April 19-25.
The single soars in as Swift’s ninth leader on the Streaming Songs chart, the most among women (and second overall only to Drake’s 20), and her record-extending 29th No. 1 on Digital Song Sales. On the Radio Songs chart, it debuts at No. 14 (Swift’s second-highest entrance, after “Anti-Hero” started at No. 13).
The premiere of “Fortnight” with 76.2 million streams marks the top total for a song in a single week since YouTube song user-generated content was removed from chart calculations in 2020, surpassing the 76.1 million that Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License” drew in its first frame, as reflected on charts dated Jan. 23, 2021. (With 66.2 million official on-demand streams, “Fortnight” scores the biggest week by that metric since “Drivers License” drew 66.8 million that week.)
Swift’s 12th Hot 100 No. 1
With her 12th Hot 100 No. 1, Swift passes Whitney Houston and ties Madonna and The Supremes for the sixth-most leaders in the chart’s history. Among women, only Mariah Carey (19) and Rihanna (13) have more.
Most Billboard Hot 100 No. 1s:
20, The Beatles
19, Mariah Carey
14, Rihanna
13, Drake
13, Michael Jackson
12, Madonna
12, The Supremes
12, Taylor Swift
11, Whitney Houston
10, Janet Jackson
10, Stevie Wonder
Here’s a recap of Swift’s 12 Hot 100 No. 1s (with debuts atop the chart noted with *). “Fortnight” is her second leader billed with another artist, following “Bad Blood,” featuring Kendrick Lamar:
“Fortnight,” feat. Post Malone, one week at No. 1 to-date, May 4, 2024*
“Is It Over Now? (Taylor’s Version) [From the Vault],” one week, Nov. 11, 2023*
“Cruel Summer,” two weeks, beginning Oct. 28, 2023
“Anti-Hero,” eight weeks, beginning Nov. 5, 2022*
“All Too Well (Taylor’s Version),” one week, Nov. 27, 2021*
“Willow,” one week, Dec. 26, 2020*
“Cardigan,” one week, Aug. 8, 2020*
“Look What You Made Me Do,” three weeks, beginning Sept. 16, 2017
“Bad Blood,” feat. Kendrick Lamar, one week, June 6, 2015
“Blank Space,” seven weeks, beginning Nov. 29, 2014
“Shake It Off,” four weeks, beginning Sept. 6, 2014*
“We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” three weeks, beginning Sept. 1, 2012
Now with seven No. 1 Hot 100 debuts, Swift ties Ariana Grande for the most among women. Overall, only Drake has more (nine).
Plus, Swift pushes her total to seven Hot 100 No. 1s in the 2020s, tying Drake for the most this decade. BTS and Grande follow with six No. 1s each in the ‘20s.
Swift’s Record-Breaking Streak of Albums With Hot 100 No. 1s
As noted last October, when the revived “Cruel Summer” hit No. 1 on the Hot 100, four years after its release on her 2019 album Lover, Swift tied Rihanna for the most consecutive studio albums of all-new material – seven – each generating at least one Hot 100 No. 1.
Now, with the reign of “Fortnight,” Swift solely boasts a record eight consecutive albums of all-new music (excluding her rerecorded projects) each spinning off Hot 100 No. 1s. Here’s a recap:
The Tortured Poets Department: “Fortnight” (feat. Post Malone), 2024
Midnights: “Anti-Hero,” 2022
Evermore: “Willow,” 2020
Folklore: “Cardigan,” 2020
Lover: “Cruel Summer,” 2023 (originally released in 2019)
Reputation: “Look What You Made Me Do,” 2017
1989: “Shake It Off,” “Blank Space,” “Bad Blood” (feat. Kendrick Lamar), 2014-15
Red: “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” 2012
Department of title tracks: As it debuts at No. 4, “The Tortured Poets Department” becomes Swift’s highest-charting album title cut, and her first top five such entry, on the Hot 100. It passes four others of hers that have also hit the top 10: “Red” (No. 6 peak), “Speak Now” (No. 8), “Fearless” (No. 9) and “Lover” (No. 10).
Swift First Woman With 50-Plus Hot 100 Top 10s
Instantly adding 10 new Hot 100 top 10s, Swift becomes the first woman to surpass 50 career top 10s, boosting her total from 49 to 59.
Most Billboard Hot 100 Top 10s:
77, Drake
59, Taylor Swift
38, Madonna
35, The Beatles
32, Rihanna
30, Michael Jackson
29, Elton John
28, Mariah Carey
28, Stevie Wonder
27, Janet Jackson
26, Justin Bieber
25, Lil Wayne
25, Elvis Presley (whose career start predated the Hot 100’s inception)
Overall, Swift charts 32 songs – all 31 on the deluxe edition of The Tortured Poets Department plus “Cruel Summer” – on the latest Hot 100, the most in a single week by a woman. Only Morgan Wallen has sent more songs onto the chart in a frame: 36, on the March 18, 2023-dated chart, when his album One Thing at a Time roared in at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
As Wallen debuted 27 songs on the Hot 100 that week, Swift’s 31 debuts this week mark the most ever in a single week.
Swift’s Newest No. 1 as a Writer & Producer
Swift co-wrote “Fortnight” with Post Malone and Jack Antonoff, the latter of whom also produced it with Swift. Swift has now co-written 12 and co-produced six Hot 100 No. 1s.
Antonoff adds his sixth Hot 100 No. 1 as both a songwriter and producer. Post Malone notches his fifth leader as a writer.
Post Malone, Florence + The Machine’s New Hits
Just as Lana Del Rey contributed to Swift’s top 10 takeover on the Hot 100 dated Nov. 5, 2022, as featured on the No. 4 hit “Snow on the Beach,” Post Malone and Florence + The Machine join Swift in her second such achievement.
With “Fortnight,” Post Malone earns his fifth Hot 100 No. 1 – and first No. 1 debut – and his 12th top 10. Here’s a rundown of his leaders:
“Fortnight,” Taylor Swift feat. Post Malone, one week at No. 1 to-date, May 4, 2024
“Circles,” three weeks, beginning Nov. 30, 2019
“Sunflower (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse),” with Swae Lee, one week, Jan. 19, 2019
“Psycho,” feat. Ty Dolla $ign, one week, June 16, 2018
“Rockstar,” feat. 21 Savage, eight weeks, beginning Oct. 28, 2017
Meanwhile, Florence + The Machine reaches the Hot 100’s top 10 for the first time thanks to the act’s featured billing on “Florida!!!,” at No. 8. Frontwoman Florence Welch previously scored one top 10, as featured on Calvin Harris’ “Sweet Nothing,” which hit No. 10 in February 2013. Beyond Swift: Boone & More
Below Swift’s tracks at Nos. 1 through 14 on the Hot 100, Benson Boone charts the highest hit, as his No. 2-peaking “Beautiful Things” falls 3-15. (When Swift claimed the entire top 10 with tracks from Midnights, Sam Smith and Kim Petras’ “Unholy” halted her haul, ranking at No. 11, a week after it reached No. 1.)
Hozier’s “Too Sweet,” at No. 16, follows on the newest Hot 100, a week after it rose to No. 1. Future, Metro Boomin and Kendrick Lamar’s former three-week leader “Like That” is pushed down 2-17 and Teddy Swims’ former one-week No. 1 “Lose Control” backtracks 4-18, as it tops Radio Songs for a third week (69.5 million in audience, down 1%).

New #1! 'Fortnight' is the 8th song to be #1 in 2024, four more than there were at this point a year ago, the 8th #1 for Taylor Swift, and the 7th #1 for Post Malone - his first since 'Circles' almost 5 years ago. I'm just going to assume this is the most entries for one artist in NZ chart history, with 23 total. It's also certainly the freshest top 10 in NZ chart history, with the exception of the very first chart week of course.
On the album chart, it's Taylor's 14th #1, a streak that covers every studio release except her self-titled debut. Pearl Jam improves massively on the #40 peak of Give Way from last year, but not from the #2 peak of their release before that, Lightning Bolt in 2013. They've had six #1 albums in NZ, the first was Vs. in 1993 and the most recent was Backspacer in 2009.

Kreayshawn - Gucci Gucci
I loved this! IIRC Reggie Yates interviewed Kreayshawn on the chart show the day 'Gucci Gucci' was released, and they talked as if it was sure to be top 40 next week. It landed at #77 instead.
Dev - In The Dark
One of the best from the brief saxophone craze of 2011. #37 in the UK but #11 in the US!
Willow - 21st Century Girl
'Whip My Hair' didn't give this enough momentum to chart any higher than #91.
Joe Jonas - See No More
I wasn't a fan but recall it was expected to chart higher than #53.

Oh phew, I wasn't as confident as I'd have liked to be about qualifying, I wouldn't normally mind but since it's my anniversary I'm glad to be through! Surreal to be in the top 10 streaks atm, guessing my record is 8.
7 // Holland-Oats // Love Fame Tragedy - Don't You Want To Sleep With Someone Normal?
5 // Niceland // Galactus Jack - Words
3 // Herbilore // AYALA - Sorry For Nothing
2 // Conoria // Rainbow Kitten Surprise - Overtime (feat. Kacey Musgraves)
Semi 1 wasn't my favorite but I'm still sad to lose 4 from my votes, especially Holland-Oats! :( Hoping Semi 2 will be more to my tastes.

2018
Entries:
Joshua Micah "Who Says?" - 34th
Malory "Rapture" - DNQ
Marc E. Bassy feat. Kyle "Plot Twist" - DNQ
Ary "Already There" - DNQ
Dinovski feat. Caitlyn Scarlett "Island Of Sin" - DNQ
Ocean Park Standoff feat. Lil Yachty "If You Were Mine" - 33rd
The Aces "Put It On The Line" - 18th
For King & Country "Joy." - 4th
American Authors "Deep Water" - 28th
Holychild "Wishing You Away" - 13th
My Christian music phase carried into 2018, with the brilliant "Who Says?" giving me three consecutive entries from that genre. I'd come back to it later in the year with two more, including "Joy." which was finally, in my 5th year of participating, my first top 5! It was also a year of forgiveness, as I sent three artists who were responsible for two of my least favorite songs of the 2010s  (Kyle and Lil Yachty for "iSpy" and American Authors for "Best Day Of My Life"). The Aces were one of my favorite discoveries of the year, I listened to their album specifically hoping for a song with wide enough appeal for BJSC, and I think I chose the right one! I actually discovered them from a Zambian radio station, which I started listening to online earlier in the year. "Joy." and "Deep Water" were also discoveries from that station. And, I guess I can't avoid commenting on "Already There", one of my proudest entries to date, the first time I ever felt like a contender to win, only to not qualify at all. :snif: I still hope justice for it will be served one day.
Top 10 Faves:
1. FSR Rontvia - Freya Ridings "Lost Without You (Live)"
2. Aeroche - Camden Cox "Gold"
3. South Danaelanda - BUNT. feat. Leah Haywood "On My Way"
4. Niceland - Hooverphonic "Romantic"
5. Taahino - June Divided "Time Will Stop"
6. FARC - Alex Mills "Stayed Too Long"
7. Oslol - Gryffin & Zohara "Remember"
8. Vulkyria - Amy Miyu & Rochelle "All Good"
9. Tartford - Maria Nayler "Naked And Sacred"
10. Beaverdonia - Metric "Now Or Never Now"
Honorable Mentions:
Cadelicia - Simmy "Ngiyesaba"
FARC - Miriam Bryant "Black Car"
Utopia - Metric "Dressed To Suppress"
Taahino - Litany "Bedroom"
Desbuanda - Elley Duhé "Fly"
Desbuanda - Middle Kids "Mistake"
There's still something special about that live version of "Lost Without You" that isn't captured in the recorded version. Nevertheless, still amazing to see it become a chart hit! "Remember" is an absolute monster of a song. Elley Duhé was another top discovery in 2018, I've loved everything else I've heard from her too. And those back-to-back great entries by Metric, a proud moment for them to get their flowers in BJSC! (Still waiting for "Doomscroller" to get its turn too x)
2019
Entries:
Holy Ghost! "Dance A Little Closer" - 35th
G Flip "Killing My Time" - 26th
Avalanche City "Prayed For Love" - 37th
Sally "Calculated" - DNQ
Flight Facilities & Dustin Tebbutt "All Your Love" - DNQ
Benee "Want Me Back" - DNQ
Black Atlass "If They Only Knew" - DNQ
Joseph "Fighter" - DNQ
Sophie And The Giants "Space Girl" - DNQ
Voice Of The Beehive "Scary Kisses" - 20th
This was not a banner year, with only four qualifiers and my best result being 20th! I mostly had a New Zealand phase with four of my entries coming from there. I will take credit for sending Benee and Sophie And The Giants to BJSC before they were popular, I can't help that I'm ahead of the curve. -_- I didn't send a special artist for my 50th entry, which, based on the song I sent instead, you could say was poorly "Calculated". :kink: In addition, I thought Flight Facilities would do as well as all the RUFUS/RUFUS DU SOL entries (not even close), and Black Atlass would smash because he sounded like The Weekend (also nope). The year ended on a good note when I finally thought to send "Scary Kisses", a song I'd been obsessed with for several years. It was a relief to finally feel like I wasn't the only fan of my entry!
Top 10 Faves:
1. Vulkyria - Xenomania pts. Paige Cavell "Predators & Monsters"
2. Altyr Muunilinst - SOAK "Maybe"
3. Florina - Moyka "Colder"
4. Botanikka - Tamia "Stranger In My House (Thunderpuss Club Mix)"
5. Ojnoj - Ben Platt "RAIN"
6. Scherzland - Kah-lo "Exit Sign"
7. Trifoski - Marianas Trench Ft. Roger Joseph Manning Jr. "Echoes of You"
8. Thelonia - Openside "Character Flaws"
9. New Lexico - chloe mk "To Be Young"
10. Skall - Nadia Rose "Skwod"
Honorable Mentions:
Kluminican Republic - KSHMR, B3nte and Badjack "The Spook Returns"
Republique d'Askorza - Mutya Keisha Siobhan "Only You"
FSR Rontvia - Spinifex Gum with Marliya Choir "Sisters"
Persephonia - Baiuca feat. Aliboria "Olvídame"
Republique d'Askorza - Elley Duhé "Fever"
Moyka! As if I didn't already love too many Norwegian acts, she was instantly my new fave. Meanwhile Elley, although not Norwegian, climbed further in my affections with "Fever", and the MKS entries continued to impress because of course they did. I'm happy with how diverse my list of faves was in 2019!

Hi Cow P!Hi!1. Dua Lipa – Training Season [18-1] -> This is so much of Future Nostalgia and I love it.
2. Beyonce – Texas Hold ‘Em [10-2] -> pretty a decent country vibe from the queen!
7. Djo – End Of Beginning -> One of the better TikTok tune for sure.
8. Nate Smith – World On Fire [21-18-8-1-8] -> Will check this one after I charted him on his dance collaboration.
10. Calvin Harris & Rag'n'Bone Man – Lovers In A Past Life -> A decent follow-up from Calvin & Rag, but still nowhere near his quality standard.
24. Becky Hill & Sonny Fodera – Never Be Alone -> A massive bop for this one and also giving Becky her first top 10 on my personal!
26. Noah Kahan – Stick Season [36-14-4-2-12-26] -> Good to see this getting another month in the chart.
1. Ha, I was looking forward to a different sound from her but clearly this is still good!
2. I've listened to the album now, not sure yet if I'll chart any other tracks
7. Hoping it'll climb next month!
8. Dance collab? Can't remember if I noticed that :o
10. Honestly it's still growing on me, I'm liking it as much as 'Giant' now!
24. Yay Becky!
26. Yeah, one of the rare few to get a six-month chart run. A few have had seven but I don't see this one doing so.
Thanks for commenting :D
Hi John!Hi Jordan! :)1. Dua Lipa – Training Season [18-1] cheer.gif This is another great single from Dua, good choice of number one
7. Djo – End Of Beginning good to see this enter, who knew Stranger Things would give birth to a popstar?! :cheer:
15. Good Neighbours – Home [20-15]
16. Dua Lipa – Houdini [2-1-1-7-16] 2 chart-toppers in a row here, proper fan
24. Becky Hill & Sonny Fodera – Never Be Alone this is a great dancepop track, should have been (a bit) bigger :yahoo:
30. Dasha – Austin just getting into this one, catchy!
33. SZA – Saturn love the melody on this, and anything that is remotely sci-fi is fine with me - OK you can't live on Saturn, but the imagery is lovely :)
39. Sadie Jean – Locksmith [11-39] :cheer: why isn't this a hit? It's as good as any current heart-on-sleeve balladeer :o
Hope all is fab! Great chart, loads to love in here!
1. Thanks, I still prefer 'Houdini' but this is great too!
7. Not me, not that I have any clue what Stranger Things is :P
24. Yeah, deserved top 20 in the UK at least.
33. I think it's one of her best, better than some of her bigger hits!
39. Well, it's a year and a half old by now, not that it's stopped other old songs  I just feel fortunate to have discovered it at all <3
Thanks for commenting :D

2016
Entries:
Doop "Tequila" - DNQ
Lipstick Gypsy "The Cure" - DNQ
Sizzy Rocket "Need Somebody" - DNQ
Sleigh Bells "A/B Machines" - 29th
Megan McCauley "Die For You" - DNQ
Meg Mac "Never Be" - 8th
Parri$ "Nasty" - 37th
Joseph "White Flag" - 18th
Lauren Alaina "Road Less Traveled" - 9th
You'll notice there's only 9 entries on this list, that's because I forgot to enter BJSC 86! Coincidentally, I also forgot to remind Noahspike to confirm so our sister country Desbuanda didn't participate either. This was also the same contest as Blush-gate, which delayed the semifinals by at least a day, but we weren't invited to confirm late and tbh I may not have asked, it was just too busy of a month. Instead we had our own Desbuonica contest with each of our faves and a few new entries - "Turn And Turn Again" being the rightful winner. It also worked out because I went from mostly DNQing to finally my first ever top 10...with another one just three months later! "Road Less Traveled" was notable for getting five 18s in the first 10 votes and leading by 49 at one point. "A/B Machines" was especially iconic, "Tequila" was a major bust, and "Need Somebody" was the most unjust DNQ.
Top 10 Faves:
1. Tinnmark - Carl Louis feat. Ary "Telescope"
2. Beaverdonia - Bang La Decks "Aide"
3. FARC - MUNA "Winterbreak"
4. Unovia - Ali Barter "Far Away"
5. Seyetana - Arion feat. Elize Ryd "At The Break Of Dawn"
6. FARC - Jones "Hoops"
7. N DNTN - Nadia Tehran "Cash Flow"
8. Mulgracia - Cobi "Don't You Cry For Me"
9. Altyr Muunilinst - Willa "Hey"
10. FSR Rontvia - KOLAJ "The Touch"
Honorable Mentions:
Ultraviolenceland - Lauren Aquilina "How Would You Like It?"
Cadelicia - Mendoza "Love Druggie (Jade Blue Remix)"
St. Burbia - Jorja Smith "Blue Lights"
Republic Of Adonia - Anna Of The North "The Dreamer"
The Actual Republic Of Bellamia - Catey Shaw "The Ransom (Tommy Walker Remix)"
Daehun - I.O.I. "Very Very Very"
Desbuanda - Sofi Tukker "Matadora"
Summericia - Genevieve "Show Your Colors (PLS&TY Remix)"
The Carl Louis feat. Ary entry is what led me to have Ary represent Harmonica not once, but twice! We love our Norwegian females, in fact "The Dreamer" was a Harmonica potential but Math beat me to it. Genevieve was a big fave and it was a shame she barely released any music. The Jones entry was somehow even better than the first, so underrated, and obviously Muna and Jorja Smith had a bright future ahead of them!
2017
Entries:
Tall Heights "Spirit Cold" - 29th
Kaneholler "Paper Games" - 21st
Ary "Higher" - 33rd
Northeast Party House "For You" - DNQ
Jillian Jacqueline "Reasons" - DNQ
Moment "All This Time" - DNQ
Kari Kimmel "Can You Feel It" - DNQ
Blondage "Dive" - 42nd
Hollyn "Alone" - 13th
Daniella Mason "Cover The Earth" - DNQ
I ended up with a 7-contest Q streak, which I think is still my record! Also my 3rd year in a row with exactly 5 entries that qualified. A couple of these were pleasant surprises, especially "Spirit Cold" (a folk ballad!) and "Paper Games" which was my first time finishing 2nd in a semifinal! Three of these are artists I discovered from BJSC: Ary, Moment, and Daniella Mason. The latter was picked specifically for BJSC 100 as she's still my favorite artist discovery, I didn't mind at all that it didn't do that well. "All This Time" became my most unjust DNQ to date, but it'll be dethroned the following year.
Top 10 Faves:
1. Kluminican Republic - RUFUS "Innerbloom"
2. South Danaelanda - Gareth Emery & Standerwick feat. Hailene "Saving Light"
3. Ultraviolenceland - Hannah Jane Lewis "Raincheck"
4. Ultraviolenceland - Jaded "In The Morning"
5. Oslol - Moment "Indigo"
6. Desbuanda - Paper Route "Chariots"
7. Medhelnia - Misterwives "Machine"
8. FARC - Robinson "Don't You Forget About Me"
9. Republique d'Ashton - Dragonette "Darth Vader"
10. Ojnoj - SAARA "Superpowers"
Honorable Mentions:
St. Burbia - Alice Merton "No Roots"
Tinnmark - Emilie Nicolas "Sky"
Republique d'Ashton - Mutya Keisha Siobhan "I'm Alright"
Desbuanda - DJDS feat. Amber Mark & Marco McKinnis "Trees On Fire"
Medhelnia - Clare Maguire "Elizabeth Taylor (Mulholland Edition)"
Trifoski - Drones Club "Hurricane"
Moment and Robinson were my favorite artist discoveries of 2017, perhaps unsurprisingly as I've sent songs from both of them. Emilie Nicolas I already loved from Unknown Pleasures, but loved her even more after this entry. "No Roots" crossing over to almost be a proper hit was amazing to see! "Superpowers" was quite the conversation topic for both Harmonica and Desbuanda - Noahspike and I both loved it! Wonder if Misterwives' appearance here will foreshadow anything.

Taylor Swift Makes Historic Debut at No. 1 on Billboard 200 With ‘The Tortured Poets Department’
By Keith Caulfield | 04/28/2024
As expected, Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department makes a gigantic debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart (dated May 4), securing the superstar her 14th chart-topping album. She ties Jay-Z for the most No. 1s among soloists in the nearly-70-year history of the chart. Only The Beatles, with 19 No. 1s, have more.
The Tortured Poets Department launches with 2.61 million equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending April 25, with traditional album sales (purchases of digital download albums, CDs, vinyl LPs and cassettes) comprising 1.914 million of that sum. Of that sales figure, vinyl sales represent a staggering 859,000. The collected 31 songs on the deluxe edition of the album generated 891.34 million on-demand official streams.
Those eye-popping figures mark the largest streaming week for an album ever, the second-largest week for an album (by total equivalent album units earned) since the Billboard 200 began measuring by units in December 2014, the third-largest sales week (by traditional album sales) in the modern era (since Luminate began electronically tracking sales in 1991) and the largest sales week for an album on vinyl in the modern era.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album.
Of The Tortured Poets Department’s first-week unit sum of 2.61 million, album sales comprise 1.914 million (a number bolstered by its availability across more than 20 different iterations of the album), SEA units comprise 683,000 (equaling 891.37 million on-demand official streams of the set’s 31 songs, on its deluxe edition) and TEA units comprise 14,000. (All figures are rounded.)
With 1.914 million sold, The Tortured Poets Department is instantly the top-selling album of 2024, year-to-date. The second-biggest selling album, counting weekly sales from January through the present, is Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter, with 228,000 copies sold in total.
Swift announced the album during the Grammy Awards on Feb. 4, and her official webstore began accepting pre-orders for the project that same day. The set was released on April 19, alongside its first single, “Fortnight,” featuring Post Malone.
The Tortured Poets Department (abbreviated as TTPD) was initially released at midnight ET on April 19 as a standard 16-song digital download album, as well as an array of 17-song physical configurations (more details on the assorted versions later in this story). Two hours after the album’s release, Swift announced an expanded 31-song edition of the set and released it as a digital download and streaming album. She wrote: “It’s a 2am surprise: The Tortured Poets Department is a secret DOUBLE album. I’d written so much tortured poetry in the past 2 years and wanted to share it all with you, so here’s the second installment of TTPD: The Anthology. 15 extra songs. And now the story isn’t mine anymore… it’s all yours.”

Third-Largest Sales Week in Modern Era
The Tortured Poets Department sold 1.914 million copies in traditional album sales in its first week (purchases of digital downloads, CDs, vinyl LPs and cassette tapes). That marks the third-largest sales week for an album in the modern era — since Luminate began electronically tracking music sales in 1991.
The Tortured Poets Department’s sales were bolstered by its availability across 19 different physical configurations (nine CDs, six vinyl LPs and four cassettes, with four of the physical configurations exclusively sold by Target stores) and two digital download offerings (the standard 16-song album, and a surprise deluxe 31-song edition that was released two hours after the original album bowed). All of the variants are itemized later in this story.
Of The Tortured Poets Department’s first-week sales of 1.914 million, physical sales comprise 1.64 million (859,000 vinyl LPs — a modern-era single week record for an album on vinyl, 759,500 CDs and a little over 21,500 cassettes) and digital downloads comprise 274,000.
The Tortured Poets Department is the seventh Swift album to have sold at least 1 million copies in a single week, following the debuts of 1989 (Taylor’s Version), Midnights, reputation, the original 1989, Red and Speak Now. She is the only act with seven different albums to each sell at least 1 million copies in a single week in the modern era. In total, there have been 26 instances — by 24 different albums — in which an album has sold at least 1 million copies in a week in the modern era. One of those albums, Adele’s 25, sold more than 1 million in three separate weeks.
Six of the top 10 million-selling weeks occurred in the early 2000s, in the pre-digital and pre-streaming heyday of the CD — when essentially the only way to listen to music on-demand was by purchasing an album. The year 2000 was the high-water mark in the modern era for album sales, when 785 million albums were sold in the U.S. Comparably, in 2023, there were 105.32 million albums sold, and Swift sold the most of any act — accounting for 6% of all U.S. album sales in 2023. (Popular streaming services Spotify and Apple Music did not launch in the U.S. until 2011 and 2015, respectively.)
Here’s a recap of the top 10 biggest-selling weeks by albums in the modern era (1991-present), ranked in order by sales volume.

Further, in 2023, Swift accounted for 7% of all vinyl album sales in the U.S. From 2021 through 2023, vinyl albums were the leading configuration for album purchases in the U.S. Vinyl was the dominant configuration for album purchases in the U.S. up until the early 1980s. Pearl Jam’s ‘Dark Matter’ Debuts in Top Five on Billboard 200 Chart
By Keith Caulfield | 04/28/2024
Pearl Jam debuts at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 chart (dated May 4) with its latest studio album, Dark Matter, marking the 13th top 10-charting effort for the band. The set launches with a little over 59,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending April 25, according to Luminate.
Also in the top 10 of the new Billboard 200, as earlier reported, Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department makes a milestone debut atop the list, with 2.61 million equivalent album units earned in its first week.
Of Dark Matter’s first-week sum of 59,000 units, album sales comprise 52,000, SEA units comprise 7,000 (equaling 9.33 million on-demand official streams of the set’s 11 songs) and TEA units comprise a negligible sum. Notably, of its 52,000 sales sum, vinyl sales comprise a little over 24,000, enhanced by its availability across 12 different color vinyl variants.
The new album was led by the set’s title track, which hit No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart in March (the group’s fourth No. 1 and first since 1998) and has reached the top 10 on Alternative Airplay (the act’s 20th top 10 hit).
At No. 2 on the new Billboard 200, Future and Metro Boomin’s former leader We Don’t Trust You rises one spot with 69,000 equivalent album units earned (down 17%). Beyoncé’s chart-topping Cowboy Carter slips 2-3 with 66,000 (down 33%), and Morgan Wallen’s former No. 1 One Thing at a Time is a non-mover at No. 4 with 64,000 (down 11%).
Future and Metro Boomin’s We Still Don’t Trust You falls 1-6 with 54,000 equivalent album units earned (down 57%), Noah Kahan’s Stick Season slips 5-7 with 45,000 units (down 11%) and Benson Boone’s Fireworks & Rollerblades glides 7-8 with 40,000 units (down 8%). Rounding out the top 10 is a pair of former No. 1s: SZA’s SOS dips 8-9 with 39,000 units (down 2%) and Swift’s Lover climbs 11-10 with 37,000 (down 6%).
