Ariana Grande’s ‘Eternal Sunshine’ Spends Second Week at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart
By Keith Caulfield | 03/24/2024
Ariana Grande’s Eternal Sunshine spends a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart (dated March 30), after debuting atop the tally a week ago. The set earned 100,500 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the tracking week ending March 21 (down 56%), according to Luminate. It’s the third Grande album to have logged a personal-best two weeks at No. 1. Her last two full-length studio sets, Positions (in 2020) and Thank U, Next (2019), both spent their first two weeks at No. 1.
Eternal Sunshine debuted at No. 1 on the March 23-dated list with 227,000 units earned.
Plus, Kacey Musgraves’ Deeper Well starts at No. 2 with her biggest week ever by both equivalent album units and traditional album sales, while Justin Timberlake’s Everything I Thought It Was launches at No. 4.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album.
Of Eternal Sunshine’s 100,000 units earned in the tracking week ending March 21, SEA units comprise 87,000 (down 41%, equaling 115.05 million on-demand official streams of the set’s songs), album sales comprise 13,000 (down 56%) and TEA units comprise 500 (down 84%).
Kacey Musgraves’ Deeper Well makes a splash, as it debuts at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with 97,000 equivalent album units earned — her biggest week, by units, since the chart began ranking by that measurement in December 2014. Further, of the album’s first-week units, traditional album sales comprise 66,000 — Musgraves’ biggest sales week ever.
Of Deeper Well’s first-week unit sum of 97,000, traditional album sales comprise 66,000 (it’s the top-selling album of the week), SEA units comprise 30,000 (equaling 38.06 million on-demand official streams of the set’s songs) and TEA units comprise 1,000.
Deeper Well is Musgraves’ highest-charting album since her debut effort, Same Trailer Different Park, debuted and peaked at No. 2 in 2013.
Deeper Well is the fifth top 10-charting effort for Musgraves, and all of them have started in the top four of the ranking. She previously visited the region with Star-Crossed (No. 3, 2021), Golden Hour (No. 4, 2018), Pageant Material (No. 3, 2015) and Same Trailer Different Park (No. 2, 2013).
Deeper Well’s first-week unit sum surpasses Musgraves’ previous high, by units earned, when Star-Crossed debuted with 77,000 units. And, Deeper Well’s first-week sales figure is her best sales frame ever, beating the 55,000 that Pageant Material sold in its first week.
The new album was led by a pair of charting tracks on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart: the title track (reaching No. 26 in February) and “Too Good To Be True” (No. 41 earlier in March). Deeper is Musgraves’ first album since 2021, while in 2023 she scored her biggest chart hit ever on the Hot Country Songs and all-genre Billboard Hot 100 charts, when Zach Bryan’s “I Remember Everything,” on which she’s featured, topped both tallies. The song, her first leader on both lists, was released on Bryan’s self-titled 2023 album, but is not on Deeper.
Musgraves supported the album launch with appearances on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (March 14), NBC’s Today (March 15) and SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show (March 18). Prior to the album’s release on March 15, Musgraves was the musical guest on the March 2 episode of NBC’s Saturday Night Live.
Deeper Well’s first-week sales were supported by its availability across nine vinyl variants, including eight different-colored versions and exclusive editions for Amazon, Spotify and Target. In total, the album sold 37,000 copies on vinyl — the top-selling vinyl set of the week, Musgraves’ biggest sales week ever on vinyl, the largest vinyl week of 2024, and the fourth-largest week for a country album on vinyl since Luminate began tracking sales in 1991. (The only bigger sales weeks on vinyl for country sets were all registered by Taylor Swift’s re-recordings.)
Deeper Well was also issued in four different CD versions, three different digital editions (two were exclusive to her webstore — one with a bonus track, and another with the same bonus track an alternate cover art) and as a cassette tape.
Morgan Wallen’s chart-topping One Thing at a Time slips 2-3 on the new Billboard 200, pushed down with a 3% gain to 70,000 equivalent album units earned.
Justin Timberlake returns to the Billboard 200 with his first album in over six years, as Everything I Thought It Was starts at No. 4. The set opens with 67,000 equivalent album units earned and marks Timberlake’s sixth consecutive top five-charting effort — the entirety of his solo releases, which includes four No. 1s.
Of Everything’s first-week unit sum of 67,000, traditional album sales comprise 41,000, SEA units comprise 24,000 (equaling 31.13 million on-demand official streams of the set’s songs) and TEA units comprise 2,000.
The new album was led off by the single “Selfish,” which peaked at No. 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 dated Feb. 10. The track has also reached the top 20 of the Radio Songs, Pop Airplay, Adult Pop Airplay, Adult Contemporary and Rhythmic Airplay charts.
Everything’s release was ushered in by a much-buzzed-about one-off concert at The Wiltern in Los Angeles (March 13). The show featured a surprise reunion with his *NSYNC bandmates, with the group playing a medley of hits and the new Everything track “Paradise.” Timberlake also turned up on NPR’s Tiny Desk series on March 15 for a half-hour-long concert. Earlier in the week, on March 11, he performed the album’s “No Angels” on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!
Everything’s first-week sales were aided by its availability across four different vinyl variants (including exclusives for Amazon, Target and his webstore), four different deluxe CD boxed sets (each with a piece of branded clothing and a CD) and a standard CD.
Noah Kahan’s Stick Season falls 3-5 on the new Billboard 200 with 46,000 equivalent album units earned (down 5%). Five former No. 1s round out the rest of the top 10, as SZA’s SOS dips 5-6 (43,000; down 4%), Swift’s Lover climbs 9-7 (41,000; up 6%), Bryan’s self-titled album falls 6-8 (40,000; down 2%), Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) descends 8-9 (nearly 40,000; up 3%) and Ye (formerly known as Kanye West) and Ty Dolla $ign’s Vultures 1 drops 4-10 (39,000; down 13%).

Teddy Swims’ ‘Lose Control’ Hits No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100
By Gary Trust | 03/25/2024
Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control” lifts to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart. The singer-songwriter reigns with his first career entry on the ranking.
Plus, making history, the song completes its ascent to the top of the Hot 100 in its 32nd week – wrapping the longest run to No. 1, by weeks on the chart, for a title by a solo male in the list’s 65-year archives.
Additionally in the Hot 100’s top 10, Cardi B’s “Enough (Miami)” debuts at No. 9, marking her 12th top 10.
Luminate, the independent data provider to the Billboard charts, completes a thorough review of all data submissions used in compiling the weekly chart rankings. Luminate reviews and authenticates data. In partnership with Billboard, data deemed suspicious or unverifiable is removed, using established criteria, before final chart calculations are made and published.
“Lose Control,” on SWIMS Int./Warner Records, becomes the 1,167th No. 1 in the Hot 100’s history. Here’s a look at its coronation, as well as the rest of the latest Hot 100’s top 10.
“Lose Control” drew 59.1 million radio airplay audience impressions (up 9%) and 23.2 million streams (down 2%) and sold 8,000 (down 34%) in the week ending March 21, according to Luminate.
The single rises 5-3 on the Radio Songs chart; holds at No. 4, after reaching No. 3, on Streaming Songs; and falls to No. 6 after three nonconsecutive weeks atop Digital Song Sales.
The song spends a second week at No. 1 on the Adult Pop Airplay chart. It rose to No. 2 on Adult Alternative Airplay in January and ascends to the top five (6-4) on Pop Airplay.
Two new versions of “Lose Control” arrived during the tracking week: a Tiësto remix (March 19) and a radio edit (March 21). They joined the previously available original version; a cappella, instrumental, piano and strings versions; slowed down and sped up mixes; a BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge Session recording; a live version recorded at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, with Freak Freely; and a goddard. remix.
Teddy Swims, real name Jaten Dimsdale, from Conyers, Ga., first appeared on Billboard’s charts in 2021, after he broke through with a viral cover of Michael Jackson’s “Rock With You” in mid-2019. (He signed to Warner Records on Christmas Eve 2019.) As a co-writer, he topped the Country Airplay chart via Thomas Rhett’s “Angels Don’t Always Have Wings” for a week in September 2023.
“I’m super grateful that person [broke my heart],” Teddy Swims recently told Billboard of the origin of “Lose Control.” “I think it’s so great to know that that pain is necessary because … pain is paying the bills still. I’m trying to stop putting myself in positions to get hurt, because you’ll always have to do that, but they say the best revenge is success.”
The song is from Teddy Swims’ debut full-length, I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part I). The set hit a No. 25 high on the March 16-dated Billboard 200 chart.
Of the LP’s title, he mused that therapy might “change the fabric of my being. It’s just, like, my little tics and my little anxiety that I have, my own ways – which is not a right way to go about it. But … I’m comfortable in my existence.”
“Lose Control” completes the longest climb to No. 1, by weeks on the chart, for a title by a solo male ever on the Hot 100. Overall, it finishes the fifth-steadiest rise to the summit.
Most chart weeks to No. 1 on the Hot 100:
59, “Heat Waves,” Glass Animals, reached No. 1 on the chart dated March 12, 2022
54, “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” Brenda Lee, Dec. 9, 2023
35, “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” Mariah Carey, Dec. 21, 2019
33, “Macarena (Bayside Boys Mix),” Los Del Rio, Aug. 3, 1996
32, “Lose Control,” Teddy Swims, March 30, 2024
31, “Die for You,” The Weeknd & Ariana Grande, March 11, 2023
31, “Amazed,” Lonestar, March 4, 2000
30, “All of Me,” John Legend, May 17, 2014
Teddy Swims scores his first Hot 100 No. 1 as a writer, as well as a recording artist. He co-penned “Lose Control” with Julian Bunetta, Infamous and Mikky Ekko – all of whom also lead the list for the first time – and Josh Coleman, who previously topped the Hot 100 as a writer of Katy Perry’s “E.T.,” featuring Ye (then known as Kanye West), for five weeks in 2011, and Ke$ha’s “We R Who We R,” for a week in 2010.
“When it was finished, I was showing everybody before the song came out,” Teddy Swims told Billboard of “Lose Control” last year. “I just felt that energy, like, ‘This is lighting in a bottle.’ I knew this was going to change my life.”
As “Lose Control” leads the Hot 100, Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things” rises from No. 3 to a new No. 2 high.
With both songs on Warner Records, the label lands the Hot 100’s top two spots simultaneously for the first time since the chart dated April 6, 2013, when Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “Thrift Shop,” featuring Wanz (on Macklemore/ADA/Warner [then Warner Bros.]), tallied its fifth of six weeks at No. 1 and Baauer’s “Harlem Shake” (on Jeffree’s Mad Decent/Warner) placed at No. 2 following five weeks in charge. (Warner logged six weeks at Nos. 1 and 2 concurrently thanks to those songs, with “Harlem Shake” on top the prior five frames.)
“Lose Control” is the fourth song with the word “lose” in its title to emerge victorious on the Hot 100. The winners circle:
“Lose Control,” Teddy Swims, one week at No. 1 to date, March 30, 2024
“Lose You To Love Me,” Selena Gomez, one week, Nov. 9, 2019
“Lose Yourself,” Eminem, 12 weeks, beginning Nov. 9, 2002
“Don’t Wanna Lose You,” Gloria Estefan, one week, Sept. 16, 1989
Plus, three songs with “lost” in their titles have triumphed on the Hot 100: “Lost in Your Eyes,” by Debbie Gibson (1989), “Lost in Emotion,” by Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam (1987) and “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’,” by The Righteous Brothers (1965).
(In perhaps an upset, no songs with “win” or “won” have taken the Hot 100’s top prize.)
Also notable in the Hot 100’s top 10, Cardi B’s “Enough (Miami)” debuts at No. 9. Released March 15, the song starts with 14.5 million streams, 8.8 million in radio audience and 37,000 sold (as it opens as her seventh Digital Song Sales leader).
Cardi B notches her 12th Hot 100 top 10, and first on her own since “Up,” which became her fifth No. 1 in March 2021.
(305 in top 10: Miami appears in the title of a Hot 100 top 10 for a second time – Jan Hammer’s “Miami Vice Theme” sped to No. 1 for a week in 1985.)
Elsewhere in the Hot 100’s top 10, Ariana Grande’s “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” drops to No. 3 a week after it soared in as her ninth No. 1. Still, it tops Streaming Songs for a second week (26.3 million, down 19%) and claims the Hot 100’s top Airplay Gainer award (12.4 million, up 168%).
Jack Harlow’s “Lovin on Me” rebounds 5-4 on the Hot 100, following six nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 beginning last December, as it notches a 10th week atop the Radio Songs chart (73.9 million, down 2%). It adds a 15th week each atop the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts, which use the same multimetric methodology as the Hot 100.
“Carnival,” by Ye and Ty Dolla $ign and featuring Rich the Kid and Playboi Carti, falls 4-5 on the Hot 100 after a week at No. 1 two weeks earlier.
Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em” keeps at No. 6 after two weeks atop the Hot 100 earlier this month. It rules the multimetric Hot Country Songs chart for a sixth week.
Zach Bryan’s “I Remember Everything,” featuring Kacey Musgraves, advances 9-7 on the Hot 100, after it led for a week upon its debut last September. It tops the multimetric Hot Rock & Alternative Songs and Hot Rock Songs charts for a 30th week each.
Rounding out the Hot 100’s top 10, Tate McRae’s “Greedy” repeats at No. 8, after reaching No. 3, and Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer” rebounds 13-10, following four nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 beginning last October.

39 NE 01 Hannah Everingham - Siempre Tiene Flores
40 35 67 Drake And 21 Savage - Her Loss
A nearly static top 12 this week, with a few songs randomly rebounding below them. Ariana's album intro, only 1:32 in length, inexplicably climbs 10 spots as well to a new peak. 'FRI(END)S' appears to be the first solo chart appearance for V, and likewise of course with 'Austin' for Dasha.
Kiwi country artist Kaylee Bell has an impressive top 3 debut (and highest new entry honors) for her first charting album. Kacey Musgraves has just her second charting album in NZ, but easily beats the #30 peak of that one (Star-Crossed). And Justin Timberlake is almost an afterthought, missing the top 5 for the first time - except for the complete version of The 20/20 Experience, which charted separately from Part 1 & Part 2 and peaked at #22. Part 1 remains Justin's only #1 album in NZ.

10. Lainey Wilson "Watermelon Moonshine"
For those who don't know, Lainey is the biggest female success story in country music this decade. While her Southern drawl may be extra thick, she does have a nice voice and is currently pretty much guaranteed a hit with anything she releases, such is her star power right now. While I wasn't an immediate fan of hers (having back-to-back truck songs as singles certainly didn't help), 'Watermelon Moonshine' was the song that stopped me in my tracks and got me to listen. It's pretty much a modern day 'Strawberry Wine', and that's high praise! The ballad topped my monthly personal chart in October and sneaks into my EOY top 10.
9. Linkin Park "Lost"
Linkin Park's second album Meteora is my favorite album of all time. I'd only bought an anniversary edition of an album once before (although I appreciate the trend), but when the Meteora 20th anniversary edition was announced, I knew I had to have it – not least because my original copy is in terrible shape from how many times I've opened it and played the CD! 'Lost', as you probably know, was an unreleased track from the album, and needless to say, it became an instant fave. I'm so glad this was released, nice to hear Chester again on a "new" track!
8. Ayra Starr "Rush"
Definitely a record year for Afrobeats in my EOY! True to her name, Ayra Starr seems to have some star quality beyond just this song, so I hope we'll keep hearing more from her. I thought 'Rush' was so strong melodically that it could've worked in any genre, and I feel like it could've done well in the held-back era too, even before Afrobeats was as popular as it is now. I've replayed it loads, eventually moved on to remixes and found some great ones of those too!
7. Jazzy "Giving Me"
Believe me, if you knew my opinion of 'Make Me Feel Good', you'd know I wasn't rushing to hear any of Jazzy's solo output. But 'Giving Me' was a pleasant surprise, to say the least, when I first heard it on the chart show, and within a few weeks I was utterly obsessed. Much of Buzzjack dismissed the song by claiming it sounded like AI, which is the new lazy way of criticizing a song you don't like. My much more valid criticism is that the song ends too quickly and should be at least a minute longer. :basil:
Jazzy & Jess Glynne collab WHEN?6. Lil Durk feat. J. Cole "All My Life"
Hearing either of these artists on a Dr. Luke song was not on my bingo card! Actually, I was already a big fan of 'All My Life' before I knew who produced it, by which time it was too late to change my mind. I like the kid-sung chorus, reminiscent of Jay-Z's 'Hard Knock Life' and Nas' 'I Can', which were both childhood faves. J. Cole's verse is excellent, and it was nice to hear him on a more mainstream song again, as someone who prefers his earlier output over his recent stuff. Deserved a top 10 peak in the UK, but otherwise I'm happy with its chart performance.
Previous EOY history for Lil Durk: "Broadway Girls" (#21, 2012)

What's up Mango!
1 (2) Conan Gray - Lonely Dancers (5 wks / HCP 1) [24-5-2-2-1]
3 (7) Dua Lipa - Training Season (4 wks / HCP 3) [27-13-7-3]
4 (3) Benson Boone - Beautiful Things (6 wks / HCP 3) [30-14-7-5-3-4] A bit surreal to think of this as a UK #1 now! It's up to #3 in the US but not sure it'll get to #1.
7 (4) Rita Ora feat. Keith Urban - Shape Of Me (7 wks / HCP 1) [21-2-1-1-3-4-7]
9 (12) Beyoncé - Texas Hold 'Em (4 wks / HCP 9) [30-17-12-9] I actually wasn't expecting this in your top 10 based on your comment on my chart! I'd be curious how many top 10s Bey has had in your chart history, probably a lot?
10 (6) Zara Larsson - You Love Who You Love (8 wks / HCP 1) [22-4-1-2-3-4-6-10]
11 (8) Ella Henderson feat. Rudimental - Alibi (8 wks / HCP 4) [28-16-10-5-4-6-8-11]
12 (16) Alec Benjamin - Pick Me (4 wks / HCP 12) [33-21-16-12]
20 (23) Usher - Kissing Strangers (4 wks / HCP 20) [34-25-23-20]
21 (29) Olly Alexander - Dizzy (2 wks / HCP 21) [29-21]
22 (10) Justin Timberlake - Selfish (7 wks / HCP 7) [32-21-12-9-7-10-22]
23 (11) Becky Hill x Sonny Fodera - Never Be Alone (6 wks / HCP 10) [32-21-15-10-11-23] Every time I think Becky has run out of producers and DJs to collab with, a new one appears  But this is one of her better efforts of late!
27 (32) Calvin Harris feat. Rag'n'Bone Man - Lovers In A Past Life (3 wks / HCP 27) [37-32-27] Not quite as good as Giant, but it's growing on me (and you too by the looks of it)
36 (-) Djo - End Of Beginning (1 wk / HCP 36) [36]
37 (21) The Last Dinner Party - Nothing Matters (8 wks / HCP 8) [33-20-13-10-8-9-21-37]
38 (-) Charli XCX - Von Dutch (1 wk / HCP 38) [38] This is sounding like a banger! Hope it climbs for you!
40 (-) Kings Of Leon - Mustang (1 wk / HCP 40) [40]
Great chart :D

Hi John!Hi Jordan! :)1. Nate Smith – World On Fire [21-18-8-1] I don't really know much about Nate Smith, a sort of Country Imagine Dragons sound which is fine by me.
2. Cody Johnson – The Painter [34-21-2] ditto Cody Johnson, but this is more traditional Country ballad.
11. Sadie Jean – Locksmith :yahoo: pity it didn't do a bit better but it did OK
The top half of your chart is top notch, just a few I don;t know, the lower end there's more I don't know than do! Hope all is going great with you! Fab chart!
cheers! B-)
Nate is still pretty unknown even by me, and yet he's the first country artist with two #1s in my chart, so here we are  Great voice and songs though! Thanks for commenting and again for your Locksmith support :D
Hi Mango! Correct, it's an all-country top two this time :oSup Jordan!I don't know either of your top two I'm afraid, I'm presuming they're country?
3. Tate McRae – Exes [17-4-3] This is good but I got bored of it quite quickly. I think it was a bit overplayed on the radio over here!
4. The Last Dinner Party – Nothing Matters Ooh, this is an usually high new entry! What was the last song that entered this high up?!
5. Benson Boone – Beautiful Things [16-5]
6. Usher – Kissing Strangers This is a great return from him, and there are also a handful of the songs on the album which are as good as this.
7. Dua Lipa – Houdini [2-1-1-7]
8. Kygo & Ava Max – Whatever [22-8]
9. Ella Henderson feat. Rudimental – Alibi [18-9]
10. Beyonce – Texas Hold ‘Em Certainly not amongst her best ever but it is refreshing to hear her do something a bit different :)
12. Noah Kahan – Stick Season [36-14-4-2-12]
13. Teddy Swims – Lose Control [25-13]
14. Ariana Grande – Yes, And? [17-14]
15. Paul Russell – Lil Boo Thang [8-3-6-15]
18. Dua Lipa – Training Season I think this is almost as good as 'Houdini' and if they represent the sound of the album, I can't wait to hear it :D
20. Good Neighbours – Home There was a lot of love for this on Buzzjack but I just don't get the fuss about it. I see it has been added to R1 this week though so I wonder if will become a proper hit now?
21. Chayce Beckham – 23 Some long lost relative of David's?! :o
22. Jordan Davis – Tucson Too Late [26-22] Ooh, another one of your namesakes, I remember another one from last year too, which begs the question, how many different Jordans have made your chart?
23. Taylor Swift – Is It Over Now? [32-24-23]
25. Michael Marcagi – Scared To Start Pretty much the same comment as Good Neighbours
26. Zara Larsson & David Guetta – On My Love [5-1-6-12-26]
28. Tyla – Water [20-15-13-5-28]
30. Justin Timberlake – Selfish Good to see this here, I think it's a great song from him, even if it hasn't had quite the reception I was hoping for. Going to give the album a spin later, hoping for at least a few songs as good as this one.
32. Sabrina Carpenter – Feather [23-32]
35. Tate McRae – Greedy [38-8-4-5-9-35]
37. Jennifer Lopez – Can’t Get Enough
38. Jack Harlow – Lovin On Me [27-8-10-38]
39. Miley Cyrus – Used To Be Young [11-6-9-20-39]
Great chart this month I think :)
3. That surprises me, 'greedy' has been getting the overwhelming majority of airplay here and I figured that'd be the case everywhere. Either way I'd love to see a new single be pushed!
4. Just looking at my chart runs on this chart, it was 'Houdini' debuting at #2!
6. Ooh, I might have to listen to the album then, I've missed hearing poppier tracks from him such as this and would love to hear more.
11. Well, you know my taste, and it's too soon to say it's amongst her best, but I might!
18. Same on both counts! Expect a big climb on my next chart.
20. Personally I thought it'd already be much bigger by now, but perhaps it still has a chance. I originally thought it was incredibly anthemic and compared it to 'Little Talks' and others, but it hasn't held up that much for me.
21. I'm sure he'd like to think so  He won American Idol a couple years ago!
22. This is actually the same artist that I charted last year :P He's the only one that I can recall!
25. Aw, well, this one's growing on me a lot, AND he's from Ohio, so I have to stan :D
30. I think it's just okay, doesn't really push any musical boundaries like his previous albums did. Inoffensive enough but he's capable of better.
Thanks for commenting :D

Indeed!1st hit ever for Nonna :DBy Gary Trust | 03/18/2024
Ariana Grande’s grandmother – Nonna, formally Marjorie Grande – makes history on the Billboard Hot 100 (dated March 23), as “Ordinary Things” debuts at No. 55.
With the arrival of the song (from Grande’s album Eternal Sunshine, which launches at No. 1 on the Billboard 200), Nonna, 98, becomes the senior-most artist ever to have appeared on the Hot 100, dating to the chart’s Aug. 4, 1958, start.
Nonna, billed as a featured artist on “Ordinary Things,” claims the record from the late Fred Stobaugh, who was 96 when “Oh Sweet Lorraine,” billed as by Green Shoe Studio featuring Jacob Colgan (the song’s vocalist) and Stobaugh (its writer), spent a week on the Hot 100 dated Sept. 14, 2013, at No. 42.
Late legend Tony Bennett now ranks third among acts with the most life experience on the Hot 100. Bennett was 85 when “Body and Soul,” with Amy Winehouse, logged a week on the list, at No. 87, dated Oct. 1, 2011. Bennett passed the late George Burns, who was 84 when, aptly per the subject matter, “I Wish I Was Eighteen Again” wrapped its chart run the week of March 22, 1980.
“Ordinary Things” closes with a clip of Nonna imparting advice, as she reflects on her late husband, Frank. “Never go to bed without kissin’ goodnight,” Nonna – also credited as a co-writer of the song – shares. “That’s the worst thing to do; don’t ever, ever do that. And if you don’t feel comfortable doing it, you’re in the wrong place – get out.”
“I always record my Nonna, because you never know what she’s going to say,” Grande told Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe March 7. “I had this 30-minute voice note of her and her friend Shirley talking.”
Following the soundbite in the song, Grande laughs, closing the track, and Eternal Sunshine. She explained to Lowe of its inclusion, “I think it’s a little bit of, ‘Wow, our loved ones, our friends and our family have the ability to instantly just sort of soothe and calm and simplify things that are so complicated and heavy at times.’”
Grande’s grandmother has also been heard, although not credited with an artist billing, on “Daydreamin’,” from Grande’s 2013 debut album Yours Truly, and “Bloodline,” from 2019’s Thank U, Next. The latter song hit No. 22 on the Hot 100.
Eternal Sunshine, released on Republic Records, begins with 227,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in its first week (March 8-14), according to Luminate – the largest frame for any set so far in 2024.
“Ordinary Things” enters the Hot 100 with 8.8 million official streams in its first frame.
As previously reported, the new album’s “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” opens atop the Hot 100, marking Grande’s ninth No. 1. Lead single “Yes, And?” premiered at the summit in January.
Meanwhile, as Nonna makes her unprecedented entrance on the Hot 100, who is the youngest artist ever to reach the chart? While The Five Stairsteps, “a quintet of siblings, were joined by a sixth Stairstep, their 18-month-old brother Cubie, for several singles, beginning with ‘Something’s Missing’ in 1967,” Billboard reported in 1993, the youngest soloist remains Jordy, who was 5 years old when “Dur Dur D’être Bébé! (It’s Tough To Be a Baby)” first reached the survey, on its way to a No. 58 peak, dated June 19, 1993.
Ariana Grande wouldn’t remember Jordy’s debut. She made her own arrival when she was born one week later, on June 26, 1993.

This has always been my favorite album track on Foster The People's best-known album. As such, it's always seemed like an overlooked gem, a song that more people would surely appreciate if they heard it. Well, in anticipation of our 100th anniversary entry, which should be revealed in just a few short weeks, Harmonica is sending an almost-equally-special song for its 99th entry! (Also we seemed overdue for a male artist after sending females for the past 5 contests  )
