UK Chart Run: 2-1-1-1-2-2-8-12-26-45-57-56-51-54-60-64 (16 weeks)

I've never previously finished a round in less than a day but there really is little point dragging this round on any longer than is necessary so to absolutely no one's surprise it is chart legend Cliff Richard who leaves first. Sometime back then someone thought it would be a good idea to sing The Lord's Prayer to the tune of Auld Lang Syne because... why not? Released as a charity single ahead of the new millennium (although count me as someone who considers 2001 to be the start of it) it entered at #2 behind the surprise chart-topper King Of My Castle but went on to amass 3 weeks at #1 with huge sales.

It was seldom in doubt throughout the whole survivor but Cher is victorious for 1998. The California singer was already a chart veteran prior to Believe, first appearing way back in 1965 alongside Sonny on their #1 song I Got You Babe. Despite sporadic hits thereafter it wasn't until the start of the 90s where she achieved her second #1. Cue several more decent-sized hits (and another #1 in 1995) before the immortal Believe came along. The single, which helped bring the use of auto-tune to the mainstream, was an instant mega-smash and topped the UK chart for 7 consecutive weeks. It also gave Cher the record for oldest female to top the UK charts up until last year when this was broken by Kate Bush. It is the best-selling single of all time by a female solo artist.

A valiant effort by the underdogs but alas, second place it is. New York hip hop group Run-DMC's career began back in in 1983 but they'd enjoyed relatively modest chart success with just 2 top 20 singles before 1998. It's Like That was in fact released as their debut single however did not experience any commercial success. That was until 15 years later when underground Californian producer Jason Nevins gave it a house makeover which exploded in popularity. It vaulted straight to #1 in the UK, infamously denying the Spice Girls a 7th consecutive #1 single. Interestingly Run-DMC would only have one further hit after this which was a 2003 remix of their previous top 20 single It's Tricky. That same year, Nevins achieved his only other top 10 single.

Thanks for the patience with this year, been a busy month for moi! 1999 coming right up...

  5. Hey Mack, nice mix of picks there.

I'm With You is my fave Avril song and one of the best ballads from this era.

As big as an Oasis fan I am I've never really liked Lyla. So I was also someone who preferred Lonely at #1.

Who Am I is one of Will's best, at least post-Friday's Child (great album that btw).

  6. Alcaraz fave is very strange given he's never even reaches the semis before. Ruud would be a good shout given he made the final last year and his conqueror is not competing this year. Will probably just be another easy stroll for Novak though.
  7. Everton aren't losing their game so the worst they'll get is a draw meaning Leeds have no chance. Then it's up to Leicester who if they win (and Everton draw) have the superior GD so will stay up.

I think Everton win anyway so even Leicester winning won't save them but for what it's worth I don't think Leicester beat West Ham anyway.

So the 2 Ls to go down.

  9. I wonder if this will be the first season in PL history where 75% of the teams who made the top 4 last season didn't make it this season. Definitely been quite the shake-up. This is why I think Arsenal & Newcastle won't make it next season.
