The long contracts are to get around PSR so costs can be spread out over longer timeframes but it definitely attracts mercenaries, young players will look at it and be like "oh I can guarantee myself a £100K+ a week pay check until I'm 30 and I don't even had to put in any effort whatsoever" They're gambling on buying young players and selling them for much higher prices in a few years time. It's a business (no surprise considering who the owner is) and I'm not convinced they're winning anything meaningful anytime soon.
