All it would do is remind people how dead the charts actually are, just like One Dance a decade ago. Actually I don’t think it would even make a dent in the news. Shakira all the way, it’s so extremely rare we get a woman over 40 (nevermind almost 50) at #1

I can only imagine how big this could’ve been in Europe and (hopefully) the UK if it was promoted as the lead over Bring Your Love. That wasn’t a great representation of the album

The examples I can think of - Madonna and Kylie in the 00s - are more repeaks than actually surpassing the previous peaks, only because they were already so massive I suppose. I think Cher and Tina Turner are probably the best examples of artists who actually reached new heights after their initial success waned.

Pleaseee Shakira do SOMETHING!!

Sadly not surprised about Shania, this era’s just had no hype it feels like. There’s a Blood Records limited to 1k vinyl and it’s only sold 619 copies, I checked a few days ago and it was 300 and something! Supporting slots do nothing for bigger artists really, the people attending a Harry Styles concert would probably have zero interest in a new Shania Twain album and would just be happy to hear the few old songs they know I imagine. Same with Robyn. Promo is only good if it’s targeting the right audience.

The concept of Shakira having the #1 single and Shania having the #1 album this week Please God make it happen! Will take one or the other but preferably both if possible

The poor performance around the world suggests not. It did 10 million first day on Spotify, that puts it below Madonna’s ‘Confessions II’ and Doja Cat’s ‘Vie’ and just slightly above Miley’s ‘Something Beautiful’. It did do disproportionately well in the UK but I’d be surprised if it holds up.

Rooting for Shania! Charli doesn’t seem to have much hype this time around and her streaming is pretty poor

Not a Charli fan but, coming after Brat, this… doesn’t seem particularly good? Also she debuted with 10m worldwide, Madonna debuted with 13m just 3 weeks ago

Really curious about how this is going to do, the album was better than I expected but I feel there is zero hype this era. She’s only #4 on iTunes even

She didn’t release anything in this country in that time period I don’t know what vendetta you have against Shakira. Out of the 4 singles she had released before Hips Don’t Lie, only one missed the top 10. Jumping on a technicality that both of her #1s were collaborations doesn’t discredit her success in any way

Well I’m not sure what you mean but that’s just not true no matter how you put it lol Don’t Bother was a #9 hit before Hips Don’t Lie (albeit that didn’t take much in 2006), and she’s had plenty of chart entries since then

I agree with this. Personally, before streaming really took off and I was just downloading from iTunes, about 85-90% of what I listened to was less than a year old. I loved older music then too but I had less chance to explore and risk wasting money on something I don’t like. Since I got Spotify (in 2013) that’s gradually switched and now it’s the other way around, 2020s music makes up a very small fraction of my library. I’m probably an extreme case but I’d bet a lot of people are similar and that’s obviously being reflected in the charts. I like it, it’s more representative of what people are actually listening to not what record labels are currently pushing (as much).

If she really does re-release it next year I think she might be able to scrape gold eventually. It's very hard for artists who rely on physical sales to get certified in America now though

Yeah I'm so happy with how this is holding up! Tension went 1-8-36-83, so this is holding up better than that on week 3 and that had an actual hit single (2 if you count the title track).

That really explains a lot! I have wondered what they were thinking at some points this era, but ultimately seeing how the album has performed I think it makes sense. There probably isn't a smash hit single on the album, but overall it's a very strong body of work so it makes sense to push the album over any particular song. The spontaneity has probably connected with people more than a more traditional rollout would have, even though I do love a traditional rollout lol.
